Zachary stared at the salamander in his hand, still wary. He found it's colour-changing properties fascinating, and moved closer to the fire just to see it's colour change from pure white to a striking scarlet.
Glowing with pride from earning his house points, bringing Slytherin one step closer to defeating Hufflepuff, he was in a suddenly brilliant mood and let the Salamander skitter up his arm. "Can they live longer than six hours, Professor?" He asked loudly, wondering if they liked Pepper Imps as much as regular pepper. He always had plenty of those up in his dormitory.

Rhia grinnned, it seemed that at least one person was taking a genuine interest. 'A salamander lives only as long as the fire from which it sprang.' She began, thinking it through as she spoke. 'So technically you could keep a salamander alive forever, as long as you keep the fire going, bring it back to the flames every now and then and feed it pepper when outside the flames.. it would take quite a bit of work though, you wouldn't be able to just forget about it-' She gave a slight pause as if to think it through again. 'But it is definately possible.'

Zachary looked at the salamander curiously, thinking it over. He wasn't really the type to care for pets, and usually just let them linger around the manor or his dormitory, if his owl was any indication, but he was drawn to the lizard for some unknown reason.
It did sound like a lot of work, and he scowled at the salamander as if it was his fault. "You better like pepper imps." He said flatly, watching as it moved a bit closer to the fire and turned a bright orange.

Jerred leapt out of his seat and looked over Zachary's shoulder at the salamander.
'That thing is small.' He said, then began to move his hand towards it as if he was about to poke it.

Zachary pulled the salamander away, directing a scowl at Jerred. Holding it possessively, he looked at the Slytherin seriously. "Don't get too close to it now," he said, his eyes wide. "It burns those it doesn't like. I took a brave risk picking it up myself," he said gravely.
He glanced at the Professor, making sure his statement hadn't reached her ears.

Thom had been sulking in the background, put out by his murdering of the ashwinder. It was then that Daniels reaced forward into the fire, quite bravely (and uncharacteristically) and gently plucked a vibrantly coloured salamander from the hot flames. The Slytherin boy craddled it in his palms carefully.
The Hufflepuff smirked. 'Taken a shine to it, have you, Danials? And if it only burns those it doesn't like then I'd drop it if I were you.'

Zachary scowled at Thom, pulling the Salamander from the Hufflepuff's view. Then, he suddenly brightened.
"Someone wasn't paying attention to the lesson it seems," he said speaking loudly, hoping to gain the Professor's attention. "They don't actually burn you, they're completely safe. And obviously this one likes me, you prat." The last part of his remark was said in a bitter and indignant tone of voice.
He stared at Thom with narrowed eyes, before watching the salamander sniff around, crawling across the grass for more pepper. "I bet I could keep a Salamander alive longer than you could, Moen." He said challengingly to his seeker rival.

'Ha!' Thom barked nastily, placing his hands on his hips, pushing out his chest. 'You couldn't keep a conversation alive, you brainless twit.' he marched forward now, brushing past Daniels to look into the fire. A salamander of the same size as the Slytherins was perched on the edge of the fire, opening and closing its mouth lazily, lapping up the flames. Although Thom was smiling confidently, it was common knowledge that anything with intelligence did not usually trust Thom. His broom, wand and fish were proof of that.
Achingly he reached down, placing a finger on the lizard timidly. 'Ow!' he screeched loudly, rearing back and snatching his hand away, clutching it to his chest protectively. 'The ugly little beast!' he placed his finger in his mouth and began to suck it.

Rhiannon gave a loud laugh from the sideline, and went to pick up the "ugly beast" in question. 'Aw... too much testosterone even for these little guys...' She said amusedly, as she let the lizard crawl calmly up her arm and onto her shoulder. 'Though, if you two really want to see who can keep a salamander alive the longest... it could be made part of your Care of Magical Creatures project.' She suggested whilst eyeing them both with a slight grin.
Rhian had already planned that the class would do a practical element to the course, and she figured there was no time like the present to get started.

Jerred's hand shot straight into the air, but without waiting for the professor's acknowledgement, he spoke.
'Why don't they work together as a team?' Jerred suggested, waiting to see both students give him a scowl. 'Should teach them to play nicely with one another after school is finished.'

Thom looked at Jerred, genuinely horrified. 'No!' he protested loudly. 'That's the worst idea I've ever heard!' He narrowed his eyes so intensely at Jerred and Zachary that he could barely see.
'I'll look after the stupid lizard, but I'm working solo, mate. I'm not having some Slytherin shrimp telling me when its feeding time.'
He looked back at the fire again, seeing another of the salamanders, this one a little smaller than the others he had seen so far. It's tail was quite fat. 'I'll have that one. At least if I forget to feed it it'll be able to live off it's tail... what a fat arse...' he muttered the last part so that the professor did not hear.

Rhiannon stifled a laugh and mustered the most serious face she could manage. 'No, No, I think Jerred is on to something here.' The sides of her mouth twitched as she saw their somewhat horrified reaction. She wasn't normally the sort of person to be purposely difficult, but this one was far too good to miss out on. 'Yeah I think working as a pair would be much better...' She continued, fakely oblivious to their obvious dislike for one another. 'Keep those two alive, together as much as possible, until next lesson. Ok?' And before either student could protest- 'Ace.'
Rhian resat herself on the large moss covered tree stump before continuing. 'Right, only one more creature to show you before the end of the lesson. You may have noticed we've had a reptile theme today, well... other than the small interruption from Skull-' Naming him after her favourite wizarding punk band had seemed such a good idea at the time. 'These guys also fall into that category.'
Rhia rummaged behind the stump for several moments before facing the front once more with her hand outstretched. On her palm wiggled what seemed to be a small silvery-green newt which she suddenly began poking with her elm wand. 'Oy... come on... no need to be shy.' After a few more persistant pokes it suddenly expanded about ten times its original size and Rhian grinned. 'So - any takers?'

Thom threw his head back and groaned loudly. It seemed to be no coincidence lately that Zachary and Thom were getting involved with each other more and more, and he wondered how his free will seemed to be getting compromised so easily for other's entertainment. He frowned evilly at Zachary, who was still nursing the hot little lizard. He had no doubt the salamander was already in league with him.
Not wanting to argue with Professor Jones, Thom bit down on his tongue heavily, staring at the oddly sized newt with distaste. Thom absolutely hated anything wriggly and slippery, and dearly wished that he could squash it - mainly to release his frustration.

'Partners sounds about right,' Jerred said, just loud enough for Thom to hear. 'They may become better friends than they already are.'
With a slight chuckle, Jerred sat down in his own seat and watched the fat, floppy worm.

Zachary had ignored most of Boneman's and Moen's conversation, knowing he'd never voluntarily work with Thom so not seeing any need to get involved. Instead, he continued to watch the playful salamander as it crawled up his arm and perched on his shoulder.
As soon as Professor Jones confirmed he and Thom would be working as partners, however, Zachary shot up from his seat, ready to fire a million and one protests. Just as he was about to start a promising tantrum, his salamander chose that moment to hiss loudly in his ear. With a startled yelp, he reeled back and held a hand at his ear, glaring at the salamander.
Only, it wasn't there.
Looking around wildly, not ready to fail his first Care of Magical Creatuers project, he spotted the pesky salamander retreating to a cluster of trees just bordering the clearing.
He gulped, remembering his last encounter with the more eerie parts of the forest, before risking a glance at the Professor. She seemed to be preoccupied with a large newt, disgustingly enough, and there were more than enough heads so that Zachary wouldn't be noticed.
Scowling, he got onto his hands and knees and slowly crawled into the cluster of trees, muttering about all the things he'd do to that salamander once he got a hold of it.
