"Yup, Alicia Goldenburg," Alicia nodded, smiling at thom "Nice to meet you too,"
She heard a noise behind her, and saw a slytherin bang his head on the desk. She gave him a sideways glance, thinking he was a bit odd.

Keifer toddled into the classroom, his spirits high for some reason beknownst to himself. He stood at the back with his arms folded. His fringe proving a difficult task to the fact he couldnt see, and a big cheesy grin on his face.

(( Attendance: H +10, R +10 and S +10 )) Rhian was gladdened to see a few more faces join the class and decided she might as well begin the lesson even if there were a few dawdlers still to come. 'Cymraeg and welcome to Care of Magical Creatures.' Spouting random Welsh had often been a bad habit of hers. 'Right everyone, I'm Rhiannon.. or perhaps I should be saying Professor Jones?' She suggested on an after thought, visibly cringing at the title. Rhia tried imagining what her teenage self would have thought if she had known that she'd eventually end up a teacher -- disgust came into mind.
'I'm going to give you a pretty easy lesson today.' She smirked at the approving looks she received. 'I've been collecting some creatures from the forest over the weekend.' Gesturing at the dense vegetation behind her. 'And all I want you to do for now is have a look at them -- Mr. Cheery Prefect here has already started.' She grinned at the Hufflepuff lad who she had immediately taken a liking to. 'I take it by you little comment that you saw something in the fire.' Rhia said to him, remembering him muttering his disgust a bit earlier.

Thom looked from Professor Jones to the fire, the wood and forest debris fueling it, scorched, the embers throbbing. It would have been comforting if he could take his eyes of the thin pearl-grey serpents moving slowly and gracefully among leaping flames and smoke. A pair of bright red eyes glistened at him, and he stared into them reproachfully.
'They're ash winders. Magical snakes that are born when a magical fire is left for too long unattended. They're a hazard in wizarding households because they eventually leave the fire to go breed under floorboards and behind walls.' He heard their faint hissing. He felt like stamping on them.

"eww," Alicia said looking at the snakes, she had never heard of them before, but judging by Thom description they seemed rather nasty" i would hate to have one of those in my house."

Jerred raised his eyebrow at the snakes and shook his head. The snakes were meant to be a nuisance, but could be tamed easily, or so he was told. Jerred leant back in his chair, letting out a sigh.

Lisa watched the snakes curiously, an eyebrow raising slightly. Then, turning to the professor with an innocent expression, she asked "Has one ever tried to breed them... I mean properly, with the right conditions and environment."

Zachary, who had been quietly sitting against a tree trunk, having slipped past the group unnoticed, stared at the students thoughfully. He remembered when the manor had a nasty case of ash winders, and stared at the Gryffindor disgustedly. Why would anyone ever want to breed them?
Running a hand throgh his hair, he shook his head and waited for the lesson to continue.

Post by Novella Sandler on Aug 24, 2006 11:08:30 GMT
The sound of wings was suddenly audiable. If a student had looked up they would have seen, against the glare of the sun, a small shape, undecernable until it landed, talons digging into the bark of a branch of a small tree. It was the color of dull copper, covered with scales, its horned wings hunched over its small back. Golden eyes looked out at the students with intensity, over the elongated snout, the long fangs visible. To some of the students, it was recognizeable only as a Peruvian Vipertooth. To the few who knew Novella Sandler, they knew he was Loiosh. He twisted his neck back, pulling a scroll of paper from where it was affixed to his back, and tossed it at the Professor's feet. The letters were large and messy, scratched out in ink, with small paw prints at the beginning and ends of each lines. To whom it may concern, Novella Sandler finds herself slightly under-the-weather. Thus, her dragon, Loiosh, will be attending the classes himself, and relaying the information to her later. We hope this is no inconvienience.
Your student, Darin (the ferret)

'Ah bloody hell...' Thom muttered quietly to himself, his face burning a frightening red as the little dragon landed before him. He had been working hard over the summer, pushing himself to no longer be scared witless of dragons. But it hadn't worked. If anything, he hated them even more - and now he was trapped between a vicious little dragon (whose owner he was still rather spooked by) an a legion of rather ugly ashwinders.
Thom stepped towards the fire a little. He'd rather take his chances with them.

Lisa's question was completely forgotten as Loiosh swept down, carrying a letter. She sent a worried look to Thom, who seemed to be carefully stepping away, and bit her lip. She wondered briefly if Novella was alright, and couldn't help but feel a bit curious as to how a dragon could take her place. But she and her pets had a strange bond, that was for certain.
She sat back down, trying to move her gaze away from the dragon and back to the professor.

(( Attendance: G +10 and S +10, also Rhian miraculously knows everyone's names =P )) 'Jeez you lot, you'll be seeing much worse things than these guys over the year.' Rhian laughed as she glanced from one digusted face to another. 'Besides, they aren't that bad-' She continued, eyeing the creatures with as much fondness as you could give slithering, red-eyed snakes. 'Thom's right though -- they're ashwinders, five points to your house. And as for breeding them -- fire, that's all that is needed -- though I wouldn't get attached to them if I was you-' Not that she suspected anyone in this class would by the looks of their faces. '-they only live for an hour, with the sole purpose of laying eggs.'
Rhiannon gestured over to her right where a few ashwinders were slowly making their way into a small, dark crack in a nearby tree trunk. 'And the thing is, half the time the eggs don't survive either -- not only have they got other creatures looking for their next meal to worry about, there's wizards too. The eggs are very handy in the Love Potion industry and if you ever come down with ague - guess what you will be eating to cure it.' She pulled a face.
Before Rhia could say another thing, she felt a slight breeze rush past her cheeks and beamed in surprise when she became face-to-face with a young Peruvian Vipertooth. She looked down at it's golden eyes, and was once again caught in surprise as he dropped a bundle of parchment at her feet. She smiled at him and picked up the parchment -- never had she seen a Vipertooth so well trained, they were well known for their ferocity for humans.
Unfolding the paper, she quickly read the note before glancing back at the dragon with an eyebrow raised. ‘Well, erm, it’s a bit unorthodox I must admit.. but I'm a real sucker for Dragons.' With a small shrug, she smirked, finding it rather surreal that she would be teaching Care of Magical Creatures to a dragon. 'Welcome aboard Loiosh!' She turned back to the class, unaware of the small, what looked at first glance to be a Jack Russell terrier, digging up the earth beside her.

'Oh cool...' Thom said to himself, looking at the happy dog digging. 'A crup!' Thom could see it's forked tail wagging behind him. Thom did not like many animals - but he definitely loved dogs. He thought of his collie, Alex, for a moment, who was still chained up in the Room of Requirement with nowhere else to go. He felt guilty, wishing Alex could be next to the crup, playing.

Lisa slumped back, sending the ash winders a disappointed glance. If they only lived for an hour, Professor Jones was right. It'd be no use taking the time to get attached to them only to have them pulled away in a few moments time.
With a soft sigh, she glanced at the tree trunk, hearing about the properties. Raising an eyebrow, she made note to nick one and maybe study it for a while.
That was when an enthusiastic dog caught her attention. Startled, she turned toward it, before smiling. It was really very cute, and she wondered if they'd get to play with it a bit.

Zachary looked at Moen enviously. Just like a Hufflepuff to excell in this particular class, where one just coddled animals all day. He was skilled in more useful things, like... Potions. Yes, potions. Ever the Slytherin.
"He's going to get points for that," Zachary muttered to himself, "And Hufflepuffs hourglass will continue to escalate. Dear Merlin, I can already feel Hogwarts' worth decrease." He wondered if anyone had heard him, almost hoping they had. He always did think everything he said was quite clever.
