Andie just shrugged. "I don't know." She replied. Simply. Quietly. In an in almost inaudible whisper.

Grace shot Andie a sideways glance. "There it is again," she said, then looked ahead when she added, "this quiet worried you. What's up?" Andie had been acting weird all night and Grace couldn't stand it any longer, She was going to get it out of her whether she liked it or not.

Andie just stared at Grace, her face a cool, blank, unreadable mask; and yet the pain and despair in her eyes were as clear as day. "Nothing." She whispered, as she turned and walked away. Of course it wasn't 'nothing' but she just wasn't ready to talk about it. Not yet at least. Later? Maybe. But now? No.

Grace stopped dead in her tracks. Nothing? she repeated, "nothing?" She ran to catch up with Andie. "What do you mean 'nothing'?" When Andie avoided her gaze, Grace grasped her arm and pulled her back. "It seems like quite a bit of 'nothing!' my dear friend. Come on, you can tell me anything! Anything at all, you know that." Grace tilted her head slightly, catching the light from a nearby oil lamp in her lake blue eyes. ... anything!

Andie sighed in aggravation and spun around to face her friend. "Grace! I'm not ready to talk about it right now so just lay off okay?" Andie's eyes glistened with tears as she continued, "If I wanted to talk about it, I would but I obviously don't want to. Now leave me alone!" With that final outburst she turned and ran down the corridor to get away from Grace. And from her problems.

Grace stared at Andie as she scolded her, every word stabbing. She wanted to chase after her, plague her till she spilled but Grace didn't have the heart to do that so she just watched as Andie ran off. "But ..." she whispered, "I was just trying to help."
She stood transfixed for a long time then recalled why they had turned back. "Scott," she called, remembering her duties, and she began to walk down the corridor back to the stairs. As she walked she thought about what it could be that could make Andie go from laughing to crying and running away in a matter of seconds. Grace was worried.
