((OOC: Haha, you used my real name numbskull! )) "Yeah, I may have heard of him.," he said, leaning back in his seat. "He used to be the headmaster, like, a long while back, right? But, what did he have to do with Voldemort?"

"Yes, Albus Dumbledore was headmaster of this very school, among other things. The greatest headmaster we ever had... In the opinion of some," he added, with a wiggle of his brim something like a wink. "But the story is of Harry Potter. Or, more specifically, how he defeated the Dark Lord -- Lord Voldemort." The hat paused for effect.

Grace had been listening, sitting quietly with her chin on her hand. After a short pause she lifted her head slightly and interjected, "but if this story is about Harry Potter why did you ask if we knew of Albus Dumbledore?"

Girty raised her head off the table. When did enter this room? She thought trying to retrace her steps. She blinked a few times then looked around and heard Graces question to make it seem like she had been listening she thought she would agree with her question. "Here here. I agree." She looked around the room and slowly sank back into her chair.

Lisa looked at the two Hufflepuffs, before returning her gaze to the professor. "Albus Dumbledore had everything to do with the Harry Potter," she said knowingly. Then, realizing her outburst, she looked around for a moment, before grinning sheepishly. "I've read a lot of books on the subject."

Grace nodded at the Griffindor. She had read at most two books on the subject matter. "But why bring him up if he's not going to tell us about him?" she asked.

The hat waited until the chatter had died down, then waved its tassle toward Lisa, chuckling in a pleased manner. "That's right m'dear. Albus Dumbledore, rest his soul, has everything to do with Harry Potter. 10 points to Gryffindor. You see, Albus Dumbledore had seen the Lord Voldemort before he was Voldemort, when he was simply a...very disturbed boy. Albus Dumbledore knew who Voldemort was before he was ready to reveal himself to the world, and thus he was the only wizard Voldemort ever feared. Can anyone tell me what the Dark Lord's true name was?"

Grace knew this. She stuck her hand into the air and answered, "Tom Marvolo Riddle."

"Correct, clever Hufflepuff. 10 points to your house. Tom Marvolo Riddle, named for his muggle father and wizard grandfather. Voldemort was ashamed of his name, and thus mixed it up to form his name. And as you should all know, knowing someone's true name is the most important aspect of destroying them..." The rip which seemed to serve as the hat's mouth smiled crypticly, but he quickly went on. "Now, Albus Dumbledore is important mostly because he kept Harry Potter safe, kept this school safe, until Harry himself was able to defeat Voldemort. Ultimately he died protecting Harry, just as Lily Potter did." The hat paused for a moment, turning as if to look around the room, Ethelion standing silently behind it. "Now... there have been many books, as you mentioned, written on the subject of Harry Potter. But in reality very, very few people know the true story of how exactly he defeated Lord Voldemort, and fewer of these still remain alive. You have the honor of being taught Ancient Runes by one of them, but don't go asking him. He won't tell you. Another vanished many years ago. And the last... is myself." The hat stopped, the room full of the gravity of this burden, sensed by all the students as it bent over slightly, in a semblance of exaustion. "But..." It straighted up, "Your Professor has convinced m that times change, and time has certainly passed... that now it is time for that secret to be revealed."

Lisa looked pleased with herself for earning the points, and sent the hat a delighted smile. She blinked in surprise as he mentioned their Runes teacher and her eyes were widened to their fullest once he finished. Not one book she had ever told her how exactly Voldemort had been defeated- Sure they suggested vague details, but never something like this. Leaning forward in her seat, she waited for the tale, excitement shiningin her eyes.

Grace may not have read many books on The Great Dumbledore but the defeat of one of the most powerful wizards of the previous century was something to prick her ears up. She gazed at her teacher and was shocked to find that he knew what had happened. This was the most exciting class in a long time, she was happy she had gotten out of bed this morning.

Girty shuffled back up in her seat and looked at the hat waiting for it to continue. Her heart was pounding in her chest this seemed to be a lesson of some use.

Draco looked up from his desk, his previous boredom forgotten. Raising his eyebrows, he leaned back in his seat and listened intently to the worn out hat. There was a glint in his eye as he thought about how much his father would love to hear this information, and he took out some parchment for notes.

Helia jolted slightly, "Are... are you sure that's something that needs to be revealed?" she asked, thinking that, yes, it was fascinating and she'd love to know what really happened... but also that if certain people knew what happened, they might try to bring the dark lord back if there was any way to... and that could be disasterous.

"Okay Professor, I gotta interrupt you for a second here," Fin said cynically (sp?). "Knowing someone's name is not the most important step in destroying them. Knowing their weakness, is the most important step! A name has nothing to do with it!'
