Diana looked up as the girl walked up to her. She was utterly surprised that the Gryffindor girl was being rather civil. However, when she took out her hand to shake Diana decided to make peace. Shaking it she nodded lightly, "Diana Fortuna." She tended to be used to getting that kind of treatment from other houses, however, it was nice every once in a while to be caught off guard with a civil one.
Yes, she was taught when she was younger that she should only really associate with her type, but her grandmother taught her that whether the person be muggle or pure that she should treat them with decent respect. She had been sent to the finest etiquette classes and so it really stuck to her, as well. However, it was nice that Diana had much to many things on her mind. Otherwise they could have ended in a duel. It was nice to do something 'not so dramatic' every once in a while.
Diana smiled as the Professor spoke. It made sense but she did hope that by her parent's skill in things of this sort, that made her learn it a bit quicker.

"Why?" he asked, "is one of your parents Occlumens?" he asked curiously. If they were than she may be more responsive than some other Slytherins in the room. "If they raised you right than you may very well succeed this class."he said, keeping in mind that if she wasn't that she would be at the same level of inexperience than the other students.

Diana felt all the eyes on her as she spoke again. Generally she liked it but when talking about her personal life she got a bit nervous. "Well yes.." she started as she caught eye contact with Professor Goth. "I mean... my parent's are both rather skilled at Legilimens and Occlumens," she said lightly. She even to this day could never lie to her parent's for they always knew what she was thinking. "I mean... I've tried to counter some of their acts.. but that's why I'm in this class," she said lightly. She could only hold her parent's back for no longer than a minute, but if she had the training she could be good enough so that when she had to lie it was kept that way, or at least she could try, she thought to herself.

"Oh, that brings up a good point, don't think weird or dirty thoughts, because I will know." he said smiling. "Also, another thing is if you are good in this class than you'd be good in Legilimency, probably." he said, hoping that all the students would be good because if they weren't he would be in deep stuff this entire year.

Diana giggled lightly. "I'm sure that is why the skill of Occlumens and Legilimens is both a gift and a pain," she said lightly. She could only imagine how teachers who could do it, could keep straight faces. If I were a teacher an I heard things that I shouldn't be hearing I'd die for laughter, she thought to herself.

"Well least when you know them you can both lie and not be lied to. I guess that is the most important thing about both of these subjects. When you know Legilimency, you don't really have to give people much trust, and when you know Occlumency some people lose trust in you because you can lie to them easier." he said, to him it was more of a gift.

Jac, now in her seat, had her quill ready and was taking notes in a note pad. She held up her hand and asked, "professor, can you turn it off? Can you make it so that you don't hear there thoughts? And can you channel it to hear the thoughts of someone far away?"

"Well you can only preform Occlumency by ridding yourself of all emotion, so that's how you turn it off. Also, Legilimency can be used from far distances, but I have to be able to know who they are. I get major headaches when I extract painful thoughts from people." He hoped that answered both of her questions.

Diana looked at the Professor curiously. "Oh... don't you have to have eye contact... or does it just work better if you do?" she asked him curiously. This, she could tell, was going to be on of her more favorite subjects.

"For it to be most effective you need to have eye contact, but if your skill is mastered to it's complete extent than you can preform both without eye contact. That is why you need to be protected from those people, and Occlumency is our protection." he said knowing that some students need to know that their is protection, but most in this class seemed brave so he wouldn't have to worry.

Bellatrix had been told by an extremely skilled wizard that eye contact was essential to legilimency and she was fairly certain that you need to preform legilimency on purpose to read someone elses thoughs. It wasnt that you just heard what everyone thought automatically. Bella didn't think she would be returning for the next lesson. The professor didn't sound like he had the slightest idea what he was talking about.
"Professor are you sure you dont have to have eye contact?" she asked politely.

"Well first of all it's not reading a mind. A mind is not a book that can be pondered freely. I may be young, but I've had to learn my entire life. If you had listened I said to a complete extent. I have not even fully masted it, it'll probably take me twenty more years just to be able to read someone else's thought on another floor." he said. My mother could hear my thought when I was at school about a mile away. She was passed out on the couch when I came home, but let me tell you every time I flunked a test she knew about it." he said. "but if you don't believe, fine. You can take lessons from a deaf 80 year old man who charges you money every hour." he said calm, but he was losing his temper. "It also could just be mind capability, or like what Diana said, maybe if you're parents are trained you are born with the skill. no one really knows about this skill." he said, he couldn't believe it, but it was a fact. Not much was written about Occlumency.

Bella sighed and sat back in her chair. The skill was indeed in her family. Infact, the ancestor for whom she was named was a rather accomplished legilimens. She knew she would be to. She was just good at things she did. There was not much more to it than that.

Diana watched them both intently. "So when do we start," she spoke in an excited tone. She really would like to start as soon as possible but she didn't mind if the Professor would like to wait either. The excitement in her eyes was much too visible and so she went back to reading in the book. She didn't want people thinking that she had grown too soft on one subject; however, she could tell that she was going to love learning in this class.

Bella turned and observed her friend, who was acting very Ravenclawish. She had also spoken kiindly to a Gryffindork, which was very out of character. Maybe she was just having an off day....
Anyway, Bella looked to the teacher for further instruction.
