Faye smiled appreciatively. It had been such a long time since she'd taught a young, normal witch. Most of her past students had been those of a position, those who could afford to hire her. It felt so odd teaching someone who did not think themself above her. Faye looked on ahead, her chest swelling with happiness.
The sun came out as the walked, and mixed with the crisp sea air it felt healthy and refreshing. They mounted the dunes now, both laughing at the dry sand eroded beneath their feet, making them fight their way to the top.
"There!" Faye called through the wind. Water rippled and glistened in the distance...

Girty smiled. And with a small nod she ran off towards the water. She skidded to a halt and lay onto the ground at the perfect distance to see a small duck swimming around the water. It was completely black apart from a small white band on its face. Girty rested her head in her hands and watched the creature swim around slowly.

Faye joined Girty at a steadier pace. She kneeled down in the sand, touching the sharp grass, holding it in her hands and savouring the realness. Girty had such a vivid imagination.
She looked at the water, and could see Girty's gaze upon a small jet black bird with a white spot on it's head. "A coot," she whispered, lying down on her stomach. For a moment she thought it odd that she could see nothing else, then it occured to her...

"Yeah a Coot. Beautiful creatures." She was amazed before she noticed the look on Vedette's face. "What is wrong professor?"

Faye gave a secretive smile, placing the grass between her lips. "Oh, I don't know. A coot - hard working, harmless, friendly, cute... sounds just like a Hufflepuff." she laughed sweetly. "Do you like coots, Girty?" she asked.
Faye gasped suddenly as her tongue pricked the sharp grass. Raising her fingers to her mouth, she touched her tongue. "Oh..." she said as she inspected the blood on the tip of her thumb.

Girty looked back at the Coot as she watched it float on the water. Then almost as if they caught each others eyes they held eye contact before the bird flew off over there heads. Girty watched in amazement. "Are you trying to say this is my creature? As she turned and noticed that Vedetta was bleeding Girty pulled out her wand and before anything could be done she spoke. "Episkey" Suddenly the image started to shake and started to flash violently with them appearing in many different events in Girty's life.

The wind picked up as the memory started to shake, and Faye grabbed onto her thick hair and held it at the back of her head to keep it out of her face. "Steady, Girty - no magic remember?"
Everything was spinning - memory after memory swirled around them, black and white ones blending into coloured ones, Girty at different ages passing through one another likes ghosts. Everything was very unstable now, and Faye had to latch onto Girty's hand to stop them seperating. Faye realised she'd never be able to escape Girty's mind if they lost each other. "Girty - only you can stop this!" Faye called.

Girty rolled her eyes as they spun around in the ever changing void. "What I'm i meant to do shout out any spell in vain hope it will help!" She was having to shout over the sound of the wind rushing past her ears, but as she looked at the professor her expression gave her hope that she could do it. Girty racked her mind and the shouted out the first spell that came to her head. "Finite Incantatem!"
Suddenly everything stopped spinning and they hid the floor with a bump.

Faye and Girty were silent for a long time, their breathing erratic at first, but then became slower, gentler...
They were both lying on their backs in the middle of the classroom floor, the stone beneath their shoulders cold and rough. The mental energy had clearly been strong enough to physically throw them backwards. Faye laughed softly, recovering. Her head spun as she sat up. "Well, Girty... that was quite an adventure!" she was still giggling. "Fifteen points for pulling us out with that Finite Incantatem charm."
The sun had gone down now, and only the one torch in the corner of the room flickered. Waving her wand, there others burst into flame.

Girty continued to look at the ceiling, she could her the professor giggling by her but she was lost in her own thoughts. However when the room filled with light it woke her from her dreaming and she sat up. "Now what? I ruined it didn't I" she asked despairingly.

Faye tilted her head to one side as she looked at Girty. "You shouldn't doubt yourself so much, my dear," she said, smiling. "We infact, did exactly what we set out to do. We entered the Void and we found your inner spirit." she paused. "Your Animagus form is a coot."
Faye took hold of two chairs and pulled them towards the center of the room where Girty was. "Up you come," she patted the chair. "Grace will be most happy to hear that her friend is a bird, as she intends to be!"

Girty smiled as she stood up and moved towards the chair. As she sat down she looked tot eh professor with a puzzled face. "OK so we know that animal but now what. Surely i can not just change now."

"Indeed you can't." Faye waved her wand, and two glasses of water appeared in the air before them. She handed one to Girty. "Drink it, you'll be worn out." she said. "As I was saying, no. But we have taken the first step to getting there. You now know what creature is inside you - the one that has been apart you since birth. A coot is the definitive symbol of who you are, Girty. Now we must work to get you truly in touch with the bird. You must get to know it, to become it. Then there are ways you can transform..."

Girty took the water gratefully and sipped it while the professor talked. "Well I'm willing to try anything." She smiled as she reached for her bag and pulled out a chocolate bar. "So what are the different ways of transforming then professor?"

"There are. Usually the first transformation occurs under strict conditions - planned circumstances. That is how I changed for the first time. Sometimes though extreme fear or stress can highten a person's instincts, thus letting the animal take over. This can be quite traumatising though, so I do not intend to scare you witless." she laughed. "There are also spells for the less able... special potions that can aid a being. These can be damaging though." Faye sighed, remembering the faye of one young witch who had to be hospitalised. "Hopefully we will do it the controlled way for you."
