Mort stood under a tree on a chilly November day. A chilly breeze blew off the lake and he pulled his cloack tighter. He sat down and skipped rocks across the lakes glassy surface, but no sooner than he threw the third stone he stood up again as he saw someone approaching.

Grace had wondered out of the noisy common room and moved out of the castle all together. She had a large book under one arm. She wanted a quiet place to look it through. The lake would be quiet now with the chill settling in, she thought and made her way there.
As she approached she caught the glimmer of a slytherin badge. Great, just what I need, she thought and whirled around, sitting where she fell. She faced the lake, opened her book and began to page slowly through the book trying to ignore the slytherin.

Mort looked at Grace trying to catch her eye. After failing to do so he felt a little hurt. He thought Grace and he were friends. What was going on? He sighed and hesitantly asked, "Um Grace are you ok?"

Grace jumped up, dropping her book and backing off like a frightened beast. Then she saw it was just Mort. She flopped onto all fours and panted heavily. After having caught her breath she looked up at Mort and smiled. "You should know better then to sneak up on people," she said, pushing herself to her feet. "Especially when they're 'reading'," she added, bending down and picking up the big book.

Grace smiled and sat down again. She opened the book again at the first page. It was a photo album, a very large thick photo album. "Nothing much," she said absently. "You?" She was clearly distracted by the photos in the book and as she turned the pages tears of joy filled her eyes.

He smiled at Grace again and sat back down. He sighed wondering what to say next. "So, what are you looking at?" he asked staring at her.

Grace pointed to a photo and said, "see this? This is me and mum at the beach near our old house. I was four there, and she was still happy ... then!" She smiled and sniffed, while turning the page. "And here, Father is playing with mum in the garden. Mum had just been gardening and Father had come home from work. Mum loved her garden, and maybe that's the reason ..." she shook her head.
"This was in Father's possession when he died." She turned another page and smiled, "here is Father and mum on the veranda, the day before we moved to new house, the last night we were really happy. After that it all fell apart." And with that she slammed the book shut and smiled up at Mort. "So what you doing here?" she asked, trying to change the subject.

Mort smiled at Grace longing to make her feel better. He heard the last thing she asked and he sobered up. "Nothing. Just clearing my head." and he sighed. "You know I think I might go." he said standing up.

"Go?" Grace repeated, putting the heavy book beside her, "go where?" She frowned and tilted her head at Mort, curious to see where he had to be, after all he did just get there!

Mort sighed and sat back down. He couldnt say no to that beautiful face. He stared at her intently, "so." he said barely louder than a whisper.

Grace smiled. Mort always knew how to make her smile. "So ..." she whispered back with a giggle, "so why we whispering?" She laughed out loud and sighed. She ran her fingers throught her hair and smiled over the lake.

Grace smiled and whispered back, are you sure it's not because of the-" she checked over both her shoulders, then whispered even softer "-The Lord High Inquisitor?" Then she giggled like a girl, Gracie my dear you really do need to cut down on TV!

Mort laughed, "It might be!" he wispered back. He started rolling around in laughter and finally got a grip. He sighed.Mort was amazed at how much she cheered him up.
