It was past midnight and one by one students were yawning, saying their goodnights and departing to bed. Holly sat in the corner, hiding behind a volume of A Brief History of Wand-Making by Frederick Chroniculus. The assignment was due for another couple of weeks, but it didn't hurt to get a head start. Besides, she wasn't tired. Holly usually managed just fine on five or six hours sleep a night. She would stay here until she was the last one awake. She liked the common room best when it was empty. She was thinking of her mother, and how she should write home soon. She'd been sick following a backfiring sleeping charm - she too suffered with sleeplessness. She put Chroniculus' book down, and resolved to begin a letter. Dear Mum... What was that? There was an electricity fizzing in the air; a ghost of magic, perhaps. A quiet tap, and a quick tinkle of metal on metal. A necklace, set with a blue stone, had appeared in the grate of the fireplace. It glistened in the dimming fire light.

Loren tightened the knot in her dressing gown a little more, the warm snug material comforting. It had been a very long day for Loren, what with the closing of two exams and a long homework session helping second years in the library, but she still wanted to get in at least an hours reading before she wriggled under her sheets and settled down.
As she finished descending the spiral stairs from her dorm, she saw that the common room was almost empty - only another girl and two seventh year boys, who were just tacking up a notice with a few items for sale, were left. Loren waited patiently for them to leave up to the boy's dorms before she walked toward the fireplace.
She stopped however when she saw the other girl studying something on the grate, an expression of puzzlement on her face. Loren stepped quietly closer, leaning forward to inspect the girl's line of sight. She then saw what it was: a beautiful blue necklace. 'Is that yours?' She asked.

'No... it... it just appeared,' said Holly. She was tempted to put it on, but her better judgement reminded her it could be full of dark magic. In fact, even touching it had been a bit foolish. The blue of the pear-shaped gem was like no precious stone she had seen before. The right thing to do would be to take it to a teacher. Yet Holly was giddy with the thought of researching this item herself - think of the secrets she might uncover! She told Loren she planned to keep it and to look it up in the library tomorrow.
