Girty had woken up early and was sitting down at the Hufflepuff table tapping a piece of cold toast on her plate. She was thinking very hard over what had happened in the past few days and how one stupid thing can spread and cause so much trouble. Today she decided that she would sort it all out, make sure that nothing can come of the situation again. All she needed now was for the person to turn up.

Thom had spent the night on the opposite side of the lake from Hogwarts. He had been with Novella, Darin and Loiosh, savoring the last warm nights of summer while he still could. Soon the leaves would colour and fall, and the snow would freeze everything it touched, and it would be unlikely that Novella and Thom could spent nights together without catching frost bite. He was tired but happy, and as he walked along the Hufflepuff table for breakfast, and knew that nothing could burst the happy little bubble that had swelled in his chest.
Until he saw Girty, that was. He felt a little deflated suddenly, knowing that the conversation that would ensure if she saw him would be grim and pointless. He was about to turn on his heel and dart away before she could see him, but at that moment she looked up from her toast and fixed him with her eyes...

Girty saw Thom. Her heart stopped for a second as she looked him in the eye. Come on girl this is it. She told herself. She opened her mouth and kept eye contact. "Thom...I...I think we need to...to talk." She stuttered her way through the sentence and reached for her drink. Her mouth had gone dry, and her eyes had started to sting as she had not blinked in a long time. She closed her eyes and looked back to her cold toast. "Look Thom i know you are likely to walk away or ignore everything i say but i have to talk to you."

Thom was silent as he gave a closed lip smile that did not portray any happiness, only willingness. He looked about him as he sat down, his leg suddenly itching terribly, but he refused to loose composure to scratch it. He folded his arms in front of himself and looked at Girty expressionlessly. 'I know you want to talk... but... sorry.' he said the last word quickly.

Girty smiled at Thom hopping to make him more comfortable. "You know you need to stop saying sorry. You face looks stupid when you say it." She gave a small laugh and looked over the table and pulled over a plate. "Toast?" She offered him the plate and took a slice herself. While she was buttering it she thought about what to say. Millions of words sprang into her head but none where of the few words that caused all this mess. Then it came to her what she had to say and what she had to do. First she knew she had to be calm and act normal, act like they did before any of this happened and second of all she had to reassure him. "I want you to understand that this talk will not repeat any of those words which the other day seemed so disgusting to you." Once again she offered him a smile in hope that he would reply.

Thom gave a small, genuine laugh. People had said before that he made the stupidest expressions when he was trying to be modest or apologetic. He was surprised when Girty offered him a rack of toast, and he took a rather burnt slice gingerly, dragging a pot of jam towards himself and dipping the triangle in absent mindedly.
'What you said didn't disgust me, Girt,' he said honestly when she had stopped speaking. 'I was just... taken aback. It was my first reaction to go against everything you said. I'm -' he stopped abruptly, having been about to apologies again. He gave a small smile as he bit into his toast.

Girty laughed and too chewed on her toast. She pured herself a mug of tea and stirred it around lazily. "Never mind Thom if you want to say sorry then you can but i think it is truly me who has to say sorry more. I should never have landed this upon you. Heck i never wanted anything to happen. It was well...." Girty broke off and looked back to her half chewed toast now not feeling very hungry. "It was said and there is not much can be done now but move on."

He tossed the toast down onto a nearby place and sighed silently as he picked up a glass of pumpkin juice. 'So... is everything alright now? We safe?' he asked carefully, looking at her with raised eyebrows. It had been very difficult for Thom not to be friends with Girty. He remembered that she had been the first person in Hogwarts to become a real friend.

Girty looked up from her plate and looked at Thom. "Yeah were safe. Just make sure that Novella treats you right." Girty gave him a wink then giggled stupidly before regaining control while picking up and apple. She was still not hungry anything was better then just leaving Thom on his own.
She thought hard about starting a conversation with Thom. It seemed like it would be a while before there friendship would be how it used to be. "The weather is changing fast." Girty winched at how pathetic that statement was but as her brother always said, "If you have nothing better say mention the weather."

Thom hid his smirk. 'Yes... lots of leaves. Forest should be looking nice round about now.' he thought about his last couple of visits into the forest, one involving Girty - the visit that started this whole mess. He wished he had not mentioned it. 'I'll be snowing soon. Fancy making a snowman army and enchanting them to attack each other? Should be a laugh... we'll have to make sure there isn't a comet around this time, or we might just end up snowman food.' he laughed.

Girty laughed at the thought of a snowman army. "Yes that would be fun." she nodded slowly and tucked some of her hair behind her ear. She leaned forward and took a sip of her tea only to start chocking on it. After a few moments of coughing she took a deep breath and giggled. "Even the simple things i can not do right."

Thom shook is head. 'Doesn't matter. You didn't make any mistakes.' he said, standing up wearily. 'Well... do you want to do something now? We could go do a bit of quidditch. I think its a Hogsmede weekend today so we could go there too. I think Honeydukes are doing a discount for Christmas.' he smiled hopefully.

Girty smiled and nodded. "Yes that would be fun Thom." She took a final mouthful of tea and stood up and looked at Thom. "I can buy you that owl i said i was going to get you at the end of last year." Girty giggled and looked at Thom to see what his reaction would be.

Thom raised his eyebrows and laughed doubtfully. 'Think it would be a case of getting the poor thing to like me, Girt. That bloody goldfish has made three attempts to escape. Looks like it would rather dry up than be with me.' he picked up his fur collar coat and hat, pulling them on as he stepped over the bench and began to walk with Girty.
The Hufflepuff had once had an owl. It had been a family one that was well trained and very efficient - but it had come to an untimely end when Thom and had accidentally pelted into it on his broomstick on a particularly foggy morning. He had been drowning in guilt ever since, refusing any animal that was offered to him.
But perhaps an owl would not be so bad now. It could eat the fish.

When Thom hopped over the bench she looked over to him and laughed. "So into the bitter cold it is." She giggled and picked up her bag and coat. "I hope you have some money to treat me to a warm drink." She giggled as they left the great hall and head to the main entrance. As they pushed open the door a cold wind hit them. Girty's hair blew around as she took a deep breath and stepped into the cold.
