It was tangible, how electric this day was. The kind of afternoon where you felt as if anything you looked at would explode from the mere meeting of your eyes-that all the energy in the world had roiled and festered in your stomach, barely contained by its fleshy bindings. The air burned with crisp distinction, billowing in and out of lungs belonging to busied bodies scuttling to and fro in their daily mindings. Life was moving, completely unaware of the little bright-haired human sitting outside the candy store. A simple, insignificant creature in a world so bulged with people it was near its boiling point. Yet here she was, eyes rapt and sparkling; a smile so sweet on her face.
Why, one might ask, was she sitting outside of Honeydukes, rather than treating herself to the marvellous displays inside? Wouldn't she rather reward her eyes with candy rather than brick walls and alleyways? Bask in the sun instead of the shade? Truly, she preferred outside.. There was more room to breathe, less bodies, and such a vast open expanse around her where she could simply move without interference that she couldn't think of a single reason why she should step inside. Well, perhaps one. There was the lovely fragrances that, with every opening and closing of the shop doors, wafted enticingly for but a moment before abandoning her again. Yes, there was one reason.
The next time the door opened however a great gummy gust exploded from inside, sending pink shattered bits ricocheting into the streets. The shock sent her toppling forward, palms scraping against pavement as her eyes widened a touch, only for a second or two before her face fell neutral once again. Peering into the window revealed only that, for lack of a better phrase, battle royale had ensued inside. The candy was revolting and hell, they were pissed.

A stampede of customers rushed out of the store, some older students casting spells behind them, trying to stop charging fizzing whizbees and chocolate frogs in their tracks, or at least slow them down, while licorice wands threw up shielding charms and sent spells right back at the poor candy store patrons.
One soul did not seem disturbed by the disruption, however.
Jinx meandered out of the store, a strangely calm presence amongst the chaos of the sacron sweet soldiers and the startled witches and wizards trying to keep their Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans from crawling up into their nasal cavities and jumping into their ears. She licked a rainbow lollipop the size of her head, despite it's attempts to hit her with its stick.
"Well, that's one thing off my to-do list today," she said with a smile, feeling that the balance of the food chain had been adequately evened out thanks to her vivificus spell. She slurped merrily on her struggling lollipop, quite enjoying the view as pumpkin pasties went kamikaze on peoples shoes and candy cauldrons started boiling over and exploding in peoples shopping bags. "Now what's next..."
She pulled a list out of her robes pocket and studied it, "Invite the Screaming Banshees to do a live concert at Madam Puddifoots, check; Give the candy a chance for revenge at Honeyduke's, check; Wrap the Shreiking Shack in an enchanted tea garden... no check. Well, looks like I've got the rest of my afternoon planned out. I think I'll just enjoy the show for a bit before I get back to work though," she said to herself, walking over to a bench and sitting down. She stuck the list back in her pocket and continued to slurp on her lollipop as the battle of the candy shop continued.

The perfect image of tranquility then stepped out of the candied chaos, an expression of triumph on her face despite having difficulty with the lollipop that was trying to stab her. It writhed in her grasp, twisting its head angrily with each scrape of her tongue and with every tiny, near-inaudible shriek Dania stared, transfixed. Licorice snakes had twined themselves in little first years' hair and they toppled out the front door, clearly at an odds with what to do with themselves. Black eyes glanced to the window pane before falling back on the girl who was now seated beside her, enjoying herself as the little world of Honeydukes crashed and burned in its tiny, contained environment. It was like watching the destruction of an ant colony; their entire universe was collapsing down within itself.
Though she didn't know many personally the Hufflepuff recognised her as a housemate, at least somewhat. Her name couldn't possibly be classified as one people could easily forget, unless they were half brain-dead. Clasping her gloved hands together Dania parted her lips, still unsure at what she could say. What could one say in this situation? "Jinx, bringer of chaos." She remarked in her trademark quiet tone, despite the startling and uncharacteristic grin smattered on her face. She paused, watching the ground for a moment as if debating on what to say to convey her curiousity. There was so much, though Dania was never one to have a case of uneccessary word vomit. "How?" The fifth year left it at that; it was common knowledge she hadn't much expertise with magic, a near-constant stream of questions without answers seemed to flutter hopelessly from her mouth even at the best of times.

"Hardly chaos," Jinx said, determinedly focused on keeping her lollipop from escaping. "It's just a cycle of life. Dog eat dog, man versus man, it's only fair that man eat candy should at some point be reversed to candy versus man, and better I restore the balance than some dark wizard at some point in the future trying to brainwash the students of Hogwarts with his addictive and hypnotic sugary sweetes."
Jinx began to giggle as something began tickling her foot. She looked down and found a chocolate frog furiously biting her heel, but with a lack of appropriate dentures, all he managed to do was smear chocolate on her foot and give her a fit of laughs. She scooped the little guy up and smiled, "You're a determined little fella, huh? What can I do for you?" She pulled out her wand and scratched her temple with it as she thought. "You're already more or less alive, and you've clearly got personality, so how about... ritus spiritus!" The chocolate frog looked ill. He began to dull in color, like when chocolate has melted and reformed and melted and reformed a few too many times and ends up turning into caked up cocoa powder, only then he began turning green and slimy. A moment later he hiccuped and a large shimmering purple bubble escaped his maw. It burst and purple glittery confetti flittered all about the girls' hair and clothes.
Jinx smiled, "Alrighty, then, go find a swamp and live happily ever after, huh?" The frog croaked happily, a yellow shimmery bubble floating into the air this time, then he hopped away. She then returned her attention to her fellow classmate, "Oh, it was just a few simple animation spells layered on top of each other, sandwiched with a couple of emotion charms. They won't last very long though, ten, maybe fifteen minutes more at the most. Last Hogsmeade trip I heard Mister Honeyduke bragging about how his candy had never done him wrong. I told him there was a first time for everything. He said, the day his candy failed him would be the day he gave a smart alec like me a free ever-changing, never fading sucker," a blase, though mildly pleased smile hung around the corners of her lips as she continued to lick her rainbow lolly. "Equality and mediation prove themselves again. Care for a lick?"

Xander had been quite enjoying he weekend trip to Hogsmeade and had already quenched his thirst and was just leaving the Three Broomsticks when he heard the commotion coming from Honeydukes. Xander being a Gryffindor thought he should live up to his name and go check it out.
As he walked toward the candy shop he noticed various people running away from it and it appeared as if they were being attacked by candy. "Hmm... attacked by candy," Xander thought, "Now that's a clever idea, I wonder who could have done such a thing?" It was only after he had asked himself this question that he noticed the two Hufflepuffs standing near the entrance to Honeydukes conversing in a relatively calm fashion. One of these two girls he recognized as the notorious Jinx.
Jinx was an odd Hufflepuff girl who had a reputation for "equaling things out" and it had become a habit of many of the underclassmen to blame Jinx whenever something went wrong. For example, if Xander got back his Charms homework with poor marks he would just say "Oops, I guess Jinx got a hold of my homework and wanted to 'equal things out'!" Then they would all have a laugh and go on with their day. Xander had never actually met the strange girl but assumed that the candy attack was of her doing. So he decided to finally meet this girl and see if she stood up to the rumors and was as odd as everyone said.
After deciding this he approached the Hufflepuffs and inquired as to why they were still standing in front of the candy store while the candy that escaped wreaked havoc on them as passersby. As he said this he began to get assaulted by Licorice Whips and banged in the head by Fizzing Whizzbees.

A giggle escaped Jinx as a funny little blond haired boy walked up to herself and her fellow Hufflepuff asking why they were still standing outside the rebelling candy shop, but before she could reply that she was watching the spell play itself out, the boy himself was attacked by a gang of sweets that had been hiding nearby, waiting to ambush someone. The licorice snakes were soon tangled into his hair, giving his blond curls the funny effect of having black dreadlocks mixed in with them.
"Finite ilico," she said, and a shower of silver sparkles fell over the candy surrounding the boy. All the sugary treats instantly stopped moving... except her own lollipop, which still whined and squirmed in her hand. After returning her wand to her pocket she asked him, "You alright? They didn't bang you up too bad did they?" she asked concernedly, not showing any sympathy to a pair of Ravenclaws just a few feet away who were furiously fighting off a barrage of assaults from exploding snap cards, candy cauldrons, and little marzipan sorcerers. "Care for a licorice?" she asked, pulling one out from behind his ear and holding it up, a genuinely generous smile upon her face.

As Xander was attacked by the candies he was determined to retain his composure despite the black licorice winding itself into his perfectly groomed hair. He was silently grateful when Jinx lifted the spell from the candies attacking him.
"Yes, I'm quite alright. Thank you." Xander replied politely and seeing an opportunity he turned on his unmistakable charm and said, "My name is Alexander Bradly but you can call me Xander. I presume that you are the exquisite creature known as Jinx. How do you do?" At these final words Xander fell into a slight bow as he kissed her hand holding a licorice whip from his hair.
Xander waited for the girl's reply noticing that she was not unattractive in her own sense. She was quite beautiful in an exotic way and if he played his cards right (and he always did) he just might be able to walk away from this encounter with another trophy on his shelf. All the while this was traversing through Xander's head he kept flashing his most charming and bright smile in Jinx's direction.

The atmosphere felled to interruption as a dreadlocked-wait, no, licorice-snake adorned boy, joined them, though 'them' was a lofty word to describe it. She felt no disappointment in his blatant ignorance of her presence.. Dania would rather talk to a traffic light than participate in a conversation that existed only, truly, to fuel his over-inflated ego. It was amusing to her eyes, observing them. Watching quietly now the corner of her mouth quirked, seemingly into the smallest of smiles that even the other two couldn't possibly discern as expression. It seemed he rather had his eyes on Jinx--though his eyes told another story, one of conquer and triumph rather than fancy--and as he bazooka'd his 100-kilowatt smiles in her direction Dania laughed aloud, a startling sound from the personification of silence that was she. "Is your mouth broken?" Her soft and quiet voice barely held the amused note, though it was evident that while he may be under the impression his facade could fool anyone, she would not be tricked. Her black eyes stared at him, almost all the way through; unable to be described as hard as she was never acted in that manner though they were very close.
So strange, that some considered others to be animals. No lesser than cattle to be branded and put to pasture the moment a higher-prized animal waltzed through the entrance to the barn. She would not be fooled. This was simply a game to him, was it not? Dania wondered how his hand was now, if the deck had granted him the right cards. Her black eyes narrowed only slightly, though it was barely noticeable unless one looked closely. As her emotions were near-constant one had to rely on subtle changes in expression to recognize her true feelings, then again in this case it was hard to mistake her opinion, silent as it was.

Before she could catch it, Jinx loosed a mirthful giggle. 'What a ladies man!' she thought, highly amused at how young they were starting out. He couldn't be more than a third year, probbably not even, and here she was already in her O.W.L. years. But surely the young man knew how inappropriate it would be for him to be seriously flirting with her, and so she merely took it as the young man knowing good manners and how to be a gentleman... or perhaps he just tried to woo every girl he saw. Who could tell?
"I am, indeed, the Jinx of lore," she said playing up the theatrics of his introduction. "I am quite well, good sir, and may I say, if you are the Alexander Bradly I hear all the first, second, and third year girls twittering about about in the loo, I am quite honored to make your acquaintance," she curtsied to him, then, still holding his hand, spun him around a couple times and went into a waltz. It was a bit awkward considering he was a good foot shorter than her, but it wasn't as if it were a legitimate dance. Purely for fun, and definitely one of the more interesting ways to get to know a person from her experience, and yes, she had indeed greeted people this way on more than one occasion. Always a good ice breaker.
After wobbling around the cobblestone street for a while, Jinx spun Xander round and round again til they ended right back up where they had been before. She curtsied once more, then looked at her fellow Hufflepuff to see if, perhaps, she wanted a turn to dance, though the reaction that greeted her was far less welcoming than what she'd expected. It took all her willpower not to hex the girl's tongue to the roof of her mouth, 'Probably a misunderstanding,' she tried to talk herself down. Surely no Hufflepuff could ever be so rude upon a first impression of a person, that kind of judgement was best left for the Slytherins and Ravenclaws. Then she finally recognized the girl whom she'd been conversing with previous to the young Gryffindor's appearance. Dania Dahl, the ice queen of the Hufflepuff house.
Jinx took a deep, tired breath. She hated it when older students were so unnecessarily rude to younger ones who were jsut trying to make friends, but she composed herself, "His mouth works just fine, see all those pearly whites?" she asked rhetorically. "Let's see if mine works shall we?" she turned to the little boy and flashed her absolute biggest, face-stretching, jaw aching smile. "Howzhat?" she asked, keeping the almost frighteningly cheerful smile upon her face, thus making it hard to articulate the question. "Izhit werrrking?" her eyes were squinted all awkward like, and she now wondered if it were true that the ever-changing-never-fading lollipops turned your teeth all the colors of the rainbow.

Xander ignored the cold stare from the other Hufflepuff standing there. At least she was said to be of the Hufflepuff house. Her actions were more of the characteristics of a cold snake but she was of no consequence to Xander. He had his eyes set on Jinx.
And as his eyes returned to Jinx he replied to her inquiry. "Yes, I do believe that I am that Alexander Bradly but you my dear lady can be counted among my circle of friends and may call me Xander." He flashed her another one of his smiles at her greatly entertained by the theatricality of their conversation but decided to play it up and milk it. He was then slightly taken aback when she whirled him into a waltz.
Jinx was an exquisitely graceful dancer and Xander obliged by waltzing away with her trying to make up the awkwardness of the dance due to his height with his charm and grace. As the dance wound to a graceful end back where they began, Xander bowed once more and lightly kissed her hand. He was very skilled in playing the gentleman card as there were very few today who did.
As he turned back to the other Hufflepuff to introduce himself, because he now thought it proper to at least acknowledge her presence and was taken aback by her insult but before he could reply that his mouth was fine and he was just trying to be polite Jinx shot her words right back at her. And as Jinx smiled her exaggerate smile at him he could not help but smile back and let a small giggle escape. "Yes, Jinx my lady, it is working astonishingly well. Your smile is a dazzling rainbow of color."
Xander only now noticed the time and knew that he still had his Charms homework to finish so he figured now would be the best time to excuse himself. "And now I must take leave of you for my dreaded Charms homework awaits me in the castle. It was the very definition of enjoyment to meet you Jinx, and I hope that we will encounter one another soon." Saying this he inclined his head toward the ladies and shot Jinx one last dazzling smile before he turned to head back to the castle.

To even describe her as anything but kind was a ruthless exaggeration, for in truth Dania was simply honest. She never even raised her voice, never got angry with anyone, though why she was so quick to pry open the reality in his liking of Jinx was rather strange. Perhaps she was having an off day, perhaps she was uncharacteristically annoyed at Collen's blindness to his true nature. Then again one could not expect everyone to be so intuitive. They dismissed her honesty as being rude and continued to ignore her and the Hufflepuff breathed in, taking comfort in knowing her lungs were filling and emptying without difficulty; that every bone was moving with ease beneath the flesh. Incredible, wasn't it, that they turned their fangs on her? So quick to dismiss her as an 'ice queen' when she had only been trying to warn her housemate. Strange how when you tried to risk your neck for someone it only gets cut by the very person you were trying to aid. Serves her for being honest, didn't it?
Dania parted her lips to offer something, a word or two in reply--protest her innocence and defend her kindness to someone who hadn't even known her long enough to make the very judgement she had laid upon the Gryffindor. Her breath caught in her throat and she slowly pressed them back together, eyes downcast. She almost wished Myles were here, though the moment that thought whirled in her mind she nearly laughed--to prefer a Slytherin's company as opposed to a fellow Hufflepuff was a dangerous statement. Would Jinx condemn her to be no better than them if she knew? She hadn't the right, Dania decided, raising her chin slightly as if softly declaring she wouldn't be felled by the other's naivety. She didn't want her help? Fine.. She wouldn't offer it anymore.
Standing without any regards to explanaton Dania gently shook her head, eyes off in the distance as she abandoned the Hufflepuff to head further into Hogsmeade, rattled and intrigued and altogether unsure of how that could be.
My head is bloody but unbowed.

Within moments, Jinx was left alone in the streets of Hogsmeade--well, aside from the crowds being attacked by gummy worms and chocolate bunnies--but that was fine with her. Lonliness had never been an issue for her, and in fact this sort of alone-ness was her favorite: the perfect mix of friendly departure and absent exit.
While she was sad to see her neww little toy disappear to pretend to do his homework, she was even further aghast to find that her fellow housemate had disappeared without a word. Had she done something wrong by playing games with the little boy? Dania seemed so upset as she left--subtle as it was--it was clear that Dania held some enmity for Jinx, though she could not possibly understand why. She had done all in her power to be friendly to the girl, even offering her a lick off her very own lollipop, but apparently Miss Dahl was one of those girls who just could not stand anyone who had the ability to split their interests between two people.
'Now that makes sense...' Jinx thought, the clouds now clearing away and she could see Dania for what she really was. It's liek they were each other's perfect yin and yang. Jinx outgoing, cheerful, social. Dania, silent, morose, and uncomfortable when she couldn't be one-on-one with a person. Perhaps sometime later Jinx would have the oppurtunity to test this theory and try to befriend the girl again, but until that time, she had some gardening to do...
