Role Player
Tis the Lena
The Character
Name: Jinx Collen. [Sometimes goes by Jinxy, but rarely]
Age: 16
Year: 5th
Blood: Muggleborn
Wand: Hazel wood, nine inches, with a core of centaur hair
Pets: No pets, she uses the school owlery
Patronus: A swarm of bees and butterflies
Boggart: Imbalance. Jinx’s worst nightmare is a world cast into either extreme of everything being evil and chaotic, or everything being pristine and “perfect”. It mortifies her to no extent.
Personality:
Some might consider Jinx a hippie. She’s dramatically calm, overly subdued, intensely passive, though she’s probably closer to a Zen monk than a hippie. She is forever seeking balance in things—not perfection, mind you, but balance. She knows that there is a time and place for everything—joy, depression, anger, elation, peace, war, etc… But she is of the mindset that all should be counterbalanced with one another equally. Never remain angry for too long, lest ye be bitter and resentful forever. Enjoy the things that make you happy, but make sure they don’t consume you and create idleness and selfishness within yourself. She is very unusual in this way, because if there are feuds between houses she tries to calm them, but if there is too much peace within the school she seeks to create havoc. Some might call her unpredictable, inconsistent, or even hypocritical because of how she acts, but she always has a method to her madness, there’s always some underlying plan for her seemingly random acts of charity or violence.
Because of her erratic behavior, not many people can stand to be around Jinx for very long. One second she’s trying to help you mend a friendship with your dorm mate, the next second she’s sending people hate mail in your name. It’s never that she’s backstabbing you or trying to hurt you, in her mind she’s trying to make your life better by bringing balance to it. It’s difficult for most people to remain friends with Jinx for very long because they never know whether she’s going to be nice, or nasty day-by-day, but a few, and a very select few at that, have come to understand the way Jinx’s mind works, and choose to just sit back and watch the show while they tag along on her misadventures in the school. Yes, it can be dangerous being her friend, but when has the fun ever come without a healthy dose of danger?
Appearance:
Jinx is a rather average girl. She stands about five feet, two inches tall, just a little shorter than most of her classmates. She’s slim, not unhealthily skinny, but she keeps pretty active so she’s athletically fit. Like with her personality, the clothes Jinx wears are pretty unpredictable. One day she’ll be wearing skinny jeans, a flashy shirt and stiletto heels, the next day she’ll be dressed in straight up 1900’s garb, corset, boots and all. She doesn’t wear makeup very often, because it takes too much time that could be spent organizing or disorganizing her room, or her friend’s rooms. Her wavy blond hair is usually down, disheveled, and hanging about her shoulders, though she keeps a dozen or so brightly colored hair ties on her wrists like bracelets, in case she has something adventurous to do. When she’s thinking intently about something or she has to do something active her hair goes straight up into a ponytail or bun to keep her hair out of her eyes and off her neck.
Her clear blue eyes are possibly the only way anyone can keep up with her maddening plans. Whenever she’s planning something potentially disastrous they turn a pale, stormy grey-blue. If she’s in a charitable and good-natured mood they brighten up to a soft sky blue. The rest of the time they’re bright robin’s egg blue, though deeply vacant and distracted.
History: Jinx was born to Xavier and Alexis Collen as the middle child of her family, two years younger than her older brother, Max, and two years older than her younger sister, Felixa. Jinx was a typical middle child, overshadowed by her older brother’s academic genius, and always compared to her younger sister’s amazing artistic abilities. While Jinx’s brother was solving advanced mathematical equation and keeping up correspondence with the presidents of several prestigious universities and scientific organizations, Jinx was counting out how many of which colored M&M’s came in every bag. While her sister was creating masterpieces in acrylic, she was rearranging her room so it would be perfectly symmetrical. While her parents tried to encourage her to do better in school, or express herself artistically, she took that to mean, calculate how much black and white paint it would take to cover the entire house in pinstripes.
The whole family was stunned when Jinx got her letter to Hogwarts. Of all people to end up being a witch… Jinxy? The middle child who was obsessed with how much dirt could be on her bathroom mirror, and how much clutter could be under her bed? She was a witch? It was an extremely strange situation, but everyone was happy for her. She wasn’t a brain like her brother or an artist like her sister, she was kind of the black sheep of the family, but this… this one letter from a Headmaster Hubbles: this changed everything. She might actually fit in somewhere! It wasn’t like her family was ashamed of her or anything, they just, sort of… pitied her, that Max and Felixa were so much more talented than she was. She got overshadowed so much, but this… well this evened things out! Which was just fine with equality obsessed Jinx.
