Name: Rian Calhoun Winters
Nicknames: Ri, Winters, Cal
Age: 16
Year: 6th
Birthday: 24 July
House: Gryffindor
Blood: Halfblood
Wand: 12 and ½ inch holly wand with dragon heartstring core.
Patronus: a dragon, a Chinese Fireball
Boggart: His greatest fear is for his family to die while he stands by helpless. Family is all.
Personality: Rian can be a very courteous boy, stepping aside for girls in doorways and holding the door open for them, strictly following a 'ladies first' policy and displaying other such courteous mannerisms. He can be well mannered, allowing others to go before him, not back-chatting those in positions over him and not being rude to elders. However, there is generally more to the situation then just that. With the pretty girl in the doorway, he would start talking to her and try and get a date; allowing others to go before him means he could use the opportunity to his advantage if needs be; and being respectful usually get him in a favourable position with the specific adult.
Still, Rian isn’t the type of person with intent. He doesn’t put much stock in what people own, how well they dress or how big and fancy their house is. Rian is a firm believer that what you own means nothing in the bigger scheme of things, it's what you do and how you act that shows others who you truly are, though he isn't always very proud of how he acts. He likes to think that his occasional courteous moment wins him more points than all his other moments.
He can be very arrogant at times, knowing his smooth talking and charm can get him the favour of any good looking lady and he thinks very highly of himself in general. Those who are truly close to him get some of this as well, in certain respects, because once you’re close to him you get some of his lavish compliments that he spreads around nearly as much as he talks. It's not consciously done though, it just sort of tumbles out of his mouth. Sometimes Rian finds that his mouth talks for him, independent of his brain and that's usually when he speaks the truth when he doesn’t mean to. He's horrid at keeping others secrets and he knows it. Still, he likes to think that he's a good enough friend to some that they would want to confide in him.
Unafraid of most things, large crowds don't scare him so Rian can easily stick his hand up in a class and ask something if he doesn't understand. He's not afraid to look the fool either. He loves to laugh – if not at others at himself at least – and if by tomfoolery so be it, he says. He can be obnoxious and stubborn at times, not knowing when his mouth should or should not continue moving. Mostly he doesn't say anything in particular but just talks for the sake of talking and to hear his own voice. Even so, he is outspoken and willing to volunteer, no matter what it may be. His sister called it blind bravery once and then followed with, “so stupid!” And that's how he can be, blindly willing to head into the dark, especially if no one else will or if a certain someone that he doesn't like is going.
Rian is an easy guy to talk to, his interests ranging from duelling and quidditch to certain books and potion-making so talking to him is generally very easy. He is also not too fussed about where he is or where he is going. His easy, care-free manner adds to his generally social behaviour and friendliness. He likes to be with those he likes but if you give him the slightest reason to dislike you or, more importantly, distrust you that’s it. You’re out. There are no second chances with him ... unless you make some ground-movingly enormous gesture that proves you’re worth being friends with. If you’re out there’s nothing Rian wouldn’t do to spite you. He can brood moodily about things for days but suddenly wake up one day and feel better about life and everything else, then the spite and bitterness will override any other emotion he shows to those who have fallen out of favour with him. He’s not shy about these things, if he doesn’t like you he’ll say so. Straightforward and to the point, Rian doesn’t like to beat around the bush.
With those who are important to him, Rian is very loyal and dependable. If you are in with Rian you can rest assured that should you ever need him at any time of the day he will stand and defend you no matter what.
Appearance: Standing nearly 5’ 10, Rian is lean with a fair amount of muscles but still remains skinny for his height. His posture isn’t the best as his easy manner suggests. He likes to slouch in chairs or on sofas, if he can’t put his feet up somehow. But he always has a confident look on his face, if it isn’t by his cocky smirk, by his quizzical brow and searching gaze.
His dark brown eyes peek up from under thick, dark eyebrows set on either side of his sizable, angular nose. He has full, round lips and an angular jaw that retreats into his taut neck. His thick, straight brown hair is long enough to give him an emo-fringe but he finds that so clichéd and useless so he avoids that as much as possible, exposing his wide forehead.
As much as possible, Rian likes to be casual and this is reflected in his dress-sense. He doesn’t spend much time on it, he doesn’t spend hours agonising over whether or not his top matches his jeans but he likes to look good and yet still comfortable. He likes his jeans and there is a specific blazer he likes to wear and both of those go with everything. Comfortable, always.
History: The third child to Marshal and Ursula Winters, Rian Calhoun Winters was born on July 24, 2088. Their first was Gallaghar Norton Winters, born five years before, and the second was London Neena Winters, Rian’s sister born four years before. This family was close and lived in a small town fifteen minutes outside of Surrey as the broom flies but when Rian was five they moved into Surrey itself.
Since before Rian was born, the Winters had known about magic, owing to Mr Winters being a wizard himself. Apparently even before they had gotten married Marshal had told Ursula about his being magical. The story goes, as they usually do, that at first Sue (as she is called) was very sceptical but over a few months Marshal convinced her it wasn’t such a bad thing and over time she grew to accept and obviously it turned out alright, otherwise neither Gallaghar nor London nor Rian would exist.
Rian was the most spoilt of the three, getting away with nearly everything he did. Obviously his brother and sister noticed but after how strict they had been with Gallaghar these two people had decided to ease up on their children so London had it much easier the Gallaghar and Rian had cake and a thrown to sit in and watch in comparison. When he was four, Rian put his ever-lasting rainbow coloured gobstopper in his sister’s thick locks while she was sleeping. Their parents blamed it on the sugar and London had to have her waist-length hair cut into a Chinese bob. When he was six, Rian found a scorpion ... somewhere and he put it in his brother’s bed. Gallaghar didn’t realise until he was in the bed so thanks to Rian he developed his phobia of scorpions and he, for one, never trusted Rian again.
From this point, Gallaghar pushed Rian away, not giving his little brother the time of day. It helped that Gallaghar was accepted to Hogwarts that year and was gone for most of every year after that. This made Rian try even harder to get his big, tough brother’s attention when he was there so he’d act out even more during holidays. London too got fed up with Rian so when she went to Hogwarts it was a happy time for her too. The way they acted you’d have thought that Rian made their home unliveable. That wasn’t his intention, he just wanted them to spend time with him. Still, when his brother and sister weren’t around Rian found his own ways of keeping himself entertained. He found he made friends very easily and that he could get them to do things for him by either being nice or by being a bully.
There was a girl he met when he was eight that wouldn’t bend to his bullying or flattery and this fascinated him. Rian took it upon himself to try and understand. He spent a lot of time with Jemma and soon the two became sort of friends but there was always something missing. There was also this boy at Rian’s school who he constantly butted heads with, the two just never got on, and soon the two were enemies. Richard was the boy’s name and he was a bully, arbitrarily beating people up and this Rian could not stand. One day, between periods, Rian caught sight of Richard picking on Jemma – his Jemma! Rian, being quick to anger, pushed his way through the crowds and pulled Richard away from Jemma before punching him in the face. The two started fighting and only then Jemma screamed at Rian did he stop.
He looked at her, confused, unsure of what she had just said. She shouted again. “I hate you!” and she went and helped Richard to his feet. Richard shrugged her off and tackled Rian again but teachers descended and pulled them apart. Rian was dazed and confused for the rest of the week. From that point on, Rian was very selective in the people he became close to. Lucky for him though, he was always very good at making what people call casual acquaintances so in his year left at that school he was never lonely and he made sure he never thought about either Jemma or Richard, even if they passed him in the corridor or sat next to him in a class.
Soon, Rian too got a letter from Hogwarts and off he went. With a brother in Hufflepuff and a sister in Ravenclaw, it was a toss-up really about where he would be placed but his father assured him that even if he wasn’t in Gryffindor, like he was, everything would be alright and he would still love him just the same. Rian didn’t mind much, no matter where he was put he would make friends and influence people and that was what life was all about for him. He found the different work very challenging though, more so then London had let on the work would be ... but then again she was very smart and Rian, no so much. He wasn’t stupid by any stretch of the imagination. He worked hard though, when he wasn’t hanging out with his people or exploring.
When it came to rule breaking, Rian found a new and exciting way to get attention and it gave him a thrill so when he lost his house points it wasn’t ever anything new. He wasn’t proud of it but it still got him attention. It was pointed out by one teacher that he lost more house points then he made and how this didn’t endear him to anyone. That was in his second year and from that moment he decided to change. From then on he volunteered for everything, offered suggestions for questions even he was sure he didn’t know the answer. He developed a fearless openness in a classroom that opened him to others around him; from then on he found his friends much truer and likable then before.
In his fifth year, Rian discovered who his true friends really were. With the craziness that was taking hold of Hogwarts and his brother and sister both being gone from the school, Rian was the only Winters to be able to inflict any more chaos on the school. Not that it needed his help really, sucking students into paintings and setting suits of armour loose on students, but Rian one day found himself in a bit of a bind, caught between a clawing witch from a painting and an advancing suit of armour. His three closest friends rescued him and reunited him with his lost wand and from then on they were inseparable. Entering into his sixth year now, Rian foresees a year filled with even more fun and more trials that will not only put his friends through the hoops but test his brawn and bravado as well.
