Ellie rolled over from her back to her side. She pulled the blankets up over her shoulder, but they seemed to be stuck on something. She pulled harder, but when they wouldn't budge, she sat up and looked to see what they were stuck on. Ellie noticed that her head was pounding, and that she couldn't see in the lack of light that was filling the room. Ellie rubbed the sleep out of her eyes and they finally opened enough for her to see.
Ellie smiled when she saw the obstruction. It was Dan. He was sprawled out over the full bed, hugging the blankets to himself. She cuddled back down and laid her head on the pillow. But her eyes wouldn't close. She was awake. Therefore she sat up and looked around the room.
Say, perchance, that in the crazy expanses on the world, their was someone who was writing Dan's life. Let's just called this person "Liz". Ellie imagined that if this "Liz" was to describe Dan's old room, this is what she would say: "Considering Dan is now in his 30’s the bedroom was your typical teenage boy bedroom, left almost as a shrine to the oldest Hubbles child. His wooden framed double bed sat proudly in the middle of the room. The faded green carpet looked like grass while the light blue walls represented a perfect blue sky on a summer’s day. However you would not be able to tell the colour of the walls as it is covered with cuttings from newspapers of Quidditch players and pictures of the family. In one corner there is even a collection of child like drawings on the wall clearly drawn by a young Girty Hubbles. There are also some shelves on the wall full of old books and some dim looking trophies from Dan’s time at Hogwarts. Old Quidditch trophies from his time as Hufflepuff captain and mini joke trophies from the family sport’s day." But that was just Ellie's imagination running wild.
Nevertheless, that basically sumed up what Ellie was seeing in Dan's room. It was nice. Strangely, being in Dan's childhood room made the age difference seem less daunting. Ellie could see anyone her own age having a room similar. But that is when they showed up.
Like a bad cartoon, suddenly emerging from behind her ears, on either side on her head, two little figures. One in white, one in red. The classic angel/devil routine was about to drive Ellie crazy.
"Come on toots...lay back down, cuddle up, give him another run for him money."
"Now, now dear, you can just as easily swing you legs over the bed, grab you clothes, which you managed to take of rather hastily last night I must say."
"Are you kidding me, that is nothing to be ashamed of. It was a work of art how fast they came off."
"Don't listen to him. Just walk down those stairs, out the door, and apparate yourself back to Hogsmeade."
"Or you can apparate yourself under..."
"...Thats the best you can come up with."
Ellie groaned as her head continued to thump. She swung her legs over the bed and her feet touched to cold floor. Ellie crept over to Dan's closet where a lonely button up shirt hung limply on a hanger. Ellie grabbed it and threw it on. It came down almost to her knees. Perfect. Slowly and quietly, so as not to wake Dan, Ellie opened the bedroom door, walked down the stairs, and into the kitchen.
Ellie saw the glass that Dan had started to fill with the water she asked for the night before. She grab it, finished filling it up and took a long, refreshing drink. "Ahh." Ellie said as she finished off the glass. Her head had already stopped stomping and was now just twanging a bit. Ellie filled the glass, and turned to go back up to bed and sleep off the twange. But as she turned she saw a familiar face, and it wasn't Dan Hubbles.
"Morning?" Ellie squeeked.

You would think that if your parents where to go on holiday for a long period of time they would simply put the pet cat in a muggle cattery and be done with it. But no, never the Hubbles family! This family could never do anything sensibly, well at least not in the case of Girty’s mother. So instead of getting a trained professional in to look after Amber Girty had to apparate from Scotland to Lincoln twice a day to feed the bloody cat!
As she gained her bearings after landing Girty looked around at the familiar site of her old street, the hazy gleam around the flickering off street lights, the rows of cars that clung to the pavements and the occasional dog walkers that strolled past, giving Girty a small nod in greeting. Today however Girty was not in the mood for this! The full moon was only a day away and Girty was teetering on the edge, all her senses where ten times greater. She could hear every rustle of the leaves, smell the morning dew and taste the morning bacon cooking. It was like the worst case of PMT ever possible, she was ready to thump something or someone at the slightest opportunity.
As Girty walked up the gravel pathway and towards the yellow front door a ginger shaped ball began to move, it’s bright green eyes latching onto Girty, watching eagerly knowing that with every step dinner grew closer. “Come on then you great fur ball.” Pushing open the front door Girty had to watch her step as the ginger cat dived into the house making a b-line straight for the food bowl. However there was something else that had attracted Girty’s attention…she could smell pheromones in the air, she could taste the sweat, and she could hear someone sighing in the kitchen.
All thoughts of feeding the cat flew out the window and Girty quickly marched down the short hall way and pushed open the door to the kitchen only to see someone standing in just a shirt on the tiled floor. The problem was, the person standing in front of her was not her sister-in-law, heck at this moment in time Girty would have been thankful to have even seen her mother standing in front of her…not Ellie Rook.
“Morning to you too.” Girty’s eyes where as thin as slits as she looked the brown haired girl up and down. “I’m sorry, have I walked into the wrong house or a different reality?” Girty’s arms where flat against her sides, her fists clenched as she tried to suppress the rage that was building up inside of her.
How the hell could Dan do THIS!!!

Ellie stood in utter disbelief. Half of the disbelief was that she had been able to murmur any sort of greeting. The other half was that the glass she was hold was not yet on the floor in a million pieces. But that didn't last very long.
To make the moment more awkward, Ellie lost her grip of the glass, and it fell in slow motion to the ground, shattering and sending water everywhere. It seemed as though Ellie didn't even notice the cup slipping, because she remained standing and starring at Girty.
"Oh, god, shit." Ellie said, coming back down to earth and realizing that she had made a mess. A physical mess now to go along with the other mess that was still sleeping up stairs. "Sorry, sorry." Ellie said, getting done on her hands and knees picking up the glass pieces. This was horrible.
Ellie stopped fussing around with the glass, and looked up to Girty. "I don't know what you want me to say." Ellie said. She truly didn't know what she was supposed to say in this situation. Sorry I slept with your older married brother didn't seem to cut it. In a moment of desperation, jumped into a lie. "It's not what you think it is. I..um..its a long story?"

What is a person to do in a situation like this? You walk into your parent’s kitchen and someone is standing there who shouldn’t be…in your brother shirt. The secret crush that Ellie had on Dan was, well no secret to anyone in the school and so as you can imagine this was one of those moments that Girty had almost always expected would happen had some point…just didn’t expect it to happen in her parents kitchen.
An awkward silence fell between them as the two Hufflepuff’s locked eyes upon each other; it was only the sound of the glass smashing on the ground that broke the silence, however it did not shatter the tension. Girty watched as Ellie bent down and started to faff around with the shards of glass that lay in an ever spreading puddle of water on the kitchen floor. It was then when Ellie looked up at Girty with guilt ridden eyes and spoke and the true Hufflepuff in Girty kicked in as she wanted to believe Ellie, heck for her own sanity she had to believe her.
“A long story hey?” Girty crouched down, pulling her wand from her jacket pocket and started to repair the broken glass. “I am not sure about you but I have all day.” A now complete glass stood proud on the white tiled floor, but the broken glass was not the issue, the issue was the breaking marriage of her brother and sister in law who this girl in front of her seemed to be playing a vital role. Picking up the glass Girty stood up and moved over towards the kitchen counter, placing it down with a dull thud.
“I think maybe we should take a seat in the living room don’t you.” Girty’s voice was calm however it held little emotion and she doubted it would till she heard out Ellie’s story. “Should I go upstairs and get Dan or will it give away the end to your story?”
The image of her brother lying in bed with his and Ellie’s clothes thrown all over the floor flashed into her mind and she did not fancy seeing the real life image. But maybe she was judging Ellie too soon…but knowing her brother she was not mistaken.
Making her way from the kitchen Girty pushed open the door to the living room. It was a small snug room, the sofa’s where big and soft and you know as soon as you sit down you will sink right into them. The old wooden fire was the focal point of the room; the ashes from the last fire still remained and all around on the grand oak mantle were even more photo’s of the family. It was a particular one that caught Girty’s eye, and that was the one of Dan and Dia’s wedding, the two of them smiling happily as they stood side by side on the ‘happiest day of their lives’.
“Sit and explain!” Girty never sounded more like an old stern school Professor then at that moment as she pointed to one of the sofas.

Lucky for Ellie, Girty pulled out her wand and repaired the glass Ellie had so carelessly dropped and broken. It made the younger Hufflepuff feel somewhat better about her situation, that it could be fixed. Anything could be fixed with a little wave of your wand. However, Ellie had a sinking feeling which told her that this wasn't going to be that easy, or painless.
Ellie couldn't help but hang her head slightly. Girty was going all out mother-sister-teacher-authority figure on Ellie. "I think he's still sleeping." Ellie said, not really giving Girty a real answer to her question. In all honesty, Ellie didn't want Dan to ever know that Girty had been there, that she had seen what she saw. Ellie prayed that she could say or do something that would keep it between the two Hufflepuff girls, not even have to get Dan involved. It was a fantasy. Ellie knew that any moment he would wake up on his own and walk down the stairs and find Girty and Ellie sitting in the living room. It would not look like a happy tea-drinking social call. No. It would look like Girty mad as a marmoset and Ellie shamed into silence.
Ellie stood up and was ushered into the living room. She looked at the comfortable surroundings. It had the air of the happiness that seemed to emit from the Hubbles clan. Ellie could picture a large fire and family on the couch, reading a book, playing a game, listening to the radio. Ellie quickly searched the faces of the pictures on the mantel, but the second she caught a glimpse of Dia's bright smile, Ellie's eyes retreated to the floorboards.
Ellie immediately sat down at Girty's command. Ellie's eyes did not leave the floor. She could feel Girty's eyes on her, but she didn't want to look up and meet them. Where should Ellie start. Should she tell Girty that Dan had found her at the bar, a lonely Ellie? Should Ellie tell Girty that she had been stood up by a younger version of her brother that Ellie wasn't exactly sure wasn't her imagination and she wasn't being driven crazy? Should Ellie tell Girty how afraid she was of leaving Hogwarts, and how Dan seemed like the only person who wanted her to stay, who cared enough to say it?
Ellie's mind ran through the night. There was more than enough to make Girty feel bad for Ellie, for Ellie to play the victim, but there was something holding Ellie back. It was that moment that Ellie realized that she didn't feel bad for what she did, she just felt bad that she got caught. She would never play the victim card if she could help it. It wasn't Ellie. It wasn't the sweet, caring, loving Hufflepuff. What was she turning into?
When Ellie finally spoke, she looked up at Girty, and did the right thing. She took the fall. "I was feeling sorry for myself, so I contrived all this. Dan just got in the middle of it. It wasn't his fault, it was mine."

Girty did not know what she expected Ellie to say, whether it would be some wicked tale she created to explain the reason why she was here or even a play by play of what truly happened. Except Ellie broke down and gave a short apology for her actions…not what she had expected. The brutal honesty of her apology made Girty actually take a step backwards; she felt like she had taken a punch to the stomach and the air had been knocked right out of her. “Oh.” Girty nervously rubbed the back of her neck, feeling almost embarrassed now for asking such a question.
“Oh.” Girty sat down on the arm of the sofa, her head in her hands as the reality of it all dawned on her. She felt like she was now the accomplice to a crime and she could not get out of it. “Oh Ellie, why? Why did you fall for it?” Girty looked over at the other Hufflepuff with pleading eyes in the hope of getting some sort of answer but it would never undo what had happened. “He’s a married man!” Girty stood up and once again looked over at the photo’s on the mantel piece to the picture of Dan and Dia. “I am going to kill him! I am honestly going to kill him!”
Standing up Girty stormed out of the living room, ran up the stairs and kicked open Dan’s bedroom door. The room was just how she pictured it, the clothes over the floor, the dim light coming through the window and Dan lying in the middle of the bed fast asleep. “You dick!” Girty pulled out her wand and pointed it right at Dan. “Aguamenti”
A jet of water shot from the end of Girty’s wand and hit Dan square in the face and the loud yelp that her older brother let out proved that it had worked. Flicking her wand down to her side the jet of water stopped and the two Hubbles siblings stared at each other, breathing heavily with their eyes locked upon one another. “What the hell Girt!” “I can say the same flipping thing back to you!” “I was asleep!” “In your old bed?” “Yeah!” “With a 7th year Hufflepuff down stairs wearing your old shirt?”
That stumped Dan; Girty could see the small frown crease his forehead as his mind whirled trying to think of some sort of reason for Ellie being there. Slowly he opened his mouth in an attempt to give an excuse but Girty was at the ready to stop any lies coming from his mouth. “Well you see…” Girty raised her wand and yet another jet of water hit her older brother in the face.
“I know you slept with her Dan!” Girty could feel her pulse quickening as her anger levels increased. “You are an idiot! I am going to kill you!” Girty did not lower her wand, in fact she was trying to think of the best curse she could throw at Dan that would not result in her being thrown into Azkaban…heck maybe she would just go on the run!

Ellie was speechless at Girty's reaction. Had it seriously worked, had Ellie successfully taken the blame off Dan? No. Ellie knew better. She had to continuously tell herself, "Don't cry. Do not cry. Cry, No!" She bit her lip trying to hold it all back, but before the first tear would fall, Girty rushed upstairs. Kill him? "Damn" Ellie said stunned. Then she realized she should probably go after Girty so that she didn't kill Dan, Ellie wholeheartedly believed that she was capable of it.
As Ellie reached the stairs she heard a splash of water hitting the floor and yelp from Dan. Ellie stopped rushing. The two Hubbles yelled at each other. Ellie didn't know if she should show her face. It was the perfect opportunity to just run. She could see the door. It looked like heaven. Ellie took a step down the stairs but with a groan she switched her footing and heading up to Dan's childhood bedroom.
"Girty! Stop!" Ellie said as she reached the door. She would much rather Girty turn and hex her into oblivion. That's how Ellie felt anyway, like she was blown away to oblivion. Ellie didn't know what to say next. Dan was lying in bed, wet from his wake up call, Girty posed over him ready to strike. It was way to much. "Girty, please, you are not making this any better." Ellie said. It was a bold statement for her to say in her position, but it was true. Killing Dan wasn't going to make everything better.
Ellie looked down at the floor and saw her clothes. She picked them up and looked at the two Hubbles. "Don't...gah, just don't kill him." Ellie said before going to the bathroom to change back into the dress she had worn the previous night. She braided her hair in a long braid to the side to calm the waves. She looked in the mirror and saw that she had started to silently cry. She wiped away the tears and smudged the black eyeliner back into place. She took a deep breathe and walked back toward Dan's room.
"I guess I should leave then..." Ellie said, not knowing what to do.

This was not how Girty had planned things to turn out this morning; she thought a simple five minute trip to feed the cat and she would be back at the castle for breakfast…she should have known things would never go to plan, not on a full moon anyway.
The two Hubbles continued to bicker and argue, Girty’s wand remained fixed upon her brother throughout the argument. It was reminiscent of arguments that always seemed to have growing up, Girty always sticking up for his brother girlfriends while he tried to nervously explain why he had cheated on them. No doubt they could have continued on like that all day, but the sound of Ellie’s voice snapped them both out of their red little world.
“No!” Girty yelled, turning around, looking right at the Ellie who was standing awkwardly in the door way. “You need to stay here till this is sorted out.” How this was going to be sorted out she did not know, all she knew was that it needed to be. Running her hand through her hair Girty let out a loud groan before dropping her wand down to her side.
“I am going downstairs to feed the cat. I expect both of you downstairs in the living room in 5 minutes to get a cover story planned out.”
With that Girty barged past Ellie and ran down the stairs, all she wanted to do was to take a large chuck out a red raw steak…maybe her parents had some in the fridge?

It was not the first time Dan had woken up to find someone pointing a wand in his face, heck it was not the first time he had woken up to find Girty pointing one at him, but this time…well this time he knew he had done something seriously wrong. In his imagination he had dreamed of waking up with Ellie still lying next to him, them laughing over a light breakfast, maybe even doing a second, sober run of the events of the night before. He never would have imagined this!
He felt the cold water running down his back over his bare skin, in fact had it not been for the heated argument with Girty he was sure he would be shivering. Thankfully however Girty and her wand stormed out of the room leaving an awkward silence to fill the space between him and Ellie. Despite all his experience of one night stands nothing would be able to prepare Dan for moments like this, heck feelings where never normally included and despite how wrong it was despite their situation Dan had some sort of fluttering inside that only normally Dia could conjure.
“Ellie…I…” Dan looked down, he was sitting there butt naked in soaking wet sheets. “I want you to understand that. I…I…” Dan went to stand up before realising that maybe in the day light Ellie would not want to see her 30 something professor standing there naked in front of her. Quickly fumbling around Dan quickly gathered up the sheet and wrapped it around his waist. His cheeks turned a crimson red as he could no longer bring himself to look Ellie in the eyes. “I didn’t want it to end like this.”
He slowly walked over to Ellie, seeing her in that dress again made all the emotions of the night before come flooding back, their kiss on the beach…how he was so desperate to rip it off her. He was going to have to cool his loins and remember the fact his sister was downstairs feeding the cat. Reaching out Dan gently took hold of Ellie’s hand and pulled her close in towards him, the feeling of her warm body against his bright chest sent a shiver up his spine and as he breathed her in he could not help himself, leaning closely in Dan kissed Ellie gently on the lips.
“I wish things where different.” He muttered, resting his head against Ellie’s.

Ellie was honestly scared of Girty. She seemed so intense as she stormed out of the room and down the stairs. Ellie sighed and looked at Dan, still sitting in bed. She stepped in toward the bed and smiled gently at her headmaster. Ellie did not even notice the lack of clothing, but obviously Dan did. He covered himself and stood before her unable to look at her.
End like this? How did he think it was going to end? What did he think was going to happen? What was she thinking? He was married, it was never going to be anything. It was a silly little girls dream. Ellie had woken up. She could see how silly she had been with her hopes and dreams, her wishes and wants. Everything that she seemed to have want was wrong. The sad part, Ellie thought, was that Dan hadn't figured this out yet, and she wasn't sure that he ever would.
Ellie watched as Dan grew closer to her. As he leaned in, Ellie couldn't help but reciprocate the kiss. She smiled as they parted. It was a sad smile. "This was always going to happen. Eventually." Ellie said in return.
She turned and sat on the bed, pulling her heels on. "Here's what we are going to do." Ellie said, taking the situation into her own hands. "We need to tell Girty the truth. She knows already, and I feel like she might kill me. Then we never talk about this again. We don't see each other alone, you go back to your wife, tell her a story about how you passed out in a ditch or something, but life just goes on." Ellie said. She couldn't look up at Dan. "How do we get Girty to not tell?"
Ellie's heart was breaking as she spoke. The words came out harsh and business like, but it was all she could do to keep it together and not breaking down, rushing into Dan's arms and melting away. She needed to be brave and strong. She had to do it for Dan. He would lose everything. Dia. Hogwarts. His sanity. Ellie had to walk away for their own good.

As Dan sat on the edge of the bed he could not help but hang his head in shame, how could it be that this eighteen year old had more common sense then he did at the grand old age of thirty two? Ellie was right, of course she was right. There would be no point even trying to continue with this as there were so many things that were wrong about it! Maybe that was why Dan wanted it so much? She was beautiful and forbidden…the perfect combination. He would have to treasure that last kiss knowing it should not happen again and he would have to try his hardest to make sure I didn’t happen again.
Dan listened in silence as Ellie explained what they were going to do and could not help but smirk when she mentioned about him ending up in a ditch. “It would not be the first time.” Dan muttered thinking about the times he truly had…and also the times he used that excuse to cover up his past digressions. Reaching out he gave Ellie’s hand a small comforting squeeze, he could tell how shaken she was, yet she was taking this like a seasoned pro.
“Girty won’t tell.” Dan said slowly. “She knows about every woman I have slept with, even the ones while I have been married to Dia.” Dan could feel his mouth go dry as the realisation of how much of a scum bag he was set in. “She acts like this every time and is cool with it. Anyway it’s a full moon tonight, she won’t even remember today.”
It was a poor reason, but it made Dan feel that little bit better. Denial was an amazing thing! Slowly letting go of Ellie’s hand Dan rearranged the sheets that were covering him and moved off the bed, gingerly picking up items of clothing that he had lost in a hurry the previous evening.
“Do you want to go?” It was a bit of advice as well as question. “I can deal with Girt if you want to head back to the castle. Her bark is worse then her bite…well maybe not literally but you know…”
He was now rambling, a sure sign that Dan had moved through all the emotions possible within the space of half an hour. Slowly slipping on his boxer shorts Dan leaned against the wardrobe and looked at the back of the Hufflepuff. “You will have to make your mind up quick before Girty comes back upstairs to round us up.”

Ellie wasn't sure she knew how to take the news that Girty had dealt with this type of situation before. Ellie couldn't imagine putting her sister, if she had one, through something like this once. Again, it made Ellie feel bad for getting caught. Apparently, Dan wasn't very subtle about his affairs, and Ellie thought she would never understand why.
Looking at the big picture sober, there was something about what Dan had done that she felt like just wasn't fair. It wasn't fair to Dia. From all that Ellie had heard, Dia was the perfect wife. She was beautiful, sweet, charming, smart, but all definitions Dan's dream. Why would Dan ever want to put what he had in jeopardy. Secondly, it wasn't fair to Girty. Every time she had to lie, or push a secret deep down inside her, Ellie imagined that it create a new layer or hurt emotion, of distrust, of pure annoyance. Thirdly, it was fair to Ellie. Ellie now realized that all the wonderful things they had talked about the night before were pure fantasy. Maybe not unreachable, but unreachable by Dan and Ellie together. Ellie was simply to young to fall into a trap like this. It could only lead to heart ache and hurt when real life stepped in, as Girty had stepped in the door. Lastly, Dan wasn't being fair to himself. He was living a life that he knew would make him unhappy. At the age of thirty he could not keep up his playboy persona while juggling the Headmaster potion. It just didn't seem right.
However, despite all this unfairness, Ellie realized that hiding the truth would be so much better. It wasn't worth the dirty looks in the hall, Dan losing his job and wife, and Ellie's complete dignity. So that was the plan, and Ellie was glad Dan was on board. She nodded her head. Full moon. Made sense why Girty was a little intense. Ellie sighed.
"No, I'll stay. This is my problem too." Ellie said, in the name of fairness once again. "Lets go." Ellie said, getting up and walking out of the room slowly, letting her feet sink into the heels once more. She left the room, but not without a glance back at Dan. She flashed a reassuring smile and turned out the door and headed down to the living room.
"Girty?" Ellie said, fearing that Girty may jump out and maul her if she wasn't careful. "I'm sorry." She finally said to the former Hufflepuff. Without Dan in the room, she wanted a minute to speak her mind to Girty. "I just want you to know that I truly appreciate your discretion. And that I hope that you will not think less of me, I just got caught up. It happens. Apparently a lot for Dan." Ellie said, raising her eyes to meet Girty's. "I feel like I'm going to apologize to you for the rest of my life, so I hope you won't get annoyed by it." Ellie tried to smile, but it failed.

Girty was sat on the sofa, her arms folded tightly across her chest and her right foot was tapping quickly on the floor. Much to her annoyance their was no raw meat in the fridge and she would now have to wait till this whole fiasco was sorted before she could get back to Hogwarts and get a lovely 5oz steak from the house elves in the kitchen. It was the slowly clip clopping noise of Ellie’s heels coming down the stairs that awoke Girty from her steak dreams and right away before Girty could even look around Ellie had started talking.
The Hufflepuff has been all riled up and ready to unleash her full furry on Ellie, accusing her of being a fool and San of being an even bigger one but somehow she couldn’t manage it. Not now Ellie had said all that, and at the drop of a hat (as is typical for this time of the moon cycle) Girty’s mood took a rather quick and sudden change in direction and pity filled her.
“You don’t need to apologise for the rest of your life.” Girty stood up and sheepishly walked over to were Ellie was standing. “Maybe just the next 20 years.” A small smile tugged at the corner of Girty’s mouth. “I am truly sorry you got caught up in this mess Ellie, you’re a lovely girl and I think could get any guy in the school if you wanted.” Girty didn’t think that…she knew it!
Girty now wondered over the mantel piece and picked up a picture of Dan and Dia on their wedding day. She looked down at their smiling faces and couldn’t help but let out a small sigh. “There is a women who chooses to be ignorant out of love and for some reason has stood by my brother when we all know he will never change. You need to find someone who will not treat you like my pig headed, arrogant brother has treated Dia. You deserve so much better then this.”
It came from the heart and as Girty slowly replaced the picture she turned around to Ellie and gave her a small reassuring smile.
“I will keep silent, as I know will you, just please, get over Dan. See him as the idiot he is and move on with your life. I mean…” Girty stumbled as she didn’t know if it was her place to say. “…well that Harrison guy seems to like you. Why not give it a try with him?”
