ETHELDREDA
CARELESS
CARELESS
Name: Etheldreda Careless
Nicknames: Ethel, Dreda
Age: Sixteen
Year: Sixth
House:
Blood: Half-blood
Wand: Eleven inches and carved from hazel, the wood of dousing and divination.
It is a particularly beautiful piece, tattooed astral silver and containing a core of augury feather,
a sorrowful looking bird known for its power to foretell death and rain.
Patronus: Grey seal
Boggart: (Undecided)
Personality:
On first impressions Ethel can seem unapproachable, her glacial edge quite repellent to those who are not used to her. However, it is soon evident this attitude is but a mask veiling a much warmer aura – she is not intentionally abrasive, merely self-conscious with her age, and when allowing herself to let go and feel instead of think, Ethel is genuinely a luminous, fascinating person.
She is fond of others like herself and the vastness of their ideas, drawn by those who think beyond the orbit of convention. They seem to remove the limits Ethel sets for herself, coaxing her from reluctance and into that elusive grey area of life. In this respect she is a Ravenclaw, perhaps the only thing that makes her so – but there is another factor. Whatever interesting quirks she may have to set her apart from her given House, they are all overshadowed by an inexplicable talent for 'knowing' things before they happen. Ethel brushes these unnerving occurrences off as coincidence, but even she fails to swallow her own indifference.
This eerie intuition would not haunt her so badly if not for one issue – her family, much to her discomfort, having a history of Seers. Ethel fiercely rejects the notion of Seeing, finding it fraudulent and self-involved at best. The idea of inheriting her grandfather’s mysterious (and frankly ludicrous) gift is almost an embarrassment to Ethel, yet she cannot voice her feelings loud enough to overcome her zealous family: you are a Seer, and you will not be permitted to escape it.
Consequently, Ethel questions her role as a Ravenclaw. Though having grown to harbour the traits of the thoughtful House, Ethel is sure she would have turned out differently if given the benefit of the doubt and placed elsewhere. To her, she is a Ravenclaw merely by lack of a better definition, and along with the forced-inheritance of Seeing – something she refuses to believe in – Ethel is eager to shake off the labels imposed upon her.
Appearance:
Like her grandfather, Ethel possesses an ethereal, dream-like quality to her features – something she insists is not true, regardless of a certain cloudiness people suggest about her. Her rejection of her family’s prophetic superstitions has left her with what can be misconstrued as a rather sceptical glare, observing everything with frosty mistrust before allowing herself to accept it. This guardedness deprives Ethel of her delicacy, but whatever haughtiness she may exude is purely an act – in her most natural expression she is free feeling and exuberant, only occasionally lapsing into the spacey mysticism she so vehemently denies.
