The sun was just rising over the mountains that surrounded the wizard village in Scotland. It wasn’t rising warm, per se, the weather was in fact still quite fowl. But still, it did enough to scare the chill from the air … or would, given time. As the sparrow hawk with her smooth and sleek feathers sat on the turret of a shop in the village she watched the people that walked down below, the village already buzzing with activity. It was just another day in January and nothing seemed out of the ordinary.
It wasn’t every day though that a silky sparrow hawk was seen in these parts and any who knew anything would know this. Luckily for the hawk hardly anyone knew anything about anything, plus the few that did know something knew that this hawk was too precious to do anything about. It had once or twice on flights that some had tried to shoot her down and while it had disturbed her that people could actually do such a thing nothing had come of it. She must have been a lucky lady.
Yes, this hawk was a lady when she was at home. A young entrepreneur. A Quidditch Player. A surrogate daughter and to a number a sister too. Grace Marks had been around, it was clear, and only just into her twenties too. She knew that her mother, where ever she was, would be proud of her little girl. Grace thought of her often as she soared the skies and about how much she’d have loved to see it too. Achieving all she had in her life so far would have brought an enormous smile to her mother’s face and Grace knew it. She didn’t think about her father as much any more …
Still, as the young hawk was perched on the roof top down the street from her own store, Grace watched with keen eyes as people went from one place to another, not even noticing her. But then someone did. That someone had been strolling blissfully unaware of Grace’s presence but then stopped. Grace instantly took wing, spreading her feathered appendages and heaved into the air with … grace! She circled around for a few moments, seeing if the someone was indeed watching her, which it turned out to be so.
The sparrow hawk gave a cry before lunging suddenly downwards towards a small alley. Once there she quickly transformed back into herself and ran into the street, her blond hair all in shambles. She didn’t care how she looked though. “Girty!” she called frantically, turning sharply on her heal. “Girty!” And there she was. Grace ran at almost full speed towards Girty. She stopped just in time so she was standing in front of her. “Hi,” she breathed. She could take it no longer. She threw her arms around Girty’s neck and hugged her dear dear friend tightly. “It’s so good to see you.”
