THE STYLE
Ash's style would best be described as 'Emo'. Black or dark blue/grey skinny jeans, small, dark, tight t-shirts, hoodies, and tennis shoes (either Vans or Converse). Ash knows his style is unconventional but he could care less. His style is his own and in his oppinion, it's no one's business what he wears.
THE PERSONALITY
Ash's personality depends on who he is with. When he is with his friends and twin sister Delaney he is open, talkative, fun-loving, the center of attention. When he is around people he does not know or like very well, he is quiet, reserved, and often comes across as cold and aloof. In both scenarios however, he does not let anyone push him around. He doesn't like to fight, but provoke him and he will come right back at you.
Ash can also be extremely sarcastic and can sometimes have a harsh, biting tongue. This is usually only when he's irritated though. Oh, and when he just wants to cause trouble.
Being a former Ravenclaw, Ash is also very witty and of course smart. He tends to have more street-smarts, than book-smarts though. Of course seeing as many times as he's run away from home (and been found, dragged back, and beaten to within an inch of his life), it's not really all that surprising. Ash can toss out insults and biting remarks without even thinking about what to say and can have a Battle of Wits with the best of them.
He does not always use his sarcasm though, and he doesn't always insult people. In fact, since becoming a teacher, he's mellowed out quite a bit. Of course, he's kind of had to. He can't exactly go around insulting students. Well, he could... if he were like a certain Severus Snape. But he's not, so he won't
THE HISTORY
Ashton Jade Laurent was born Ashton Jade McLane to Daniel and Celine McLane. Five minutes later, his twin sister Delaney, or just Laney to Ash, came along. Celine however, died soon after giving birth and Daniel for some twisted reason, blamed the twins. Ashton moreso. He did not however, reveal his hatred of his son until the twin's fifth birthday. Up until then, Daniel was a loving, doting father. Soon after their fifth birthday however, his true colors were revealed. He yelled often at the little boy and Ashton suddenly found himself getting more and more spankings and time-outs.
Delaney was blamed as well but she was not treated as badly as Ash. Of course that was probably because he protected her so much. Whenever Daniel would even take a threatening step towards her or yell at her, Ash would get in between them and of course he was "punished". Laney's never said anything about it but Ash suspects that she was belittled and maybe even beaten a bit when Ash would be out of the house.
The twins tried frequently to run away, but unfortunately they were always caught by men that their father hired to find them and dragged back home. Ash of course took Laney's beating for her, while she was merely locked in her room for a few days.
As Ash grew older, the abuse grew worse. By the time he was sixteen, Ash had had a broken wrist, a broken arm, a broken collarbone and multiple scars and bruises all courtesy of his father. During the summer's Daniel would give Ash a long list of chores to complete and not finishing a chore in the time allotted, or not doing it to Daniel's liking of course earned Ash a beating.
The two worst punishments though, were The Belt, and The Closet. The Belt was of course, a belt. Thick, black leather, with sharp metal studs. Let's just say... Ash isn't too fond of belts now. The Closet couldn't even be called a closet. More like a tall, narrow hole in the wall that Daniel would lock him in when he felt like it. From this comes Ash's claustrophobia.
When Ash was 16 he was legally emancipated and changed his last name to that of his mother's maiden name. Laurent. McLane was his "father's" name. And he wanted nothing to do with that man. It was at this age that he also became head of the Laurent household. Or Lord if you prefer the traditional term. He moved out of his father's tiny little house, and into the large, and grand Laurent Château. His ancestral home. As Lord Laurent it his duty to make sure the family name is never soiled, to make sure they have money, and of course that they are happy.
BEING AN APPRENTICE
Ash is now 20 years old and the Defense Against The Dark Arts teacher When he was 19 he was the Flying coach for a little while before having a talk with the Headmaster Daniel Hubbles. Both men agreed that the young teacher was better suited for Defense, and thus his new position. As DADA teacher, he is of course responsible for teaching the students of Hogwarts how to defend themselves against the darker side of magic. Ash does not however, see all dark magic as evil. In fact, he believes in balance. To him, one cannot have light without also having darkness. Seeing as Ash is only 20, many of the students are former classmates and even friends. He will not however, let that keep him from having a professional attitude in class. He will not tolerate disrespect, back-talking, or bickering of any kind in his classroom and will not hesitate to punish rule-breakers, even if they are his own friends. That's not to say that he takes pleasure in discipline of course. He'd much rather have a fun, enjoyable lesson without having to get on to anyone. But, as he has learned from observation, wanting something is sometimes easier than getting it.
