Flames licked at his heals as Valunce stumbled backwards barely keeping his rump from the charred ground behind. Feverishly he skittered backwards as the unnaturally quick flames sped towards him despoiling all in its path. Mind working quickly Valunce strung and randomly fired his bow off, hoping the stars were with him.
They were.
The flames abruptly stopped as concentration was snapped. Eyes narrowing Valunce selected another arrow, notched then peered about the forest. Everywhere from whence he had came was destroyed the flames having burnt anything in its path to a cinder within seconds. Then from behind the charred ruins of a once proud tree a shadow moved, Valunce fired then skipped to one side as a bolt of sizzling energy from a wand flew his way. Stringing another arrow Valunce backed away firing mercilessly towards his assailant, but his attacker was wily simply deflected the arrows with a wave of their wand.
Knowing nearly all pathways throughout the forest, Valunce's instincts took over as he moved swiftly ever backwards. He headed for a thicker part of the forest where trees nearly interwined together to stop light shining down, and darted behind a tree into a prickly bush that none would think him capable of entering. With bated breath he listened to the approaching footsteps, he saw the cowl of a cloak pass and waited patiently hardly daring to believe the wizard would pass on by. Waiting a few minutes Valunce sized up his few options, fleeing towards his tribe would simply lead the monster their way and bring more death and destruction, perhaps leading it to the humans at the castle could work; they may know how to defeat it. But then he remembered they were children and he couldn't be so cruel, deciding he'd lead the man on a wild goose chase he stepped out into pitch blackness as a well aimed spell smashed into his chest leaving him bedraggeled in the bush.
Darkness consumed him for a long time, his life passed before his eyes at a rapid pace, he strived against it, clutching at the most precious straws of his memory, but then true blackness of fitfull sleep took over. Whoever it was had the information they required...
Some time later Valunce was awoken by sounds of approaching footfall and he gradually came out of his dazed reverie, where could he run? Holding himself ready to flee his sharp eyes fixed upon the approaching figure...
