The Character
Name: Joshua Rivas
Nicknames (if any): Riv, Rivs
Age & Year: 16, Sixth Year
Blood: Pure
Wand: 12 inches, white ash with pheonix feather core. Almost perfectly white, it's length is slashed with very light veins of gold. Quite powerful, particularly when used in curses or charms.
Patronus: An alpha-male wolf, which is the size of a large pony. One of the stronger patroni produced by a Hogwarts student.
Classes: Charms, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Herbology, History of Magic, Occlumency, Potions and Transfiguration.
Personality: Without mincing words, Joshua is rebellious, self-absorbed and manipulative. He has displayed cruelty and cunning on many occasions, fairly or unjustly using others to his own ends. Despite this, few would call him a bad person. He also has a good sense of humour, and those who are counted among his friends find a fierce and loyal companion.
Often seen as ‘one of those popular guys’, he has many friends as well as enemies. Always ready with a witty joke or a laugh, Joshua is also considered something of a prankster. He has no prejudice against squibs or muddle-borns as a result of his own muggle brother. He believes in a united world of muggles and wizards, both helping each other, and he hopes his burning ambition and magical skill will allow him to bring about this vision.
Extremely intelligent, Joshua can read a person and understand exactly who they are within minutes of meeting them. This is perhaps the reason he can manipulate others as easily as he can. Despite his sharp mind, Joshua does not spend hours reading textbooks. His is an intelligence that allows him to excel at almost everything that he sets his mind to, something enhanced by his natural talent with magic. In the areas that interest him, Joshua will strive to understand every aspect. One such favourite subject is Defence against the Dark Arts and extremely talented with such practical magics.
Joshua can usually talk his way out of any situation, but failing that he is a fan of fistfights and wand duels. This aggressiveness is perhaps part of his Irish heritage, and has gotten him into trouble more than once over the years. Despite his flaws, Joshua is a good person. He is never unkind to those he does not know, though he shows unbounded cruelty to his enemies. He is ready to accept any person as a friend and considers loyalty as extremely important. While he occasionally uses people around him to his own ends, these ends often end up benefiting the manipulated. So to Joshua, the benefits outweigh the moral dilemma.
Appearance: Joshua is very attractive, with a lean muscular body and slanted shoulders. Fierce green eyes are flecked with a softer gold that causes girls to drool with a single piercing look. He walks with a swagger and his winning smile tends to drop girls to their knees. He's good looking and he knows it, which only serves to make him more attractive. When not wearing school robes, he tends to don popular muggle clothing.
History: Born the second son of Dirk and Eleanor Rivas, Joshua was something of the favourite child. His older brother Shane was a squib, something of a shock in a pureblood family with links to old nobility. Despite this, Shane had a good nature and decided to excel at a muggle profession rather than struggle with a wizarding life.
Joshua was spoilt from an early age, his parents happy to have a wizard son and his brother simply ecstatic for a sibling. He was loved from all sides and quickly grew to adore being adored. During his early years he bonded strongly with his family, being closer than most families are. His father, an intelligent and practical man who worked for the Ministry, basked in his son's growing mind. His mother, a noted Auror, watched with joy as Joshua exhibited signs of talent and powerful magic. His brother Shane loved him for what he was not, and for the traits they shared together. Shane never begrudged his brother for their differences, but rather relished in them.
At eleven, as all wizards do, Joshua came to Hogwarts. He was quickly noted as extremely intelligent, willful and a powerful talent. He was also discovered to be rebellious, manipulative and fiercely determined to reach his goals.
Throughout the next few years his days at Hogwarts were interesting, if not entirely unique. He has secretly catalogued several many secret passages and hallways. He has excelled at most subjects, if lacking in less magical classes such as herbology and care of magical creatures. Joshua has shown extraordinary aptitude with charms and curses, a natural magic talent that sets him apart from others.
He has grown determined to become an Auror, though he does not mind using the Dark Arts, much like his mother. He even knows a few partciularly nasty spells, though he rarely has chance to practise such. He has grown to hope that through dark means, he can help achieve a bright future. For many years the Ministry have held a close eye on his progress and they believe him capable of becoming an extremely powerful wizard and Auror. What they don't know is that his loyalties lie only with himself...

Joshua Rivas stood, his robes billowing backwards with the wind. The cold gust hit him in the face and stole the breath from his lungs with it's cold grasp. Just another winter day in the grounds of Hogwarts.
Perhaps not entirely just another day. Standing opposite, wand at the ready, was a Gryffindor boy who had thought it funny to trip Rivas up as he walked past. The resulting punch had caused Joshua to endure several afternoons of detention and now the Gryffindor thought it fitting to duel. If they were caught, it would mean over a month's detention, but there was no way Joshua was backing down from a fight. He gave his opponent something between a snarl and a grin that was somehow deeply insulting, a special gift inherited from his mother.
The curse came out of nowhere, flying towards Joshua with locomotive speed. His own charm rose to meet it, saving him without a moment to spare.
"Damn, he's fast." Rivas said, then smirked. He was faster.
His ash wand whipped forward and red light exploded from the tip, fast as lightning and hurled the Gryffindor off his feet and into the ground. "Not fast enough."
