Girty had not been able to eat much at tea that night, she knew that she was hungry but after only a few mouthfuls she was starting to feel sick but not out of being full, she was nervous. The message had already been sent and she was too met with Simon at half seven in The Three Broomsticks, the place where everything started and the place where it was going to end. The time had come to tell Simon that she wanted to be with Alex, but as the time drew closer her confidence wavered and the belief she could actually pull this off was slowly disappearing.
The walk into Hogsmeade seemed to take longer then normal as the worst case situations kept running through her head. The look on Simons face, the questioning looks on the people around them as the couple start yelling at each other, the drawing of wands and a green flash then nothing…. Girty knew Simon would never actually kill her, she doubted he could kill anyone but this was Girty Hubbles imagination and things had a habit of being blown out of proportion.
Pushing open the door to the Three Broomsticks Girty looked around and noticed that Simon was not there yet. She saw this as a blessing as it would give her time to buy the first round of drinks and collect her thoughts in silence while waiting. And this is just what she did, she brought there usual drinks and sat down at their normal table in the corner by the fire and she waited.

It was when an owl flew into the clearing of the forest where the rouges were based that Simon first had doubts. The letter itself did not sound…well it did not sound like Girty. The tone was all wrong, her letters normally continued jokes and she would tease him but this seemed far too formal and her writing was all over the place. She had scribbled out sentences at a time, rewrote the same word over and over and her spelling…well it was never the best normally but she even miss spelt her own name.
So it was with a heart full of worry that Simon made his way through the forest and down the dirt track to the small wizarding village. It was beautiful summers evening, the birds were singing, the sun was warm and there was not a cloud in the sky but still Simon could not smile. He was worried about Girty and was keen to see what she had to say. They had only seen each other yesterday and every thing seemed fine, although Girty was less keen to hold hands while walking down the street and she only kissed him twice but he guessed that was just because a full moon was approaching.
Pushing open the door to the pub his eyes immediately fell onto the Hufflepuff sitting at their table with two drinks already waiting, she had already drunk half of hers while the other was untouched. With a small smile Simon walked over towards Girty giving a nervous glace around to double check there were no ministry officials in sight.
“I hope that drink is mine and you have not double booked me with your bit on the side.”
Simon gave a soft chuckle, but noticed that Girty was not laughing at the joke, in fact she looked quite put off by it and only managed a nervous laugh. Simon tried to over look that point and before he sat down he leaned over and tried to give Girty a quick kiss only for her to flinch and it end up being a peck on the cheek. Something was not right.
“So Girty…why have you dragged me away from the forest?”

When Simon entered the pub Girty’s heart stopped, he was smiling at her but it was not the normally cheeky grin and she could not help but feel he knew that something was up. Things were only made worse when he made a joke about the other drink sitting on the table, her stomach had tied itself into a million knots and after only managing to summon a nervous laugh and avoiding his kiss Girty reached out and downed the rest of her drink in one. She winched as the alcohol burnt her throat and her eyes watered from the strong kick but it seemed to have clamed her nerves for a moment.
It was the frown that was spreading across Simons face and the mono tone of his question that did not improve the feeling of guilt that was building up inside of her. The problem was that she still cared about Simon, just not as much as she did for Alex. When she was with Simon Girty felt like she was with any of her other friends but with Alex, he was her best friend and he made her feel warm inside.
“I did not drag you here….dragging requires physical contact and you walked here on your own free will…I merely persuaded you.”
Girty gave Simon a cheeky smile feeling slightly at ease, but that might have been the alcohol talking more then her actual mind set. But still Simon did not seem all to happy about her answer and Girty could have sworn she heard a remark along the lines of ”No, no physical contact at all…” She guessed he was referring to her less then eager attitude to show intimate affection for him, but seeing as she had told Alex he was the one for her it felt almost like cheating on him to kiss Simon (but clearly for her to kiss Alex when with Simon was not...) Deciding to over look the childish remark Girty looked at Simon and into his eyes and sighed, she could not believe that the time had come, but for some reason she always had a feeling that it would one day.
“Simon…our relationship it was…was never serious.” Girty lowered her gaze and started to play with her empty glass, sliding it from one hand to the other trying to focus all her nervous energy into that rather then letting it come out in her voice. “I mean we do not love each other.”

Simon watched Girty slid the glass from one hand to the other knowing far to well that is was trying to tell him something but she had no idea how. He did however start to worry when she started to mention that they did not love each other, maybe there was actually a bit on the side, it would explain her reaction to the joke…but maybe he was just being paranoid but he still did not like the tone in Girty’s voice. It was not her; she had not smiled or laughed truthfully. Sipping on his beer Simon looked at Girty over the top of his glass and it was then he thought he needed to lighten the mood and end this silly silence. Placing his glass down upon the table and raised his eyebrows over at Girty.
“You said you loved me once.” Simon grinned. “That was under duress…and a lot of alcohol…and the festive feeling of Christmas.” “The duress was fun though…” Simon laughed “Oh yes it was fun…” Girty blushed slightly “The best…” “I have nothing to compare it to…” teased Girty, poking her tongue out, feeling at home once again with Simon, like the day before it felt like it would be possible for these two to be friends even with their past history.
Simon carried on chuckling as he sipped on his drink, he could feel that something had changed between him and Girty but he could not put his finger on it. They still made each other laugh; they felt comfortable around each other (even if Girty for some reason was nervous tonight) and they got along like a house on fire, the only thing he did not understand was why she had brought up the emotional state of their relationship.
“Ok then Girt we have established the fact we do not have strong emotional attachments…am I going to like where the direction of this conversation is heading?”

Girty shrugged her shoulders at this statement, she did not know how he would react, if there had been a flaw in their relationship it was that they never talked about how the felt. Girty actually had no idea how Simon felt towards her and she was sure he did not know the mad confusion that was Girty Hubbles heart, even its owner had trouble untangling the mess.
“I do not know what you are going to think Si.” “Well the only way were are going to find out is if you actually tell me. Your not…” “No…no…not that.”
Girty bit her lip and reached out taking hold of Simons beer and took a rather large gulp out of it before passing it back over to him. It was now or never and although Girty would have preferred never to tell Simon she knew that it would be wrong to see both of them at the same time…she was not Dan and Alex did not deserve that.
“You know yesterday I kept talk about Alex…” Simon rolled his eyes but did not interrupt “…well me and him have been friends for a very long time and…and I care for him a lot. I think in my lower years I loved him at one point…but today…” I smile broke across Girty’s face at the mere memory of what had happened earlier that afternoon with her and Alex.
“He asked you to go out with him.” Simon picked up his beer and took a swig out of it while staring at Girty’s blank expression as once again he finished off what she had to say. “And by your smile you said yes.”
“Si I do care for you still….like any of my friends I would give my life to save yours, it…it is just with Alex…” “There would not be a moment’s hesitation to dive in front of that spell.”
All Girty could do was nod her head, she could not believe that Simon was able to finish every sentence she had started, they were on the same wave length and that worried her slightly in fear that the way she felt about Alex was the way he felt for her.
