Ash walked furiously down to the lake, he sat down on his favorite rock, and looked out at the lake, moonlight refelcting off it's surface. What got into him back there? He knew Ace was just playing around, but he just wanted to have at least one dance with Maxi before he had to get back to his prefect duties and Ashton wouldn't be able to see him as often. "Why do I always have to ruin it for everyone?" he asked himself softly as he began to cry. "I ruin everything. No wonder everyone is always mad at me."

It might have taken Ace a while to catch on but as soon as she did, she was out of the party like a bullet. She ran down the corridors and headed towards the Entrence Hall and the grounds. Ashton had left so suddenly, she didn't even have a chance to say good bye. She avoided many prefects and soon reached the cold outside. Fresh prints were in the snow that covered the grounds. Ace followed them to the lake.
She arrived at the lake to see Ashton sitting on his favourite rock. Ace ran towards him, to try get her warmer and to him quicker so they could leave sooner. "No one's mad at ya, mate," Ace said over Ashton's shoulder as she came closer to him. She came up behind him and wrapped her arms around his neck, puting their cheeks together. "Hey stranger," she said softly, "the party's died with ya and Maxi is dying ta dance but I think he really wants ya te dance with. I'm not what he's lookin' fer in any case. Come back with me, Ashie, please."

Ashton looked up at her, "But they are mad at me! Mark is, you were and even Maxi is mad at me. I can't go back there. I'll just ruin eveything, like I always do."

Ace let go of Ashton's neck and crouched down beside him. She studied the ground for the briefest moment before looking up at Ashton. "But," she protested softly, "I don't remember you ruining anything. I can't think of one instance where you did. All I know is that when I left the party, Mark was fine, Maxi looked like he was just missin' ya too damn much for anyone's health and we all love havin' ya with us, Ash, you just don't know it."
Ace sighed lightly and sat down on the ground next to Ashton's rock. It was cold and the snow was not helping. Ace rubbed her arms with her hands and looked back at Ashton. "Ya know what," Ace said with a wide smile, "you still owe me a dance. And Maxi's probably waiting for his too." Ace knew that wouldn't help Ash's mood but she wanted it said. "You've got so much to offer anyone that know you, Ash, and you don't even know it." She put a hand on Ashtons' arm, squeezed it affectionately.

Ash laughed. It wasn't his usual warm, infectious laugh that could light up a room, it was a harsh, bitter, cold laugh. "What have I got to offer?" He asked. He sighed, "I just don't know what's gotten into me these days. I mean, I love Maxi so much, and I'm so afraid of losing him, that I speak before I think, and look at the trouble it gets me into!"

Ace couldn't take this any more. She jumped to her feet and stood over Ashton. "What have you got?" she demanded, "you've got you Ashtom McLane, and that's more then enough." Ace tucked her hair behind her ears and frowned at Ashton. His little pitty parties was getting to be enough. "Stop this now," Ace demanded, and took Ashton's hands in hers, pulling him up, "use that mind of yours and think! That's how you get yourself out of troble. You march in there, you look Mark and Maxi in the eye and say, 'look, guys, I acted rashly but I've thought it over and now we can talk about this'." It was the only thing for it, being firm with Ash.

Ashton finally cracked a smile. "Thanks Acie. You're right, I'm being ridiculous." He gave her another smile, "Wanna piggyback ride back to the party?"

Firm always worked. Ace broke into a broad smile and flung her arms about Ashton's neck, squeezing him tight. When she released him she sent him a mischievous grin. "Ashton, what a silly question," she chortled, "you know I would!" She giggled and put her hands on his shoulders. She pulled herself up and brought her legs around his waist. Hugging his neck tightly, she whispered in his ear, "Max is lucky to have you, Ash."

Ash laughed. "I'd say it's the other way around. Now please loosen your grip before you strangle me woman!" he smiled shyly, even though Ace couldn't see it, and asked softly, "Wanna hear a new song I wrote for Maxi?"

Ace laughed and loosened her grip, as he said, relaxing as her ride took her to the castle and out of the cold. As Ash had pointed out he was lucky to have Maxi but what he didn't realise was that as Ash needed Max, Max needed Ash. This was the way of love that Ace had found out but clearly Ash had not yet done the same.
