Ash sighed as he closed his trunk, the lock clicking shut with a snap. He’d been packing for a little over two hours, and was now ready to leave. He was going back to France. He knew he would be probably be called a coward for running away, but at this point he didn’t really care. Besides, he didn’t really see it as running away. More like taking his life into his own hands. Getting out of this hell-hole. Why, oh why had he ever decided to come here!? To get away from Daniel of course; yet, the more he pulled away from Daniel, the more he pushed away his friends. He had lost Felicity and Bradyn, the best friends he’d ever had, and he had lost Maxi, his first love. He lost Laney, the little sister that meant the world to him, and he knew in his heart that it was only a matter of time before he lost Cris as well. They had been growing more and more distant ever since Cris had proposed.
He was starting to wish that he’d never accepted that ring, besides, who says a ring will make you love someone, and them love you? Ashton had foolishly believed that if they got married, they would fall even more in love. And look what was happening. After all, Ash had seen the way Cris looked at Daphne, and how he had barely acknowledged Ash’s greeting. Did the boy honestly think Ash was blind or something? Ash scoffed at the absurdity, and his own stupidity. Cristian had never loved him, he was just the rebound.
Even if Cristian had loved him, it was not the same as how Ash had loved Cristian. Ashton now realized however, that he had been a fool. Love did not exist; it was merely a game, created by the mined, to drive a person insane. No, what was he saying? Love did exist, although he would never be accepted into its embrace. After all, who would love the dramatic, overly-sensitive, cry-at-the-drop-of-a-hat emo boy? No one, that’s who. And so, Ash was going back to France.
He was sick of bending over backwards, trying to please these people, and it never being enough. They wanted to get rid of him? Well whoop-de-flippin- do, their wish was granted! Ashton was leaving. Would he come back? Eventually. Would he be the same? Hell no! Ash knew that if he ever wanted to feel like himself again, he had to do this. Hell, he didn’t even know who he was anymore! He needed to get out of here before he exploded. He was so sick of everything. The tears, the sadness, the bitter silences, the hurtful, angry stares, the whispers behind his back, he just had to get away from it all!
Taking one last look around the room, he shrunk his trunk and placed it in his pocket. Much easier for travel. Reaching over to blow out his candle, a glint of blue light caught his eye. He looked down, it was his ring. Ash just stood there and stared at the piece of jewelry that meant so much, and yet was one of the main causes why he was leaving. The boy sighed and slid the ring off his slim finger. Cris would probably want it back, and even if he didn’t, Ash certainly didn’t want it anymore. Placing it on the bed, he reached into his pocket for a quill and piece of parchment and quickly scribbled a note.
Cristian,
I’m sorry but I have to do this. I don’t know who I am anymore, and I need to get out of here and away from everyone before I go crazy. I know you and others will probably think me a coward for running away like this, but the honest truth is, I really don’t care what you think or anyone for that matter thinks about me anymore. Does this mean that I don’t still love you? No, not at all. I will always love you. But, we just weren’t meant to be. Had we taken things slower would they have worked out? Maybe. But we’ll never know.
I’ve seen the way you look at Daphne; it’s the same way you used to look at me. I know now that she’s the one you want, and I’m not going to hold you back from her. I hope she makes you happy, and I hope she gives you everything I couldn’t. I’m giving you your ring back, seeing as I obviously won’t need it anymore. I hope that you can find someone who deserves it more than I do. Just remember one thing, even if you do not have feelings for me anymore, I will always love you. And nothing can change that.
Ashton
He did not sign it ‘Love, Ash’ or even ‘Ash’ but merely, ‘Ashton’. It was his way of making a clean break. He laid the note on the bed next to ring, and taking one last look around the room; he stepped out and closed the door. Making his way down to the common room, he walked over to the entrance and stepped out into the corridors. He had no intention of telling anyone where he was going. The only person to know would be Cris. If he read the note that is, the others would figure it out soon.
Walking along the corridors, he reached the main entrance and slowly pushed open the door. He stopped when the door creaked loudly, and sighed in relief when no one walked up and yelled at him for being out during classes. He had purposefully chosen to leave at this time of day, knowing that students and teachers alike would be in the classrooms, and the few students that weren’t would figure he was either a rebel or did not have any classes at the moment. Stepping out onto the lawns he made his way down to the main gate, opening the gate, he slipped outside; he started walking down the road that led to Hogsmeade.
Halfway there, he looked back at the school and let a single tear fall down his face as he came to the realization, that he was leaving behind everything and everyone he’d ever loved. But, that wouldn’t change his decision. He was still leaving. Turning back to the road, he walked down the hill, and left Hogwarts behind…
