Echo had been wandering Hogwarts for nearly two hours at this point. Why didn’t Hogwarts have a gymnasium? Or empty room with a hardwood floor one could dance on? Everything was covered with ancient rugs or desks and chairs that she was afraid to move for fear of breaking something, ruining an heirloom or artifact or some such.
She was now on the seventh floor, double checking every room. It wasn’t as if she hadn’t looked for a dance-worthy room before, but Hogwarts was huge! She wanted to make sure she didn’t overlook anything…
“How peculiar…” she said pausing in front of a tapestry. She’d passed it a couple of times before, but now took the time to pause and really look at it. It depicted an obviously daft young man in pointe shoes, surrounded by trolls in tutus. She laughed, “Of all places, you’d think there’d be a place to dance near that.” It was then that an unusual crunching sound caught her ears. She turned around, gaze met by the most beautiful carved mahogany door she’d ever seen! It depicted nymphs performing some sort of ritual dance around a tree on the top of a mountain. She tilted her head, running her hand across the face of one of the Oreads… right before she realized how creepy she’d look standing in an empty hallway playing with a door, so she quickly pulled it open and stepped inside.
“Oh… my… heavens…” the room she was standing in was the most beautiful dance studio she had ever seen; the right and left walls were both solid mirrors, there was a barre reaching from the wall directly in front of her all the around to the one on her left, and the oak floor looked like it had just been laid out; brand new! As she stepped further into the room she realized the wall behind her, with the door, was littered with audio equipment; stereos, speakers, a magical music box connected to them and apparently played whatever kind of music she wanted to listen to! On the floor, in the corner between the sound equipment and the right wall, was a large poplar wood trunk which she opened to reveal “Costumes,” she breathed giddily. There were pointe shoes and jazz shoes, shoes for flamenco and ballroom dancing; there were top hats and canes, scarves, tutus, and belts with coins sewn on them so that they chimed as you moved.
Echo gingerly reached into the box and pulled out a pair of black hip-hop shoes, and was amazed to find they fit her perfectly when she tried them on! “This is insane…” she murmured to herself, pointing and flexing her toes to test the shoes. She stood up, practicing her toe stands before walking over to the music box and looking through all the unusual music. It didn’t take long before she found something that looked like it would be upbeat enough for her warm up. “Imogen Heap…” she said curiously. “Sounds like a muggle performer…” she mused before she found a song called ‘Loose Ends’ and pressed the ‘PLAY’ button. The melody started off slowly. Echo leaned and reached, stretching out and making sure she wouldn’t get hurt when she started dancing. As the music picked up tempo she began doing acrobatic jumps and flips, along with elegant leaps and pirouettes. It felt so good to be dancing on a real floor. She loved the challenge of having to improvise and alter her routines to fit the rough terrains her family performed on, but here, in this amazing studio… It was like floating on air, and it felt like flying.
