Okay, I'm going to do it. I'm going to stick my nose where it doesn't belong and lay my neck out on the chopping block. I feel it needs to be done, and I don't mind taking the heat for it.
Guys and girls, I've been hanging out around Ridd on and off for the better part of three years (Yes, I know I need to get a life). This site is effing brilliant and we all know it. Otherwise we wouldn't all be here... and we wouldn't all be up in arms over so many issues around the site.
The issues I know of specifically are job positions in general (yes, I know I've contributed fuel for that fire), and special abilities.
Believe me, I know how we all get attatched to our characters, and what things they can and can't do... but I think something important to remember (that granted, I on occassion do forget) is that in the end... we're all just people. We are all Harry Potter fans, and we all love role playing here... and whenever we get caught up in
"Well John said I could have this when he gave it up"
"I asked for this ages ago in my application"
"You can't have that. It's not available,"
and this one is the one that most irritates me
"Your idea is dumb"
we all end up looking like idiots. So here is my rant, and I hope I don't offend anyone too badly. And if you have issues with it, believe me, I understand. I just... want rid to be a friendly place to hang out again. These thoughts may help, or eveyone may hate me. Such is life.
Number One: Unless your name is Gail or Liz, you have no authority on this site at all. And trying to boss people around just makes you look like a dumb, petty, power-hungry brat. (And yes, I know I have looked like that before. A lot. I'm not trying to say I'm perfect, and I'm not trying to be condescending. If you choose to take it that way, that is entirely your prerogotive, though.)
Number Two: Jobs on the site are entirely circumstantial. Teaching positions are limited and we all just have to get over that. On the other hand, there are plenty of other positions that dearly need to be filled. There are plenty of positions at the Ministry, it's not hard to come up with something interesting to do with an adult character. There are multitudes of inter-ministry plots that needs workers to even become plausible. HOGWARTS IS NOT THE ONLY ANSWER. I think the biggest problem right now is a lack of communication, but I'll cover that in a minute...
Number Three: Special abilities are fun, but they're nothing to get your panties in a twist about. I've been watching the Spec. Ab. thread a lot recently, and it makes me sad. We're all being so petty and childish about everything. I repeat: Gail and Liz are the powers that be! You can not tell anyone what they can and can not be! It just makes you a cyber-bully, and dumb besides, because you can't change anything.
Look, it's pretend. If you have an issue with a character getting an ability... I'll go into that in a minute, too.
Number Four: Communication guys. There is a chain of command on Ridd, and it needs to be respected. If you have issues with a fellow rp'er about a plot/ability/job/etc... Please, please, please take it to them privately. Private messages are here for a reason. They're so that we don't have to humiliate each other publicly to try and make a point.
Now then, if you start your PM with "You shouldn't have (spec. ab./job/etc...), you/your plot/your reason for having it is dumb" don't expect the other person to say "Thanks for telling me I suck, I'll back off". Really, you aren't that stupid. But, if you feel uncomfortable approaching the person in a PM, take it to Gail or Liz. Make your case to them (with admins it's more accepted to say "I think this is stupid, don't let them have it"), because they actually have the power to change it. It's not that hard.
On a side note, communication is also a really great way to come up with ideas for characters. Just sayin'.
Five, and last: The Spec. Ab./Teacher Inactivity/Job threads were designed to help GAIL run this site more efficiently. NOT for you to show all you HP-lexicon wisdom as to why someone else can't be something else on a children's magical wizarding world role play forum. Does anyone else see how ridikkulus that looks? (Forgive the pun)
Has anyone else noticed how rare it is that Gail comes on anymore? I don't doubt it's because we've taken all these devices that she put together to keep peace and harmony on HER BEAUTIFUL FREAKING SITE, and we've turned them into little b-witch threads to try and put everything under our control. It doesn't work. You're not an admin. And, in short
Liz Addition:- Thank you Lena for doing this! I agree 100% with everything you have said, we need to keep our personal lives out of our rping and just have FUN!!! By the looks everyone is agreeing so lets hope this will stop the fights and bring back the good and entertaining theads!!
Sorry for any toes that get stepped on

It's pretend. Let's get over ourselves.
