It was just another evening in the Ravenclaw Common Room, and Effie was stuffing her Potions essay into her bag. It had been as thrilling as any potions essay could be and had managed to steal half the evening away, so she wasn't best pleased.
A quick glance around the room told her that the people she normally hung out with had gone elsewhere, having the sense of finding something more interesting. (Or perhaps the sense to do the essay three days ago when Effie was having a particularly violent game of exploding snap, as the case may be.)
She was slumped back in her armchair making a mental check list of where they could be, when her gaze focused in on a small group of third years seated in front of her. One of the boys in the group was a particularly mouthy one, and was showing off to a couple of girls his supposed "Seer" skills by guessing what number card they were holding.
'-And you've definately got a eight Caz.' A blonde girl beside him shrieked in delight and a few more showed impressed expressions, clearly oblivious to simple muggle card tricks that Effie's uncle had once shown her.
A quieter boy in the group, who Effie could see never got to be the centre of attention, muttered something sulkily under his breath. 'What was that Ed? Anyone can do it?' The "Seer" boy said loudly. 'I'd like to see you try.' He handed over the pack of cards with a smug, arrogant expression that made Effie wrinkle her nose.
The shyer lad, who was the only one facing her directly, eventually took the pack of cards. Fumbling, he spread the deck out into a fan for one of the girls to pick from. The whole group turned to him as the card was chosen, and he obviously didn't have a clue what the number was. Thats when Effie had an idea. She sat a bit higher in her chair, and glanced at the girls card.. three of clubs. She gave a loud cough and looked directly at the shy boy and as soon as he caught her eye, she held up three fingers and gave him an encouraging nod.
The boy looked down, and then stole a glance at Effie again. 'It's a three.' The group broke out into noise, everyone equally impressed.. everyone of course, other than the original "Seer". 'It's pure luck.' He immediately dismissed. 'Bet he can't do it again.' Effie helped him another four times before the arrogant boy would accept it, in the meantime the group were eagerly chatting away to "Ed" who, to Effie's pleasure, was looking much more happy. 'I guess his Seer skills are just rubbing off on me thats all.' She heard him say making her smirk.
Slumping back down in her chair, Effie returned to her thoughts of where her friends could be (too lazy to actually go look for them of course).
