David shivered as he walked out to the lake's edge. Everything was so calm and cold this morning even the dew drops on the the grass were still. He walked over and stood on a rock the jutted out into the lake. He could see nothing beneath the lake's surface. He reached down and grabbed a stone seeing if he could perfect his skipping. He glided the rock across the lake's icy suface and waited for something interesting to happen.

Girty had got very little sleep during the night. One of the girls in her dorm had been talking in her sleep while another snored rather loudly. She had heard enough of how the other Hufflepuff wanted a bigger slice of cake, and so Girty thought she would head out of an early morning stroll.
Walking down the dew covered grass bank she noticed someone else standing by the the lake. Changing direction slightly Girty walked up behind him and watched as he skimmed the stone across the still water.
“That is a good technique. I can only mange 3 skips at best before my stone sinks.”

David turned around to see a Hufflepuff he knew by sight to be Girty Hubbles. "It's not too hard you just have to find a rock that's flat and you have to hold to level. Besides 3 skips isn't bad it's more then my sister can manage." He smiled thinking of his sister trying to skip rocks. "Cold morning isn't it."

Girty managed to produce a small smile, the idea of having to find the right stone to skim actually made the pastime more confusing. Girty normally gave up after the first few attempts and just threw the stone into the lake instead.
“It is cold. The type of morning designed to keep students inside by a warm fire doing homework. Not that many students would be working this early, the sane ones are still asleep.”
With a soft laugh, Girty turned to look at David trying to work out if she had seen him before. Maybe she had in passing in the corridor, but never face to face. Suddenly becoming aware that she was still looking at the Gryffindor with out saying anything Girty thought it best to try and get the conversation going again.
“So what brings you out this early? For me it is lack of sleep, I really need to cast the silencing spell on the girl who snores in my dorm.”

David Laughed "well, if there was a girl talking in her sleep about chocolate that would be my sister." He noticed Girty looking at him and he guessed he looked pretty bad this morning. "I just came out here because I was restless.. And I also had a problem with people snoring." He smiled and walked over to her. "Here, this one is a good stone." He said as he handed her a smooth flat stone.

Girty gave a small laugh and looked out over the lake. To be honest she could not remember who was saying what. But she knew she had to say something to try and stop the silence. Watching the boy pick up a stone Girty studied the rocks he went for before noticing he was handing one towards her. Taking a few seconds to realise she reached out and took it.
It was cold in her hands, but it was so smooth. With a small week smile she moved to the edge of the lake. She had no idea what to do and simply stood still looking from the stone to the water.
“Is there any certain way I should do this?”

David looked over at her she seemed lost and a bit confused like a puppy who gets passed around to much from person to person to person. "Well, you just throw it like you would a frisbee." He said moving his arm and demonstrating how to move it. "Then you just try to keep it level when you throw it out and if it's a good stone it will go pretty far." He stepped back a bit to watch what she would do.

Girty nodded her head while thinking about what David had said. The concept seemed easy enough, and there was much more of an art to it then she first thought. Taking a deep breath Girty gripped the stone in her figures and bet her wrist and arm around. With a sudden lurch she unleashed both and let the stone go flying across the lake. It bounced once, then twice but the it flailed as it tried to do a third.
With a shrug of the shoulders, Girty turned around and looked at David with a broad smile on her face. “I think I need more practise.”

David watched as the stone sunk to the bottom of the lake never to be seen again. He smiled she had tried that meant something and it hadn't been a bad try either. "Good try, really your a natural." He smiled again and looked up suddenly blinded as the sun came up over the hills throwing a gold blanket of light over what had been bare and gray. "Well, I'm guessing it's probably breakfast time now." He looked at his wrist and realized he had forgotten to put on his watch that morning. "Well, it was nice meeting you. I probably have to go, so bye for now." He waved good bye and turned to walk back the way he had come. He wondered what was for breakfast and if he would get the package of the all-embarressing underwear from his mother.

“No do not go! Please stay a while longer. Breakfast will not go cold”
Before Girty knew what she was doing she had shouted after David and began to walk after her. She was unsure why she wanted him to stay, maybe to get some more practise in or even to have someone to talk too. She smiled weakly at the Gryffindor and continued to watch him closely.
“And anyway you did not tell me your name. You can not leave without even telling me who I had the pleasure of skimming stones with.”
In her mind Girty knew she was hoping that David would stay in hope that she could have someone to talk to who was not a Hufflepuff. Ever since Dan had started to work at the school a lot of the people in the common room had begun to avoid her and she never really got the opportunity to talk to people form other houses. She was seen by many as the enemy.

David turned around curious why she wanted him to stay. He had merely thought that she would be tired of him by now. "I'm David Dreezel." He suddenly smiled. "No, it will not go cold probably something I don't like anyway." He said lying he knew he would like whatever they would be serving but he felt he should stay he did not yet know why, but it seemed like this Hufflepuff needed his company for right now, so he would stay. "And you are Girty Hubbles the famous Huffflepuff, am I not correct?" He walked over and sat beneath a tree and motioned for her to sit also. "I think it is the begining of a beautiful day, don't you?"

When David turned around and began to walk back Girty felt a smile break out on her face, only for it to vanish just as quickly. She nodded her head in agreement with his statement, she was Girty Hubbles, and it was not the first time famous had been put in front of her name. With a sigh she walked over and sat by David still thinking about how she was now known throughout the school.
“Yeah, I hope so anyway. I have care of magical creatures later. It becomes such a drag when it is raining. However I do still enjoy it, even if I am a bit cold.”

"Yes, I had that class last year; it was pretty annoying when it rained." He wondered why her smile had disapeared so quickly; he guessed he had said something wrong but he did not know what. He watched as the sun came further over the hill and everything became brighter. As the sun was just starting to glow brightly a could passed over its face causing the grayness of the day seep back abit. "Maybe I was wrong." He laughed not quite sure what to say next. He looked over at her hoping she would say something to fill in the silence.

Girty had been focusing on a blade of grace swaying in the wind, when the change in light caused her to look up at the cloud covered sun. she chuckled at David’s comment and shock her head.
“No, it will be a lovely day. Well has nice as you get it in November. However we must remember this is Scotland the weather changes so much, it could snow for all we know.”
Girty gave a laugh and thought about the last time it snowed and the snowball fight that the Hufflepuff’s had had. With a sigh she turned to face David.
“I prefer the morning though, the day is ahead, the first light breaking through. The forest at dawn is amazing the shafts of light breaking through, birds in the trees. Yes I think dawn is a marvellous time of the day.”
