Zerrubabel sat under a tree looking over the churning waters of the lake. The wind had begun to whip up foam on the crests of the waves, and it made Zerrubabel feel more at home. He hadn't done much at Hogwarts in his time there, just going to classes and getting by with more acquaintances than friends. He had made a resolution to change that with the new term, he didn't want this time to pass him by. He saw some tentacles rise from the foam for a moment before diving back into the icy depths. He missed the sea, and his parents, and his old friends at Durmstrang. Actually he didn't miss them, they were rather cruel individuals oftentimes. He used his wand to pick up a stone and skip it across the lake, nearly making it to the other side. This year would be different...he was sure of it.

Maria walked down to the lake. The wind was whipping her hair all around her face, but she found it to be a pleasant sensation and didn't bother to fix it. As she walked she noticed someone sitting under a tree. When she got closer, she noticed that it was a boy around her age, who she could not remember having ever seen before. Curious, she headed toward him.
When she got closer, she brushed her hair out of her face and noticed that he seemed a bit sad. Maria had always had this bad habit of wanting to talk to people when they looked like they needed a friend, and this boy definitely did. She walked over and sat down beside him, not even bothering to ask if he wanted to company. "Hello," she said with a small friendly smile. "I don't believe I've seen you around before."

"You better watch yourself," Professor L'Keitha interrupted Zerrubabel's ruminations. "Vampyroteuthis can be quite fickle." With a flourish, a purple blanket unfurled from the tip of her wand. She sat down. "One moment, you're tickling it, the next it's taking down a whale - and the entire ship with it."
"But then again," she paused, watching a tentacle whip out from the frothy currents and snatch a bird from the sky and retreat just as suddenly, "I'm sure you knew that."

Moments before, Zerrubabel had been alone, now he had been joined by two people. First he turned to the Hufflepuff student who had sat down next to him. "Hello, the name is Zerrubabel. You probably haven't seen me before because I am usually invisible." Now why had he said that? That's probably why he didn't have many friends, he thought to himself. Or maybe because he was a kleptomaniac, it came with his previous profession. Oh well, life goes on. Zerrubabel then turned to his herbology professor, who was flattening the blanket next to him. "Hello professor. How is that monster of a plant doing?" Zerrubabel remembered the plant he had seen in her office. It had attempted to swallow a small bear, which only just managed to wrangle free. He also remembered the oath he had taken, that plant would be dead the first chance he got. "So what are you two doing out here in the cold?" asked Zerrubabel, trying to be somewhat courteous, although he didn't really feel up to it.

"Oh, invisible in what way?" Maria asked inquisitively. "I can't see how you could be invisible that much, that after five years of being at this school I wouldn't notice you," she said smiling sweetly at him.
She looked over at the professor who had sat down also. "Hello, Professor," she said politely, beforing turning back to the boy and answering his question. "It isn't that cold," Maria said although she was proven wrong as she suddenly shivered as a particularly strong gust of wind blew. "Okay, so it is a little cold. I find it refreshing."

"You mean Dionaeatron? Doing fine, but I'm still deciding whether it's appropriate to use it for a lesson - does have a penchant for little girls and lost puppies," the professor shrugged. She blew a puff into the chilly air, her powdery breath visible in the cold. Swirling into faint dragons, the breath dispersed as it reached the lake.
"Well, I'm off. Trust you two won't be tardy to the next class?" the professor stood up, the blanket disappearing with a rustle. Gingerly picking stray leaves from her hem, she swept the heavy velvet cloak over her shoulder. "Stay warm, Miss Turolia, Mr. Jones."

"Goodbye professor, see you in class." Zerrubabel turned to the girl next to him and spoke, "I haven't been at this school long, I transferred from Durmstrang after third year. Before that, I was on the seas. Hence, I am a couple years older but probably none the wiser. Professor l'Keitha can attest to that, considering my most recent first attendance of her class. And I was joking about invisibility, although I do hide quite well, if I do say so myself. " He paused for a moment and felt the cool air about his face. "Yes, it is refreshing, but I prefer the sea air and rum, or the odd governer's daughter to be quite honest."

"Goodbye," Maria said as she watched the professor leave. Turning back to the boy she said, "Durmstrang, how fascinating. I do believe that would explain how I haven't noticed you before. Wait a minute," she said the information just sinking in. "The seas? Why?" she asked curiously, hoping she wasn't being rude by asking.
"What year are you in anyway?" She asked the question realizing that she knew very little about him."Oh, and by the way, I'm Maria," she said not bothering to give her last name since the professor had already said it.

"I have always lived on the seas, my father and myself are pirates. Not necessarily in the traditional sense. Being wizards, it is much easier to prey on cargo ships than trying with guns. We like the old pirate stories that muggles tell, so we decided to enchant an old 24 gunner. We usually disguise ourselves as the pirates of old, like blackbeard and so on. It really is a lot of fun, and quite profitable, although it seems to be frowned upon by most of wizard-kind. So he sent me off to school a few years late, and then I moved here. The dark arts are...well...too dark for me. I am in 5th year, although I try to keep my age a secret. It is a little embarrassing at the best of times, so I would appreciate your discretion." Zerrubabel leaned back against the tree, and something caught his eye. He looked to where the glint had been and found an emerald pendant with the letters EK carved magnificently in silver. Zerrubabel picked it up and examined it. It must have been the professor's. "Sorry Maria, but I think I've got to run. Seems the professor dropped something a moment ago. I've been looking for an excuse to see her in her office anyway, she has the best tea, and I must admit she is quite the knock-out." Zerrubabel performed his normal courteous bow, and left the lake to catch the professor.
