Basil rounded a corner for the fifth time, the walls still the same and not passing a soul in sight. He sighed. Barely into the first day and he was already lost.
Scratching his head in a nervous tick, he felt the color rise in his cheek as panic began to grip him. What if he'd never find his way out? Was this how they tested the first years - weed out the weak, slow, or stupid ones?

Lidia had been on her way to class when she saw a boy who looked utterly frustrated. "Are you okay?" She asked, coming up in front of him. He looked like a first year, but so did a lot of 2nd and 3rd years. She remembered her first day at a new school, she got lost many times. Maybe, more than what is considered possible. Aniela slightly giggled at herself. "If you want I can walk you to your class. Maybe, on the way there I can teach you a little trick with that wand of yours." She said, with a smile. Right now was not one of her Slytherin moments.

Startled, Basil looked up at the 7th year, who stood a good head taller than him. "Um yeah, I'm alright, thanks. Either I'm turning the same corner or these walls are teasing me..."
With a low scraping sound, the wall just behind them began to rotate, stirring up dust and settling in a right angle from its former position. A new corridor had formed. Basil was not too amused.
"I don't want to be a bother, but do you happen to know how I can get to..." the boy looked down at the crumpled parchment he'd been wringing and the scheduled scrawled on it. "...to the Charms classroom?"

Lidia gave a slight laugh. "The walls are probably teasing you." She said, smiling down at the boy. She looked up to see the wall behind him rotate. This school always did have a mind of its own. That was something that she hated about this place.
"Oh, you're not bothering me. I'd be happy to help. My name's Aniela by the way, but you can call me Lidia."
She looked down at his schedule. "The Charms class.. Oh, yes that's on the third floor. Well, let's go." She said, with enthusiasm as she walked with the boy. "So what other classes will you be taking?"

"Hello Lidia," Basil said, holding his hand out, his posture oddly proper for his age. "A pleasure - I'm Basil Embry. I'm also taking defense against dark arts... history of magic... transfiguration...herbology, I think, and... I think that's it." Unsure of what to say next - he rarely had to interact with anyone other than his father while growing up, he settled for a strained silence.

"It's lovely to meet you Basil Embry. You've chosen some of the harder classes I see." Lidia said, taking his hand firmly. She lead him down the stairs before they had a chance to rotate. Once they got into the corridor she looked down at him. "So how are you liking Hogwarts? If you have any problems don't be afraid to ask me anything." She said, starting to lose her Slytherin edge. The silence that had lingered with them before drove her crazy. So why not have a conversation with the boy till he got to his class?

"Oh I'm liking Hogwarts a lot so far - everyone seems pretty nice and - " Basil suddenly realized how trite that sounded, and the words fumbled in his mouth. "That is, I'm sure not everyone is nice - I mean, uh... but you are! I just meant that not everyone is nice every where..." Letting his sentence trail off, he decided to stop talking for a bit.
The two walked in silence, neither knowing quite what to say. "So um... what house are you in?" Basil squeaked, hoping to at least fill the air with small talk. Adults did that a lot.

"Well, that's good. It's a good place to learn magic. Even though this place has had its own problems with the Ministry." She said, with a look of disgust. Lidia gave a small laugh as he began to babble. "I know what you mean. I'm not usually not this nice." She said, patting him on the back.
The silence between them was unsettling. It was going to drive her crazy, but he decided to talk. "I'm in Slytherin. Shocking isn't it!" She said, looking down and realizing she hadn't put on her robes because she was in such a hurry. "Accio." She said, with a wave of her wand. Her robes came flying down the hall and quickly she grabbed them and put them on.

"Wicked!" the Gryffindor gasped as the Slytherin put an arm through her robes. "I never really get to see much magic - my father's the nervous type... always worried that if he did too much magic around me, I'd start being reckless and all." Basil scratched the back of his neck as they continued walking. "I don't really understand the House thing. I mean, I thought after you-know-who an all, it's just a relic, you know? An excuse for intra-murals and themed decor..."

Lidia smiled down at him. "I think the houses are more than that. I think they help define who we are. You're going to be brave and courageous. Just as I am cunning and you don't want to be on my bad side." She said, noticing how excited he got about the magic. She laughed at the thought of his father. "Your father sounds a lot like mine. The only difference is I think I had more older brothers than you do." Lidia sighed.
