Mother always said that breakfast was the most important meal of the day: it gave you energy for the day and took away the funny butterfly feeling Laura sometimes got before big events. And today was an especially big event. It was her first day at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and she had so many butterflies in her stomach she thought that she had taken all her dorm mates butterflies along with her own when she had left the dorm room (and before anyone else had even gotten up, no less).
So Laura made her way to the Great Hall. When she entered, she gazed around. This was the first time she had been able to really take in all that there was to see in the Hall as their sorting the previous night had kept her eyes ahead of her and on the funny old hat. It had told her many funny things like she was very like her mother but too clever and determined for Hufflepuff. Laura had no idea what it had meant but was happy with being in Ravenclaw, just like her big brother.
She took a seat at the Ravenclaw table and looked around at all the food that they could have. At home there was never this selection. It was either toast with jam or marmalade or it was porridge. Tea came standard too but Laura wanted something cool for her dry throat. She poured herself a glass of the pumpkin juice that stood in a jug near her and took a long sip. Smiling happily to herself, Laura dished herself some cornflakes and prepared that for eating. She stuck her spoon in, took a big bite and began looking around as she chewed while slowly other people came into the Hall.

Alexis was famished, as usual. So she went to her room and changed her clothes, she didn't want to impose her smelly sweaty self on any undeserving, unsuspecting students. Showering and then throwing on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt, her usual wear under the robes that were her school uniform. Pulling it over her head she grabbed her things and headed down for breakfast.
Term had only just started but she had already started her new exercise regiment. She couldn't help it she was a stickler for working out that was the one things about her that never seemed to change. As she entered the hall she noticed that it was starting to fill up fast, so she needed to get a good seat. At the Ravenclaw table she noticed one girl who looked new so she guessed she was a first year.
Happy to meet someone new she took the vacant seat saying, 'It all looks so good doesn't it. I'm having trouble deciding on what to have myself. Oh I'm Alexis by the way Alexis Heart.' She smiled at the younger girl and at the table trying to figure out what it was she wanted this morning.

Laura swallowed her mouthful and turned her head to see a girl sitting next to her. Laura smiled at her and nodded once again picking up her spoon. 'But I think that once you've chosen one thing you'll want another,' she said, eyeing the toast and jam now and almost regretting her decision. But she didn't. She rarely had the chance to have cornflakes as Mumma thought it wasn't suitable for young stomachs. So Laura took another large mouthful of cornflakes, put her spoon down again, and smiled, puffy-cheeked, at Alexis.
Once she had swallowed, Laura wiped the line of milk that was on her chin and giggled at herself. 'I've heard of you,' she said, sitting straighter and beaming brightly at her fellow Ravenclaw, 'Russell told me that you and he and Aceie made friends at the end of last year. Aceie kept butting in but that's what she does.' Laura smiled up at the girl and stirred her cornflakes. 'But I guess you know that, don't you?'
Laura was a very vocal person for one so small but she forgot the prime rule her bothers had taught her. She had forgotten to introduce herself. 'Oh,' she said, 'I'm Laura.' She added this through another big bite of her cornflakes which she hid behind her hand. Laura swallowed and began to laugh. It was very funny for her to talk through her breakfast ad get little bits of it on er hand. She wiped them off on a serviette and smiled.

As she waited for the younger girl to swallow her food to begin conversation Lexi glanced around the table trying to figure out what she wanted to eat. Everything looked so good and if she could she probably would have taken a little bit of everything but she knew it would make her look like a total glutton. So she opted on some eggs a couple of strips of nice smoky bacon a couple of pieces of toast with a dollop of butter and a cup of pumpkin juice. Satisfied she took a small nibble of her bacon quickly washing it down with some juice. Wiping her mouth with a napkin she smiled when the girl started to talk.
Lexi was soon smiling so much so that her face hurt. She couldn't believe it this was Laura Russell's little sister. He had mentioned her before and Lexi had promised to help look after her when she started. In all her time worrying about the term she hadn't remembered she'd be starting. 'Oh Laura it's so great to finally meet you. You're brother speaks so highly of you. I'm glad I finally get to put a face with the name. So how are things going so far?'

Laura began to laugh when Alexis got all excited about meeting her. She found this very odd as Laura was only a first year but Russell did so love to go on about her (or so said Aidan and Derryl). She had never met someone where she knew all about them before their first meeting. It was weird but Laura knew that she couldn't trust everything her brothers told her so she would have to find out things for herself. She took another bite of her cornflakes and chewed thoughtfully.
She swallowed and grinned at Alexis. 'They're wonderful,' she said, 'I'm really having a good time. So many new people, so much to see and eat. It's wonderful.' She looked up and down the table excitedly when she mentioned the food. 'I start with classes today,' she informed Alexis with a great big grin on her face, 'I can't wait. I start with Transfiguration which I hear is so much fun. I'm very excited.' She smiled up at the older girl, brushed her fringe out of her face and asked, 'what has Russell told you about me?' She was always curious to hear what he said about her.

Alexis was listening to Laura. She felt like she herself had almost forgotten what it was like to be a first year. Not that it was so long ago but being older was just a bit more fun like now she was allowed to go into Hogsmeade with the other third years. Little things like that were enjoyable. But being a first year getting to learn all this new stuff was cool too.
She watched as Laura looked around with what Alexis called an excited look on her face. Then she perked up as the younger girl mentioned transfiguration which happened to be Alexis' favorite subject. She was looking forward to the first class of the term as well. 'Oh yes transfiguration is one of the best classes here at Hogwarts, and your brother says you're so smart I'm sure you'll do well. First year is always the best you get to learn so many new things.' She was excited for her for some odd reason.

Laura ate while Alexis spoke. If there was one thing Laura was not shy on it was eating and that became very apparent when she reached for the large bowl of porridge and scooped herself a generous helping. She added the necessary and dug in, smiling all the while. Even though she rarely had the opportunity to have cereals for breakfast, Laura lover her porridge and couldn't imagine going a breakfast without it. So she ate it as though it was going to run out of her bowl and out the door.
At the mention of Transfigurations, Alexis's face light up, Laura noticed. She grinned widely, like Derryl did when he was embarrassed by Aidan. Transfiguration did sound like fun and Laura couldn't wait for it to come, or any of the others. But then she thought about Potions. She had heard nasty things about the Potions teacher and was a little nervous about it. 'What about potions?' Laura asked, as casually and coolly as she could, but her voice betrayed her nervousness. Her brother's had nothing nice to say about the Potions master and she was worried.

At the mentions of Potions class Alexis' smile slipped a bit but she placed it back on as best she could. It wasn't like her to go around bad mouthing teachers, well at least not in the Great Hall anyway. Too many ears listening but...She had always thought she'd like potions and be quite good at it, but the professor well he didn't exactly give off the ere of being someone who nurtured future potion makers. Trying to decide what to say to Laura, Alexis made a show of putting food in her mouth and chewing slowly.
She remembered what she promised her brother. Swallowing she gave the girl a serious look. 'I don't know what you've been told. but let's just say I wouldn't piss him off if I were you. He's not what one would call warm and fuzzy, no he's more mean and scary. Just do your work, and behave and you'll stay under the radar.'
She hoped she hadn't completely scared her, but the more she knew the better off she would be.
