Charlie drew his arms over his head as he yawned and stretched out after he had finished his coursework for the night. He headed up to his dorm to put away his books. He set them down beside his bed and crouched down to reach beneath his bed to pull out his old chess set. He dusted it off and stood up to go back down to the common room.
As he walked down the stairs he remember back to playing with his father and grandfather when he was younger. Together they had both taught him how to play the classic board game, of course, back then it was muggle chess so the pieces didnt violently destroy each other. The set he had was a wizard chess set so he could play by himself against the magical pieces, although he prefered to play against humans, it was much more fun and challenging. He hoped somebody would be up for a game tonight. He set the board down on an end table between two comfotable chairs, both of which were empty. He began placing the peices in their correct spots and waited to see if anyone would join him.

Adriana looked up from behind the pile of books that made up her classwork and watched as a boy walked across the room carrying a chess set. He seemed to be a little lost in thought, she noticed. As he set up the pieces to the game, she looked down at the single paragraph she had to write before she'd be finished up for the night. Sighing, she settled down to write the final little bit. Done! she thought excitedly. The boy had finally finished setting up the last of the pawns and looked as though he wanted someone else to play against him. She piled all of her stuff in a single group, then stood up and walked over to the free chair by the boy. "Excuse me, she said, brushing her dark hair from her sapphire eyes. "But are you maybe looking for someone to play against? I'm a little rusty, but anything to get my mind off of school work." She smiled, hoping that he wasn't waiting for anyone in particular.

((Is this before the Quiditch thread or after it? I am a bit confused on how time works in this RP. For now I will just assume its before by your post ))
Charlie put the last pawn on its correct square just as the girl approached him and asked to play. He looked up with a look of mild surprise at the attractive girl smiling down at him. "Absolutely, grab a seat. Although if I knew your name that would be helpful, as I dont reckon we have met" he replied with a slight smile as he nodded towards the chair across from him.

(( I have no idea. I don't know how time works here either. Let's just go with before the try outs because you already did ))
Adriana sat down gratefully, making sure to smooth out her skirt as she sat. Smiling, she said ,"No, we haven't. I'm Adriana Kent. Might I ask your name?" She thought the boy looked familiar as she looked at him, but she couldn't quite place him. Maybe he was in a class with her, but he looked a little older so that probably wasn't it. She'd probably just seen him in the common room one time or another. "I'm sorry," she said, blushing a little. "You just look so familiar. Probably just because we're in the same house I suppose." She smiled again and laughed a little, feeling stupid.

((Ok we'll go with that, sounds good))
"Yea I think I recognize you, I guess we never really properly introduced though. I'm Charlie Ackers, I'm in my fifth year here" Charlie replied a bit clumsily. He was always bad with first impressions and introductions. "I believe you are a fourth year arent you?" he inquired. "Oh, back to the game, which color would you like?" he added with a look down at the board.

Adriana nodded, affirming that she was in fact a fourth year. "It's nice to meet you, Charlie. And oh, um..., she started, not entirely sure which colour she'd rather use. "I guess I'll go with er... black." In truth, it didn't really matter to her. She had no preference for one over the other except for she would really rather not have to start the game. It had always made her uncomfortable when she played against her brother back home. "Wait. Is that alright with you?" she asked concernedly, "or would you rather be black?" She tilted her head to the side waiting for an answer.

Charlie gave a small chuckle at Adriana's concern over such a trivial matter and replied with still a noticable nervousness in his voice "Yea thats fine, it doesn't matter to me, I'll go aheand and go with white, I've always like starting off the game. Shall we begin then?." With that he nudged the pawn located in front of his king forward two spaces with his pointer finger and then proceded sit back and await Adriana's move He struggled for a moment to think of something else to talk about and then asked a bit akwardly "So do you, uh, play chess often then?"

"No, not at all," Adriana replied with a sheepish grin. "I mean, I play every once and a while against my brother, but that doesn't happen all the often, so no." She smiled at Charlie for a moment before looking down at the board in between them. He'd already moved which meant it was her turn. "Hmm..." she said as she rested her elbow on the table. Leaning her head onto her hand, she stared at her pieces. She knew this was hardly the time to be thinking this hard. It was only the very start of the game after all. After a few seconds, she'd decided on a move. "You," she commanded, pointing towards the pawn in front of the pawn Charlie had moved, "Move up two squares, please." The pawn walked to across the two squares. "Thank you," she added as it plopped down in it's new home. She smiled once again and looked up at Charlie. "So, do you play often?" she asked, still smiling.

"Oh ok, so do you want me to take it easy on you?" Charlie replied half joking, half seriously with a small smile. Then continued on "I played quite alot before coming here to Hogwarts with my dad and grandfather at home. Together they taught me how to play when I was pretty young. Although I dont get to play much here with all the school work and quiditch. So its nice to relax and play again." With that he proded another pawn forward two spaces.

Adriana smiled and nodded. "Yeah," she said. "It really is. I almost never have time to relax." She told another of her pawns to move forward which it did and then said, "And you don't really need to go easy on me. But if you play really well, be prepared for the fact that this game probably won't last that long." She giggled at herself and smiled once more. "My older brother taught me to play... Well, actually my father taught me to play correctly, but my brother taught me first." She grinned. "I used to think that the queen was the one I had to protect and so would always leave my king wide open. And um... also that bishops weren't allowed to attack anyone because they were religious or some bull like that. Oh, and uh... that the rooks couldn't move or be killed because they were made of stone." She blushed and bit her lip. "I'm a little gullible you see," she explained. "And my brother likes to use that to his advantage. You haven't got any siblings or anything, have you?"

"Nope, I am an only child, which I still really havent figured out if that is a good thing or a bad thing" Charlie replied as he made another move, this time with his knight. "I was a bit lonely growing up, but I suppose I didnt have to put up with siblings or any of that stuff." He paused for a moment as he reflected back and then continued "So do you have just a brother or do you have anymore siblings."

"Just the one," Adriana replied. "Thank goodness. I don't know if I'd be able to put up with another sibling like him. He's great. Just a little too much sometimes. Hmm..." She looked at the chess board, trying to think up a move. After a seconds thought, she ordered a bishop forward. "You can't do that," the bishop said defiantly; a couple pawns made noises of agreement. "Oh," Adriana said, blushing again. "Well, could you go there..." "No! I only go diagonally, you great berk," interrupted the bishop. Adriana frowned. She was upset now. "I obviously don't know the rules as well as I thought," she muttered. Another cry of agreement rose from the pawns. She glared down at them and they became silent. "Okay, you, pawn in the end, go forward two," she commanded. The pawn did as bid and she smirked down at it as it did so. "Sorry," she said, looking back up at Charlie. "Unruly pawns..."

Charlie laughed at the dialogue between the pieces and Adriana. "Well I am sure you'll be decent once you get the hang of it again." Charlie replied trying to sound somewhat encouraging as he moved his knight again. He decided he would cut her some slack and not play very well agianst her. He once again searched for another topic of conversation for a moment before asking the only thing he could come up with "So, how old is your brother? Does he go here or did he go here?"

Adriana had another pawn move up a space, worried that if she asked any of the back row pieces she'd get yelled at. "My brother is four years older than me," she stated, answering his question. "He graduated last year actually. I kind of miss him now to tell the truth. It's not nearly as noisy in here as it was when he was around. At least I don't think so anyway. He was probably quiet around everyone else but me." She fiddled with the edge of her skirt for a moment before adding, "He was in this house too like almost everyone else in my family." She looked at Charlie questioningly. "What about your parents were they in this house? Or Muggles..." She let her voice trail off. She hoped that the phrase hadn't come out rudely. That had been the last thing she'd been trying to do.

((I could have swore that I made a post yesterday in here, but I guess I didnt hit the reply or something))
"Hmm, I am not sure if I would recognize him" Charlie replied thinking back to the previous years. "I didnt really get to know alot of the older students. They are usually studying all the time, which is what we have to look forward to in the next few years." He added with a small sigh. "But, back to my parents, my mother is a witch, she works at the Ministry in the Department of International Magical Cooperation. Then my dad is a muggle, along with my Grandfather. They are both farmers. So well thats my family history." He answered her question and then asked her "So what do your parents do then?"
