Grace was once again patrolling, her shiny Head Girl badge glistening on her chest. She was on the third floor now and was heading towards the stairs towards the fourth floor when she noticed a book on the floor. She picked it up and began to read it as she walked on.
She was just walking now, following her feet, and read the book. Patrolling had become a bore since Andie had stormed off on her a few nights ago. Grace was worried about her but she hadn't been able to find her anywhere so what could she do. Not concentrating on the book any more, she tucked the book under her arm and looked around, seeing nothing but dark corridor and nothingness.

Andie stepped out from the shadows, her Prefect badge glittering in the moonlight, her face a blank unreadable mask. Her voice was cool as she quietly asked, "So, interesting book?" gesturing to the item in Grace's hand. She looked up, her eyes searching her friends face.

Grace nearly jumped out of her skin when someone stepped out of the shadows. Grace put a hand to her heaving chest and sighed gratefully, smiling when she saw it was only Andie. "Oh, Andie," she said, "you scared me." The action itself was not particularly frightening but she still had not recovered from her terrifying and haunting nightmare.
She smiled weakly at Andie before she looked at the book under her arm. Grace shook her head, "not really," she said slowly, "simple language and simple imagery. Too simple for my liking." She looked down at the ground wanting so to ask the question that was burning in her heart but felt confident that if Andie wanted to talk about it, she would. Instead, Grace asked, "how are you? It seems like weeks since I saw you last."

Andie shrugged. Her eyes had a faraway look in them, as if she was staring at something that only she could see, and her voice was distant and quiet as she answered. "I'm fine. How are you?"

Her curt answer didn't sit well with Grace but she didn't make anything of it. "I'm also fine, thank you," she said and smiled. "You patrolling too?" she asked, pointing ahead to show she was going to continue walking. She breathed in deeply as she walked on. She didn't know how to ask the things she wanted to so she hoped that Andie would make the first move.

The corner of Andie's mouth twitched with the slightest hint of a smile, and her voice was considerably lighter as she answered, "Well, I wouldn't be patrolling if I didn't have my badge on. Would I?" Yawning slightly, Andie reached into her pocket for her wand. "We sure could use some more light." She muttered, more to herself than to Grace. Pulling the wand out she held it aloft, and lit it with the single word of, "Lumos. " And there was a small pool of light coming from the tip of her wand

Grace gave a nervous giggled and shook her head. "No," she chuckled, "I guess you wouldn't." She smiled at Andie and noticed how cold she was being towards her. Grace didn't understand it but she didn't want to put the issue either. When Andie put her wand to light, Grace shook her head again. "I don't think that's a very wise thing to do," she said, "then all the scallywags will see us coming and we don't want them getting away, do we?"

Andie flashed Grace a qurky grin. Probably her first true smile in days, as she replied. "Oh don't worry, I have eyes like a hawk. I'll see them before they see me!" She paused for a moment, then let out a small laugh. "Just kidding. You're probably right." She quickly extinguished the light, and the two girls were once again plunged into darkness. They walked along a little longer, the silense quickly becoming stifling. Finally Andie could bear it no longer, and broke the silence. "So, what do you plan on doing after graduation?" she asked, peering at Grace curiously out the corners of her eyes.

Grace smiled nervously at Andie but she was clearly, save for the dark, relieved that she had put out the light. The dark seemed heavy, thought Grace thought that might just be the silence weighing heavy on her heart. She wanted ask, just shout out, ANDIE WHAT'S WRONG! but she couldn’t, her throat was dry and she couldn't get it over her heart to shout at her friend.
Relief. Andie spoke. It wasn't what Grace wanted to hear but it was better then nothing. Graduation! Grace thought. "I'm going to go straight into playing professional Quidditch for The Chudley Cannons," Grace said, beaming through the dark. It seemed lighter now, maybe her eyes had adjusted. "I'm very excited," Grace admitted, "but Bog ..." she sighed, "he doesn't want to leave me and I'm just worried that he won't experience everything the world has to offer him." She sighed again. "What are you going to do?" Grace asked, looking at Andie but seeing only silhouette.

Andie was silent for a few moments before replying. "I... really don't know." she admitted at last. "I guess I was so caught up in my own problem that I forgot to look at the bigger picture." She laughed, trying to add a bit of lightness to the mood, "Now that graduation is just around the corner, I'm getting kind of nervous!"

Grace smiled encouragingly. "Don't worry about not knowing," she said kindly, "my mother never knew what she wanted to do and that was never a problem. She did what she enjoyed and what made her happy." Grace smiled as she remembered things about her mother, they always made her feel better.

Andie smiled and nodded. "Your mother sounds like a very wise woman." she said softly, then sighed. "It's just that, my father loves me and has given me so much that I don't want to repay him by doing nothing with my life. I mean, I was sort of thinking of working at the Three Broomsticks as a Bar Attender after graduation. But you know, only for a couple years. After that? I don't know. And... I don't wanna let dad down. He's done so much for me."

Grace smiled. "That sounds like a good place to start," she said, "and it'll give you some time to ..." she trailed off and remembered something her mother said: thinking too hard on something and how it pan's out might mean missing it completely. Grace had a vacant exprecion on her face. Shaking herself, she finished, "... to think it through."
