Dan sat down in the staff room with his feet up on the coffee table, he stretched his arms up into the hair and then placed his hands behind his head. With a loud sigh he closed his eyes and enjoyed the peace and quite. He had had such a hectic day and had a pile of homework to do. Dan did not know why he ever set homework, he hated having to sit down and mark it, reading the same paragraphs copied from the same text book got boring after the fifteenth time around. The heat from the fire in the corner was relaxing and he could see the flickering of its light through his eyelids.
Keeping his eyes closed Dan summoned himself a drink of warm tea and slowly began to sip it. As the hot liquid ran down his throat he felt the warmth spread through his whole body, allowing his muscles to relax and his heart beat to drop. He was completely relaxed, his fowl temper was slowly being tamed and he actually felt like he could break into a smile. Unfortunately his period of relaxation was distracted by the sound of the door opening.

Offley stormed out of the library slamming the door behind her. She had reached her limit with those students, they were doing nothing but laugh and make crude jokes every time she walked past. How was she meant to work under such stressful and distracting atmosphere. So with a bundle of books Offley was heading down the corridor in search of a teacher to sort them out, they had no respect for her and even when she asked them nicely they refused to leave. After more jeers from students in the corridor Offley thought it best to head straight for the staff room where there must be a teacher.
Although as she opened the door she was left bitterly disappointed to find that the only person in the room was Professor Daniel Hubbles. Just the sight of him made her mouth go dry and her stomach churned over. She was half tempted to turn on her heel and head back to the library and put up with the crude jokes from the gang of Slytherin’s, nothing could be worse then this. As Offley turned to leave one of the many books slipped out of her arms and landed on the floor with a thumb.
“Imbecile.”
There was nothing else she could do but walk into the staff room. With a deep breath Offley held her head high, tightened her grip around her books and took a large step into the room.

Dan kept his eyes closed hoping it was either another teacher who would sit away from him and fall asleep or that the wind had anciently opened the door. For a while it seemed like it was just the wind, but then he heard a bang and a voice. His eyes opened so quickly that at first everything seemed to be a blur, then slowly everything came into focus and as he looked over the back of the chair he saw Offley Marsh. Dan really did not know what to say, he had gone to visit his old friend before but now, now this was different. She had come into the staff room, the girl who never used to leave the library when she attended the school. His forehead creased in confusion as he continued to watch Offley walk closer. Knowing that he could not sit here staring at her non stop Dan thought he would be civil to his old friend. Trying to get rid of his frown Dan switched to his smug smile and made sure that he kept his eye contact fixed on the new librarian.
“Offley, it is great to see you…what are you doing here?”
He studied her face for any flinch or sign of amusement. Offley always puzzled Dan greatly, some days she would be forward and fun while other days she while be reserved and in a mood with him.

Offley had seen that look on Dan’s face to many times before, the frown followed by his smug grin. But as his eyes reflected the dancing flames of the fire her heart began to throb. She had felt this pain far to many times, every time this man shone his boyish grin in her direction and she hated him for it, she hated him for making her feel this way but the burning passion she felt for him always broke down any resistance her sense may put up. Offley also knew that Dan was searching for anything that may indicate how she felt, he was not stupid and thus she was adamant that he purposely acted this way to tear her up inside. Trying to gain control once more Offley walked over towards the Professor and sat down on the chair opposite him.
“Do not look at me like that Daniel. I know what conclusions your little grey cells are jumping to and as normal they shall be incorrect. And please remove you dirt incrusted shoes off the table, it is not correct manors and it does your physical appearance no favours, the slouching gives you a double chin.”
Gently placing her books on the table by his stack of homework Offley then pushed Dan’s feet off the table and brushed off the flakes of dirt off its surface. With a content smile Offley folded her arms and crossed her legs and looked over at the professor almost waiting for his reaction, rumour of his temper had already reached her ears in the library and although she did not want to cause him pain she knew it would be nothing like the torture he but her through.

Dan did not look at Offley when she ranted at him, her words were hard hitting and uncalled for but he understood why she was saying it and the grin went from the his face for a brief moment. He pushed himself back in the chair so that he was sitting up straight and found himself stroke under his chin trying to work out of he really did have a double chin. After feeling satisfied that his chin was perfect Dan turned his focus back to Offley.
“You always tried to make me act in a way that was not me. You seemed to be looking for someone else, something else maybe. I could not understand it then and I can not now, all I know is that I do not want to lose you and so as normal I shall follow your orders.”
Dan looked over at Offley with a soft smile, his heart slowly pounded in his chest as he looked on at his old friend. If she wanted to Offley could be a very lively person but also keep her dignity and look beautiful. Dan tired to shake these thoughts away and remember that it would be too complicated for anything to happen, it had been such a long time he was sure that Offley no longer felt that way about him, he had moved on and was enjoying his life. Lowering his gaze back to his tea cup Dan stirred it idly before taking a large mouthful, burning his tongue in the process as the hot liquid slowly went down his throat.

Offley could feel her cheeks burn as Dan dared utter the words ‘I do not want to lose you.’ Only a man incapable of articulating his true thoughts into a relatively comprehensible sentence would lack the intelligence to overlook what he was saying. In short Daniel had said something that Offley really did not want to hear. Something that actually made her heart leap, that gave her a feeling of hope.
With a swift glance at Dan, Offley had to fight back the stinging sensation of tears in her eyes. Why did he torment her so, she knew he did not take pleasure in the situation, he was unable to keep eye contact with her. The retrieval of her serenity took a little longer then Offley had wished, so there had been a short period of time when nothing had been said between the two.
“Daniel, I wish you would not declare such statements. You are merely stating that you do not want to lose my friendship, I doubt we even have that at present Daniel. You are more concerned about losing the idea of having Offley to turn to. And the heart-rending thing is that you and I both know that I will always come running you.”
Offley’s voice never faulted once while informing Dan about a truth she was convinced he knew. Although her voice was steady it felt like a storm was raging inside, her stomach was turning over and with ever breath she took a painful tingling sensation spread right through her body. Exhaling Offley gave Dan a final smile before pushing herself up out of the chair. Her head was strangely light-headed and her legs were weak, but she had calculated that if she stayed in the presence of Daniel Hubbles any longer she would end up feeling worse and in a moment of weakness confess her true feelings and be forced to live with the pain of the truth. Offley knew she would rather live a lie then have to live in the shadow of rejection from the man she loved more then life itself.
