Professor Darrow sat anxiously awaiting his pupils for the beginning of the year, twiddling his thumbs absently, though he would appear to those all around him quite calm, at least to his colleagues whom he would, with any luck, develop good effective working relationships. Not a smile graced his lips though until students began entering the hall, as they gestured furtively at their new Headmaster, gossip soon spread throughout the hall within moments. Students eagerly found their friends talking excitedly about the new term, but more importantly about the summer holidays he guessed. Sitting upon his seat and awaiting the subsidence of the stream of excited children flooding in he smiled around, remembering the time, so long ago now, when he had entered for the very first time. It went without saying that he had been terribly nervous, but thankfully he had conquered his fears showing extraordinary resolve from the outset. Though he had by no means been the brightest lad ever he had worked hard and done reasonable throughout his life.
Clearing his throat gently and standing up he only waited a few moments for the chatter to die down.
“Good evening,” he said in a cool, calm voice which resounded throughout the hall. He felt a dull thrill of excitement course through his body, he rarely had the opportunity to speak in such a public place as this, some had called him a proficient speaker able to carry his audience well, but others had claimed he rambled off the point within moments, the students he knew would be judging him in just such a way.
“I trust you all had a pleasant summer, mine was unfortunately rather drab, through my own fault though as I spent some time in Russia of all places, before you ask I don’t in fact live there, I confess now it really wasn’t my cup of tea,” realising he had already gone off the point he smiled absently,
“But I digress, onto more important matters, the new academic year is beginning, I know I need not tell you all how very important this year will be. Especially those of you taking your OWL’s and NEWT’s. I wish you the best of luck; you will undoubtedly get what you deserve.” Looking keenly at his students it seemed he was looking into the soul of each and every one of them in turn.
“Also I’m certain I need not mention that there are many illustrious Ministry officials patrolling the school grounds and the like, please give them the same respect you give your teachers,” He said with a twinkle in his eye, knowing perfectly well that teachers received very little respect, he had no reason to be with nor against the Ministry, his main concern was the well being and success of his students, he believed they wouldn’t become a huge hindrance.
“An event I’m sure we look forward to immensely is the Quadwizard tournament, which I am told will be underway shortly, we of course wish to heighten the suspense and excitement,” Remembering times when he had listened intently to his Headmaster he knew the concentration span of people these days had diminished somewhat so concluded
“Without further ado let us begin the sorting,” Whilst he had spoken first years had filed in silently except for the occasional whimper,
“My doors are always open, any problems please don’t hesitate I hope you’ll find me more conversational and forthcoming than my visage might suggest.” Taking his seat he viewed the pupils wondering what they thought of him on first impressions. Whether liked or not though, he was the Headmaster and his voice was law, he did so dislike that, twas very disagreeable the divide which he would do his utmost to bridge between pupil and teacher.
As the sorting got underway a smile graced his lips and he took careful note of who was sorted where.
