LONDON -- Britain's mail service is conferring with retailers and renting out hundreds of extra trucks in anticipation of the launch of the seventh -- and final -- installment of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series.
The launch date for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows has yet to be announced, but the Royal Mail already has begun gearing up for the challenge of delivering the final volume to the hundreds of thousands of fans who are expected to order it before publication.
''We're already planning for the launch,'' Royal Mail spokesman James Eadie said this week. ''We're talking to retailers about what volumes they expect, and what they expect from us, so that we can put the logistics in place to deliver on the date of issue.''
More than 500,000 advance order copies of the sixth adventure, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince were delivered on July 16, 2005, in an operation that required some 150 additional trucks ferrying books to around 1,400 delivery offices across Britain.
While the number represents only a fraction of the 80 million items the Royal Mail delivers daily, the security -- and secrecy -- surrounding the work mean the books have to spend as little time as possible on warehouse floors, complicating their distribution. The 652-page Half-Blood Prince weighed in at just under 2.2 pounds, forcing postal workers into vans to avoid overloading their carrier bags.
Amazon's British Web site already lists Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows as its No. 1 book, based on advance orders.

Harry Potter's arch enemy, Lord Voldemort, is the odds-on favourite to kill off the famous boy wizard in the final instalment of the series. Bookmaker William Hill said Potter punters are throwing their weight behind Voldemort - and even Harry himself - to bring about the demise of the schoolboy. The revelation comes just days after the name of JK Rowling's long-awaited seventh book was revealed as Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows. Now that the title is in the open, the bookie said Potter fans have switched their attention to the question of who might kill the popular magical hero. Multi-millionaire Rowling recently hinted that two characters are expected to die in the finale - and Harry himself might not survive. William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams said of the recent betting trends: "JK mentioned that Harry might be killed off and the general consensus seems to be that Harry is the final Horcrux and to ensure that Voldemort dies he will need to be sacrificed." Other contenders to kill Harry included Professor Snape at 5-2, Draco Malfroy at 6-1, Ron Weasley at 6-1 and Hermione Granger at 6-1. He added: "Most of the early money has been for Harry, who has been cut from 10/1 to 6/1.Voldemort remains the odds-on favourite." SNAPE? A DOUBLE MURDERER? no. not mai sevvy. and lol @ the bulge in snape's pants.

Bah! Taking a look at how the Royal Mail currently run their operations, I think they should employ all those extra vans and services anyway - everything is always late or missing or messed up somehow. They're a crap service. At least they're being decent to the Harry fans!
And I am sooooooo going to ingore that shizzle about the bets against Harry, Hermione, Ron and Snape! Snape is going to be redeemed in the 7th book (JK has already said), and there is no way Harry's two back up singers will die, it just won't happen.
And Harry himself? JK is saying Harry may die to wind people up and get the gossip going - she has a sense of humour!
I've said it before. I will place real money that Harry lives!!!
That Rickman interview was seeeeexy. He was also talking about his film 'Snow Cake', which I was trying to buy without realising it wasn't coming out until this year (2007).
And on that note: HAPPY NEW YEAR!

That's all a bit moronic really. I'm assuming that you need a HD tele to watch HD DVDs? No one has started paying attention to HD yet - no one wants it because its too expensive for what it is. I reckon all this 'extra' sharpness or whatever is just psychological. If you're paying £500-1000 for something then I reckon you'd do everything in your power to believe you were actually seeing brighter colours...
