Algernon stood up from his desk, pulling his wand out of his pocket. "Now, now, settle down, everyone, and we'll begin. Oh, and I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the assignment so much," he told Helia with a smile.
He flicked his wand, sending one of the charts onto each of the student's desks. "Today we will be learning about the basics of Numerology. This is different from other forms of Divination, because it isnt about divining the future, it's about discovering yourself. Now, we'll use the charts later. For now, all I want you to do it discover the number value of your own name. You do this by adding up all the values of the letters in your own name, and, if the result is more than one digit, adding those numbers together in turn until you have only one digit. For example--" With another swish of his wand a chalk board appeared in mid-air, along with a piece of chalk which quickly scawled the name 'Algernon.'
Professor Moncrieff took the chalk from the air, scribbling on it as he spoke. "So, A is 1," he scribbled a 1 under the A, "And l is 12, g is 7, e is 5, r is 18, n is 14, o is 15, and finally n is 14. Together those add up to..." he paused for a moment, adding the numbers in his head, "86! and since that's two digits, 8 plus 6 equals 14, and 1 plus 4 equals 5, so my number is five. I want each of you to figure out your number now, for your full first name, no nicknames, and then I'll tell you what they mean."

Lauretta did the math out in her head and re-did it to make sure it was right on a piece of parchment. "My number is eight Professor" she states.

She began scribbling on her piece of paper, 'H is eight, E is five, L is twelve, I is nine, and A is one... thirty-five! So three plus five is eight... Funny, my end number is the same as the first letter in my name.' she thought as she tallied up the numbers.

"I came up with eight, which is kind of interesting because eight is the number for H also which is the first letter in my name," she said holding up her paper so L.C. could see.

" That's awesome" L.C stated as she looked over Halo's work. "So how many people do you think are going to be late?" she questioned.

She looked around at the half-full classroom. "I think everyone's here, just being very quiet." she smiled at a few of her friends then looked back at the Professor, hoping that he would explain about what the numbers meant soon.

Alana wrote down the numbers and quickly added them up. She came up with 26. "Professor, my number is twenty-six" she said.

"Umm, Professor, why is it that all our numbers are eight?" she thought it was unusually coincidental, even for this school, that something that is supposed tell you specifically about yourself would end up being the same for three very different people.

"That does seem strange" Alana commented. "Any particular reason for this Professor Moncrieff?"

"Yeah, that's kind of riddikulus. I mean, same class, same numbers. Is this thing fixed?" L.C questioned her teacher.

Carrie was sat near the back of the classroom and began working out her own number value for her name. Hmm, So C is 3 plus A is 1 and the two R's which is 36.. so 40 so far.. plus the 9 for I and the 5 for E, is 54! So 5 plus 4 equals 9!
She listened to the class talking and their comments about all having eight. 'Well, seeing as I've got nine and the Professor got five, I think its all just a coincidence, whether that means anything you're have to ask Professor Moncrieff-' She commented, directing it to towards LC who had suggested it was fixed.

Algernon forrowed his brow. It was a strange coincidence that the first three students had gotten 8... "Well, let's see here. Lauretta... 12, 1, 21, 18, 5, 20, 20, and 1, so that's 98, 17, 8, so that's right. Helia is 8, 5, 12, 9, 1, so 35, 8 and Alana is 1, 12, 1, 14, 1 so she's 29, and that's 7! So, really only two of you are eights. Alana must have gotten turned around somewhere. And just to check... Carrie, 3, 1, 18, 18, 9, 5, that's 54, yes, 9 is correct. So, you see, it isn't fixed. Going simply by your first names, it seems that Ms. Mericcini and Ms. Ollivander simply have the same personality type. Of course, if you take into account the entire name, which will give you a more in-debth reading, it may be different."
