Carrie was lying down under one of the small willow trees of the lake with her cheek resting clumsily on her hand, as her eyelids slowly drooped more and more. She was supposed to be perfecting her Banishing Charm and was finding it highly boring. It wasn't that she couldn't perform the spell - oh no, she could banish an object in an instant.. in fact that was the problem.. she would banish it a bit too instantly. Even now, when she had been specifically told to practice her control, she swished her wand here and there with no care as she simulataneously yawned. Her books were rapidly sent off in seemingly random directions.. it was just a shame she hadn't noticed the approaching person sooner, she could of saved them a few bruises.

Thom mooched along the shore, his brow furrowed in concentration as he scanned the thick, swaying grass. He was looking for the remains of his Comet Two Sixty, his beloved broom that had shattered to pieces only a few days ago. He had only just got round to searching for it, and it seemed the night creatures of Hogwarts had already carried them off. In one hand he held only a piece - the end of the handle. "Whoa!" Thom stopped abruptly, almost tripping on the Gryffindor in the grass.

The yell caught Carrie by surprise as she felt something brush against her, and the fact that she had been half asleep didn't help her nerves. The Gryffindor had scoffed at all the recent rumours of a very active Hogwarts squid but now wasn't so sure. She jumped back up into a sitting position, before stopping mid motion. Squids don't yell. Unable to suppress a grin at her own stupid reaction, she turned to face the new arrival with a welcoming expression. 'Uh, sorry about that..' She said with a slight frown. Lying hidden in long, thick grass had seemed such a good idea at the time..

Thom placed an hand on his heart. "You really scared me." he replied, rasing his eyebrows. "What are you doing? Aren't you supposed to be in a lesson?" he looked at the fifth year.

'Banishing charms.' Carrie stated with a roll of her eyes as if it explained the situation entirely. 'Not exactly my best spell at the moment.' She continued, standing up to retrieve all the banished books. 'Seems Hogwarts will only except two broken windows in one day.' The Gryffindor added with a slight smirk as she remembered the reaction of the Charms teacher at the second breakage. Carrie knew that all she needed to do was concentrate, and before speaking again she raised her wand with determination, and moments later sent a small stone banishing towards the lake where it gracefully skimmed the surface. She turned to the Hufflepuff again, looking slightly more satisfied. 'I'm Carrie by the way.' She added with a smile, as she reseated herself.

Thom nodded. "Hi, Carrie. I'm Thom." he raised an awkward hand. "I was wondering what all those boards were doing up on the Great Hall windows. I'm suprised someone has magicked them better." he looked towards the castle, the Great Hall looking more like a vandalised church than the repsected center of Hogwarts. "What have you been banishing anyway? I swore I saw a book flying up the moving stairs not twenty minutes ago!" he laughed.

Carrie went to receive Thom's extended arm, before giving a slight laugh. 'I wouldn't be surprised if that was me.' She said, referring to the flying book. 'Afterall, my main victim has conveniently been my Charms text.' She continued, with a slightly amused expression on her face. 'So, what brings you to the lake?' The Gryffindor asked, wondering if free periods were as fun as they sound.

Thom shook her hand gently. "The other day... my broom got smashed up around here." he glanced at the culprit, a large rock in the middle of shore. "Just collecting the pieces, I suppose. Sentimental rubbish, I know, but it was my mum's..." he showered her the handle, the faded gold lettering of the Comet Two Sixty catching the sun. "I reckon I should just buy I new one, but I don't know what to get."

Carrie glanced at the broken handle of the broom with a slight flinch. 'Ouch. How did that happen?' It was in a sorry state meaning one hell of a crash. 'Need some help finding the pieces?' She asked, understanding the sentimental value, with herself treasuring her own mother's old book. 'And as for finding a new one, you could ask Professor Mandrake.' She suggested. 'He knows what he's talking about, especially as he makes his own brooms.' The Gryffindor had seen one of his models previously.. they were quick, easy to control and light.. perfect for quidditch.

Thom smiled gratefully as he bashed back some tall grass, peering down between the stalks. He frowned. There was nothing here either. "It's a really long story," he said to her. "Lets just say it involved a couple of portals and a lot of lethifolds." he laughed in a disheartened way. "You know, I expect it's been carried off or something. Maybe I should just get a new one and not tell mum..."
The Hufflepuff thought of Carrie's suggeston of going to Mandrake, but had always found the professor to be a little too mad and eccentric to really communicate with. His wild appearance was bad enough. "We could go into Hogsmede and have a gander at that second hand broom shop? You could help me test a few up at the shrieking shack." he said eagerly.

'A couple of portals and a lot of lethifolds?' Carrie raised her eyebrows and smirked slightly. 'Here I was just thinking it was a quidditch practice accident..' She peered down in the long grass below, and had to admit it was pretty unlikely that Thom would be able to find many more pieces.. she was sure there would be more than one creature who would have found the fragments useful.
Carrie gained an amused expression, as she noticed Thom looking rather unenthusiastic about the idea of talking to the flying teacher. She couldn't blame him, there were quite a few others who were somewhat intimidated by him. 'Sounds great.' She said in reply to the Hogsmede suggestion, for afterall Carrie would take up any excuse to have a fly.

Thom smiled, pleased. "Excellent!" he beamed at the prospect of a new racing room. "Meet me in Hogsmede in an hour. I'll just need to go get some money. I haven't been the the shack in ages, this'll be great..." he said, his voice fading off into the distance as he bolted away from the shore.
(( I'll go make a new thread in Hogsmede should I? ))

(( Yes please.. ))
Before Carrie could even say See you later, the Hufflepuff had eagerly bounded away from the shore up to the castle. The Gryffindor had never been to the shrieking shack.. never mind going to fly in it. This should be good. She thought to herself, before making her way across the grass to head for the castle entrance.
