As the Protego spell is a shield charm, it's main use, obviously, is to shield wizards (and witches) from various spells. Once the spells hit the shield, they are reflected back to the original castor. The Protego spell can come in very handy when taking part in a wizard's duel or shielding yourself in an attack. One of the many materials that the shield spell will work against is Muggle firearms. Not only does the Protego spell keep a wizard safe from minor hexes, charms and harmful spells, it can also be used to shield oneself from some Muggle weapons. In short, the Protego spell is a very useful one, that every Witch or Wizard should have knowledge of.
