Jac was one of the first to arrive in The Great Hall for breakfast that morning. She had not slept well and her headaches were slowly getting worse. She would have preferred giving breakfast a skip but her mother always said that it was the most important meal of the day. She would rather not argue with a nurse.
So Jac sat at her house table and put a few things on her plate. Bacon, sausages, tomatoes, toast and a small spoonful of baked beans. It was her usual breakfast but one thing was missing. Eggs. There was a plate of eggs near by but Jac ignored it and, in stead, played with the baked beans with her fork.

Carrie sat down at the Gryffindor table, and scratched the back of her head whilst giving a large yawn. Mornings were far too much effort in her opinion, but waking up with a horribly grumbling stomach needed to be resolved. Her eyes were slightly bleary, and her hair was certainly not flat at the back - but she didn't really care, as she had the lucky sort of knack of even when having the messiest hair, it still looked good and she had never been one for being particularly fussed about appearances.
Grabbing a slice of bread and a couple of sausages, she made herself a sandwich, and was just about to take a bite when she noticed the girl opposite her. Jac, she remembered to be her name, wasn't looking the happiest of people and seemed to be prodding her baked beans to death. 'Er, Are you alright?' Carrie asked, hoping her question would be welcomed.

Jac was surprised someone was talking to her. She looked up and saw it was Carrie. Jac's hair sprayed neon orange and her eyes turned grey. She tried to smile and answer Carries question. "Oh ..." she said and dropped her fork, "um ... yeah, I guess, just got a lot on my mind. That's all!"
In truth, irritated, angry, upset and a whole list of other emotions were what Jac was at that point but she didn't want to go into all that. She would rather eat her breakfast and ignore her feelings. She picked up her fork and began shoveling her baked beans into her mouth.

Carrie smiled as Jac's hair turned a shocking neon orange, probably representing her surprise at the Gryffindor talking to her. It there was one drawback to being a metamorphmagus in Jac's case, it was how it reveals your emotions - even those you are trying to hide. The other Gryffindor answered casually, though Carrie could see the dark shade of grey her eyes had gone and figured there was far more to it.
'Well, um, if you're sure.' Carrie replied, her concerned tone perhaps giving away how somewhat unconvinced she was. 'Doesn't it sometimes annoy you?' She began, taking the hint that Jac may just want to forget whatever was bothering her. 'How your emotions can almost be on show?' She guessed Jac had heard the questions all before, but it was a change of subject afterall, and Carrie was genuinely intrigued.

Jac was surprised at the question, as she always was at questions about her being a metamophmagus. Her hair shot it's surprised bubblegum blue. She regained herself and relaxed, her hair calming to a baby blue. Her eyes turned emerald green as she looked to Carrie's face.
"Well ..." she began, "having them on show is pretty annoying but it's normal, kind of. At least, I've been a metamophmagus all my life so I don't know anything else. Does that make sense?" She put down her fork and reached for her glass of pumpkin juice. And even despite her features always having changed at will it was still annoying.

Jac's features had already changed again, more calming colours replacing the initial surprised ones. 'Yeah it does.' Carrie began, picking up her goblet of pumpkin juice and taking a large sip. 'I guess I only think I would find annoying because I'm so use to being able to hide my true feelings.' She smirked at the thought of how utterly embarrassing it would be if she had the power - she would never be able to talk to any guy she liked again.
'Does it run in the family then?' She continued conversationally, before finally taking a bite of her breakfast. She hoped Jac wouldn't be offended by the continuing questions. 'The only thing thats I've got from mine is uncontrollable hair.' She said rolling her eyes, though actually in truth loving the inherited feature.

Jac thought about the question for a moment, munching on her piece of toast. She was becoming used to talking about this particular subject with Carrie so her hair turned it's normal black. But her eyes still shone emerald green as she thought about who else in her family had this gift.
She cocked her head and smiled. "Great Uncle Henry could change his height but none, well," she added, "that I know of, have ever been as 'advanced' as I am. It's kinda cool actually, being the first full blown metamophmagus in the family. But, as you've noticed, it has got it's draw-backs."

Carrie listened to Jac and started to wonder where on earth Metamorphmagi got their power from. She knew they were born with it, but as the other Gryffindor had shown - it didn't necessarily run in the family. Perhaps it was to do with genetics, and some wizards gained the talent just like they gained the ability to do magic. Either way, she wasn't going to find out any time soon and gave a slight shrug.
'I think the draw-backs are worth it though.' Carrie decided with a small smile. 'It's a pretty amazing talent you've got yourself.' She added, realising that one of her main faults was being very shy when it came to revealing feelings or telling people her problems.. she kept it all bottled up inside, and never got anywhere with them. Having your appearance to tell your story for you could come quite handy.

Jac nodded in furious agreement and swallowed hard on her bit of toast. "Hmm," she mumbled, "but, and I'm probably going to find something wrong with everything you find interesting, people tend to misinterprate everything and I do get rather annoyed, which doesn't help!"
Jac smiled at Carrie. "Though," she admitted, "it is actually rather cool! And it also helps me be more open with my feelings, which helps. It might not sound like it but it actually does help." She snorted as she remembered fights she had had with her mother about lying about how she felt. "It really does help!"

'Yeah, but misinterpreting emotions happens all the time - Metamorphmagus or not.' Carrie couldn't begin to count when someone wrongly thought she was upset, angry.. annoyed.. 'But I see what you mean, probably just happens more with you.'
The Gryffindor took another bite of her sandwich and smiled as Jac mentioned her power being a help. 'I'm sorry I've been asking all these questions.' She realised that they may not have been welcomed particularly. 'My pathetic attempt at making conversation.' She explained, giving a slight laugh before peering at the hall clock - her eyes widened slightly. 'I've got to go.' Carrie said briskly. 'I'll be seeing you with Quidditch no doubt, so talk to you soon.' She grabbed her bag, gave Jac a quick smile, and hurried out of the hall.. she dreaded to think what would happen if she was late.
