For some reason, Carolanne couldn't fall asleep. It was quarter past two in the morning and she was laying down on the couch in front of the dying fire. In her left hand she held a picture of three year old Laney and her father and in the right was the last letter her father had written days before he died. She read it over and over again until tears fell from her eyes.
My Dearest Carolanne,
If you are reading this, my time on Earth and with you has expired. You won't be old enough to understand it but know that I love you and Mommy very much. It breaks my heart to leave you so soon, but my body can't take much more. The doctors say I won't live past the end of the week.
Even if you can't remember my face, keep me in your heart forever. Remember our trips to the best of your ability and don't let anyone stop you from becoming the beautiful young woman I know you will be. Know that I lived for you and now am dying for you. Keep Mommy safe and make her happy anytime she cries. Be my little angel and stay out of trouble.
Butterfly kisses to my Everything. Love you for always,
Daddy
An hour later, Laney's body tired of crying and eventually tired itself out. She turned on her side facing the fire and closed her puffy tear-stained eyes. Next thing she knew, the morning light was shining in and blinding her. Dropping the letter and picture, she rubbed her eyes and sat up.

Cristian woke up early due to the light from the windows pouring in and making his face hot aswell as inside his eyelights bright white. He looked around and everyone else was still asleep. He could never get back to sleep once he woke up, so he decided to go and sit by the fire. He was wearing his pj bottoms and that was it. He wiped his face and patted down the dorm stairs into the common room to see a body on the floor. He rubbed his sleepy eyes and noticed it was Laney. He rushed over. "Hey, What's the matter?" he said putting his hand on her shoulder and kneeling next to her.

Carolanne looked up at Cristian lazily then turned her head towards the couch. Ouch, she must've rolled off. SHe rubbed her eyes and shook her head, "I must've dozed off," she said pulling her elastic band out and letting her hair fall loose past her shoulders. She was extremely warm now. It wasn't a smart idea to wear her black fleece pajama pants and a red long sleeve shrit to bed near the end of summer. Carolanne pushed up her sleeves to her elbows and gave a yawn. Sleeping on the couch or the floor wasn't exactly sleeping.
She looked up at Cristian and couldn't help but smile,"Morning," she said to him. Looking around her, she found the letter and picture, grabbed them and placed them on her lap.

He smiled at her and gave her a morning kiss on her forehead. "I'm guessing you didn't sleep well?" he said, sitting on the sofa and beckoned her to sit next to him. Once she did he pulled her legs up so they were on his lap.

Laney sighed as she got comfortable on the couch with Cristian, "Not at all," she answered him, "I tried but I ended up here anyway," she said motioning to the couch. Carolanne put the letter and picture on the edge of the couch by her head, "Did you know that my Dad was a Ravenclaw when he attended Hogwarts? My mom went to Beauxbaton's naturally," she said with a smile.

Cristian smiled. "I bet you miss your mom huh?" he sighed. He hoped to have a real family someday, one of his own. He smiled again at Laney as he thought about it.

Carolanne shook her head, "No, my mom I can see whenever I want. It's my dad I miss. The worst part is sometimes I forget what he looks like," she said, sitting herself up. Laney sighed then layed back down, this time placing her head on Cristian's lap. She stared at the fire, "Do you know what your parents were like?" she asked him.

As she put her head in his lap, he stroked her hair gently. When she asked about his parents, all he'd ever had as evidence of them was a picture of his mother. He had an image in his mind of what his father looked like, but it wasn't real. "Not really, I have a photo of my mother, but that's all i've ever seen of them. I always take it everywhere with me. It's up next to my bed" he replied to her.

Carolanne closed her eyes. It was comforting being with Cristian, "I'm sure they loved you very much," she whispered. Laney was sure of it. What mother didn't love her child? She didn't know alot about Cristian's situation and all she had to go on where dreams about a perfect family but she in her heart, she was positive that his Parents loved him just as much as Laney's father loved her.
Laney noticed a string hanging off of Cristian's pants near the knee. She grabbed it and started to play with it. Little things like that amused the girl and no one was ever sure why.

Cristian carried on stroking her hair, and let his fingers trail to her neck. He sat in silence for a moment. "I'm sure they did. I mean, the woman who's taken me from each foster home told me that they were probably murdered. I'm not sure what's gone on. I don't even know where they're buried" he sighed. This probably hurt him the most, they wouldn't tell him any details, and he just wanted to know what they were like and what his father looked like. He always thought he looked more like his father, but had his mother's eyes.

Carolanne listened as he explained what he knew. She felt bad that they wouldn't even tell him where they were buried, "Maybe she'll tell you once you're done with school," she suggested. She didn't know anything about being in a foster home so she couldn't be certain. "I can help you find out," she said turning her head slightly so she could look up at him, "Of course, it'd have to wait until Christmas break or even Summer, but I don't think it's fair that you can't even see them now," she said giving him a comforting smile.

Cristian gave a slight smirk. "No, it's alright, I've tried loads of times. They're really stubborn about it" he said as he put his arm over her shoulder.

Laney gave him a serious face, "It's not fair what they're doing to you, Cristian. You have a right to know. If someone refused to tell me where my father was buried, I'd be angry," she said staring up at him from his lap. With a sigh, she poked his abdomen, "You have a right to know your parents," she said softly.

"I know" he sighed as she poked him. "I'll concentrate on it more once i've left school, I can't get caught up in all that drama right now with the exams and everything" he said, going back to stroking her hair once more.

Carolanne sighed, "Alright. School does come first, I suppose," she said giving him a smile. Laney turned so she was facing the fire once more. She watched the flames leap around in the fireplace. Laney made the decision to get the location of Cristian's parents out of that horrid woman if it was the last thing she did.
