“What do you mean you have no cake?” Girty stared at the house elves in total disbelief. This was the kitchens of Hogwarts right? This was the place where the best food in the whole of Britain was made right? “You last sods!” With a small grumble the Hufflepuff turned on her heel and stomped away from the slightly drunken elves that sat by the fire. Today at not been a good day for Girty, in fact it just had not been a good week. After having to deal with a love potion struck brother and then it being a full moon she really could have done with a sugar rush and lots and lots of cake. Oh well, there was nothing else for it, she would just have to go and spend some cash in Hogsmeade.
Outside the weather was not what you would exactly call pleasant but then it was not raining and for Girty that was a big bonus. So as the Hufflepuff wondered down the cobbled streets of Hogsmeade she knew exactly where she was going to for fill her craving. Tempest Treats.
As she pushed open the door to the small shop straight away the glorious smell of freshly baked cakes and bread filled her nostrils. It was almost as welcoming as the smell of a raw steak; she would defiantly have to stop by Warren’s later for a bit of meat…but for now it was cake time. However it was not as simple as that as the verity of choice that was available simply made it impossible to just walk in and buy a cake as you had the painful task of having to make a decision.

It was the end of another day and Ash was cleaning up and getting ready to close shop. Jen was somewhere in the back with a new shipment that had just come in and Ash's shift was just about over.
"Jen, I'm heading out. I'll be back later!" he wasn't sure but though he heard a muffled acknowledgement coming from the back. Opening the door, Ash locked it from the inside and stepped out, closing it firmly behind him. Finally, the day was over.
Walking along the streets of Hogsmeade he hummed to himself. Looking in the windows of the shops, he was not surprised to hear his stomach give a loud rumble. He hadn't eaten much that day, and apparently his stomach was making that fact known!
Hmm... his tastebuds seemed to be saying something too. Sweet. They wanted something sweet. Cakes, cookies, pastries... They wanted....
Ah ha! Ash spotted the sign above the little bakery. Tempest Treats. Perfect. Stepping inside the door, the raven-haired boy was overwhelmed by the sight and mouth-watering smell of cakes, cookies, muffins, fresh-baked bread... and any other sort of pastry you could imagine. Talk about a sensory overload!
Stepping further into the shop, and looking around, he got a very pleasant surprise. "Girty!" he cried happily upon seeing his friend.

Girty was studying a particularly very chocolate looking cookie, her mouth was hanging open and it was a mystery to her how a small trail of drool was not coming from her mouth. Thank Merlin it had not been as it would have been a rather nasty shock for the new customer who had entered the shop. At first the Hufflepuff did not look up, there was no point really but also she was too hypnotised by that particular cookie and the chances where that she would never have looked away from it had it not been for someone shouting out her name. At first, and Girty being Girty, she thought that it was the cookie saying her name. It would not have been the first time that food had talked to her (that was a very long story) but finally after a few seconds she realised that she knew the voice and it most certainly did not belong to the cookie.
Straightening her back Girty turned around slowly and her dark brown eyes landed on the tall, slim figure of Ashton Laurent. A small coy smile spread across her pale face as she folded her arms and leaned back slightly on her left leg. “Well well, look whose back in town.” Her voice was slightly bitter and as her eyes darted all over the ex-Ravenclaw inspecting every inch of him. “Nice to see you have finally decided to grace us with your presence again Ash. Was France not everything it was cracked up to be?”
Normally Girty would not have been so mean to her friend, as in reality that is what Ash was. They had always been there for each other and this turn around from Girty was even surprising the more moral side of her. But recently Miss Hubbles had been settling into a habit of taking small things personally and here, stood right in front of her was someone who she could not help but call a ‘quitter’. Ash had run away from his problems, he did not stand up and fight, he did not talk them through with her he just ran…maybe it was actually envy she was feeling, envy that people could run away from their problems, escape to another country to help them find themselves. She was cursed, the thing she wanted to run away from would end up going with her, for Girty there was no running away.

Ash stared at Girty in surprise. Why was she acting so hostile? Was it something he said? Something he did? "Girty, are you okay?" he asked his friend worriedly. This wasn't like her. Girty wasn't a mean person. Wait... the Dark Magic that was attacking the school. Apparently it made people's personalities change. Made them do and say things they normally wouldn't. Was that what was happening to Girty Hubbles?
Ash knew he should feel upset and hurt by Girty's attitude. But how could he? It wasn't her fault. Besides, if there was one thing Ash had learned in France, it was that no matter how hard you try, there is always going to be someone to try and bring you down, and that instead of letting it bother you, you should just forget about it. But Ash knew, he knew Girty would never intentionally hurt him. How could she? She was one of his closest friends.
Instead, Ash leaned in and gave Girty a small but heartfelt hug and smiled at his Hufflepuff friend. "How have you been?" he asked, it was a stupid question really. She was obviously stressed about something. But Ash knew that the real Girty, the Girty who was one of his best friends and always would be, the Girty he knew, his Girty was in there somewhere. And he was going to help her any way he could.

The bitterness of Girty’s words still lingered in her mouth as she looked on at Ash, the smell of the baked goods that at first smelt so appealing was now as appetising as smelling burnt bread. The frown that creased her brow has almost turned into a vindictive sneer when the ex-Ravenclaw in front of her asked if she was okay, of course she was not okay, what a stupid question to ask it had been many a year since Girty Hubbles was okay! But something made the Hufflepuff hold her tongue and stop herself from leaping on Ash, knocking him to the ground and ripping open his throat. It was the note of concern in his voice that proved he cared…there was someone out there who cared for her welfare.
With a small sigh the girls proud head dropt letting her long brown hair fall down over her face, hiding her shame and the pained expression on her face. She had just had a go at one of her oldest and closest friends. She should be thankful that this one had come back unlike the others, she should be thankful she still had Ash instead of treating him like a bit of rubbish. What a way to fall from grace and Girty could not even do that elegantly, she was falling through space thrashing around acting like a fool.
But the next thing she knew someone was holding onto her, saving her slightly and comforting her blow as she landed back to reality. Despite everything she had said Ash was still there for her and had not taken offence, clearly he had grown while she still acted like a seven year old. This was the friend she needed right now, the shoulder to cry on and the teddy bear to hug.
“I wish there was a simple answer to the question.” She grumbles as she wrapped her arms around Ash, pulling him into a tighter embrace. “Life seems to be spiralling out of control and all I can do is cling on for dear life and hope it takes me somewhere good.” Pushing herself away from her friend Girty tried in vain to offer him a small smile. “I am sorry about before. I-I am not sure what came over me.”

Ash sighed and placed a small kiss on Girty's head. "I wish I could help Girt. Just hang in there though. You'll make it."
He pulled back and smiled, hands still on her shoulder's. "You wanna hang out for a while? See if you feel better?"
He couldn't even imagine how hard it must be for Girty being the headmaster's little sister. Especially when that headmaster was said to be... not quite right in the head! Ash did read the Prophet occasionally. Of course he knew it was all bull, knowing Dan Hubbles personally. But still, you could not convince everyone.

It seemed that Ash was able and willing to forgive her for her small, heck who was she kidding, her rather large mood swings. He was very forgiving for a Ravenclaw; they were normally quick and witty and seeing at the moment Ravenclaw was not her favourite house. It was then when he kissed her lightly on the head she could do nothing but exhale deeply as she tried to let the rest of the rage escape her body. It was nice to know that Ash wanted to help her, at least someone did.
“Thanks mate.” She muttered as she nervously ran her hand through her brown hair, grumbling inwardly to herself as she could feel the greasy strands against her skin. She had not been looking after herself well recently and her hair had not seen shampoo soap suds in some time. “I am sure everything will come together again at some point.”
Looking away from her friend for a moment Girty’s brown eyes looked over the pastries and cakes that covered the counter in the shop. She had come in here looking for a sugar rush, now she felt like she needed a pick me up. And it seemed that Ash was going to offer her just that with the offer of hanging out for a bit, now that sounded like something she could do. But even out of habit she glanced down at her watch on her right arm (always had to be different) before giving a small nod. “I guess I can spare a few minutes for you Ash.”
With a small smile Girty flopped down at the small table that was present in the cake shop, she knew that maybe they should buy something to justify their presence but no one was bothering them yet so why not use the facilities! “So really Ash, how are you?”

Ash laughed as Girty looked at the watch on her right wrist (girl always had to be different) and said that she supposed she had a few minutes to spare. "A few? Well geeze Goldilocks, glad to see you could fit me into your busy schedule!" he teased. Goldilocks. His special name for her. Sort of an inside joke between the two.
Following Girty (or Goldilocks) the Ravenclaw Alum too sat down at the small table in the corner of the shop. "I've been alright I guess. Been working of course, talking to Laney. Trying to open up my own shop. Hopefully I'll be able to do that come next term."
He looked up at his friend with a small smile. "So, honestly Girt, how've you been doing? Anything I can do to help, just say the word." It was true too. Never let it be said that Ashton Jade Laurent was not a loyal friend. Anytime his friends needed him, he was there. And he was always on their side. Even if they wrong. And Merlin help the poor, foolish soul that dared insult or hurt the ones he loved!

Ash would have to be careful, although she had apologised for her previous outburst she still was a little tense and even as he, admittedly playfully, teased her the Hufflepuff could not help but raise her eyebrow and just stare at Ashton, her brown eyes showing her slight hint of disapproval although the small smile on her face confirmed she was not about the fly off the handle just yet. She did not dare trust herself to say anything though, so instead she kept her mouth shut and as her and Ashton sat at the small table Girty listened to his list of things that he had been doing. His first few activities did not strike much of an interest to her, they seemed rather mundane, and in fact it was only the final one that interested her.
“A shop?” She questioned. “Here in Hogsmeade I am guessing?”
Girty knew her friend well enough to know that she would not have to ask much more for him to tell her all about it. She just hoped this was not going to turn out to be one of his crazy ideas that did not work out, Ash seemed to have a habit of chasing his dreams and Girty just hated seeing him down when they did not plan out. That must have been something they had in common as Ash was now pushing for a answer from her, almost as if he was convinced she was not alright.
“Honestly? I have a brother who is an idiot, my best mates have vanished, I kissed Will, Alex left me, and I am now good friends with my worst enemy…” Girty broke off and shrugged. “How so you think things are going Ash?” Her voice was getting a little tense again and a vicious edge to her words was creeping in once more. “So unless you can turn back time then sorry mate their ain’t nothing you can do!”
