As Dan had been lying there in his hospital bed sipping on the energy drink from his sister’s hip flask the headmaster found it hard to block out the sounds of Vicky being sick next to him. The smell itself was particularly potent and he took the distinct step to breath through his mouth instead of his nose to avoid the need for a bucket himself. Thankfully the process of Vicky emptying the contents of her stomach did not last long and the sound of her wrenching faded away and luckily Josh was at had to clear away the sick.
Of course Dan was naturally concerned for Vicky as he would be for any member or staff but surprising or not the months of them being rather intimate had made him care that little bit more for her well being. It was then like he was watching a tennis match, his cool blue eyes flicking from Vicky to Josh in quick succession as he tried to piece together what might be wrong. It was clear that the healer had an idea and as soon as he asked that dreaded question Dan’s heart stopped beating.
The small whisper of ’no’ from Vicky was noting in comparison to the expletives and mass screaming that was being shouted in Dan’s head. He felt his whole body go ridged in shock as his wide eyes gaze was fixed upon Vicky. Oh things had just got a hell of a lot worse and he knew that his cool composure had been shattered; he truly did just look like a man who had been told his mistress was up the duff. What did this mean now for him and Dia? How could they go on now?
Maybe he should give her up, maybe after everything that he had put Dia through maybe he should be that loyal man that she always saw him as, maybe Dan Hubbles should look his wife in the eye and end it there and then. He could not bare think about all the pain he had put Dia through over the years, she did not deserve that; she did not deserve to be treated like a common bit of dirt. She was a strong, beautiful and noble woman who deserved better love. Dan loved Dia enough to want her happiness, he wanted her to be free once more and away from him and away from any more possible pain he could course. He was after all going to become a father for the first time to a woman who was not his wife, the mother of his child was going to be someone he did not care two hoots about. This was his punishment, his karma was being served to him on a very large spoon, heck it was a bulldozer full! He could not just stand there and watch Dia suffer along with him, but how the hell do you go up to your wife, the woman that you actually love and say ‘hey babe I think we need to end it cause I have got my bit on the side up duff. I will owl the divorce papers through in the morning. Oh and just so you know I was thinking of you all the time when doing the dirty.’
Not even Dan Hubbles could do that and as he lay there on the hospital bed, his mind spinning with this strange scenario that had started to play out he finally realised he was still holding his breath and with a small gasp for air almost as if he broke the water of the icy cold waters Dan snapped back into reality and his professional head was back on. Swinging his legs off the side of the bed he jumped down and wondered over towards Josh, gently laying an arm on the man’s shoulder.
“Are you sure about that diagnoses mate?” Dan’s face held no emotion, he was playing it like the cool clam boss who merely wanted to know how his employee was doing. “Cause otherwise I am going to have to start to arrange a replacement. We can not have a woman in her condition in the castle as it is at the moment. Far too dangerous and stress full.”
