Luna wander around outside on the border of the forbidden forest. Her long wavy hair had been badly braided into one long braid that went very far down her back. Little ends of hair stuck out here and there giving her a wild man look. As she walked along the edge of the forest, clutching a copy of her father's latest magazine, she looked into the forest. It was dark, but she could see the black shapes moving within. Her light dreamy eyes darted around trees seeing them moving about. She smiled, she knew they were playing.
Luna tucked a rather long piece of wispy hair behind her ear, trying not to disturb the wand she had placed up there. Luna walked along, slowly, looking into the forest. Her bag bounced against her leg as she walked. It was made from an old potato sack her father had found near the stream near their house. Luna had threaded braid yarn through a hole and worn it as a bag. She walked straight into the wooded area, looking straight ahead, her eye seemingly glazed over and happy smirk on her face.
Her radish earrings bounced as she entered a small clearing. A large black creature was face to face with her. "Good morning." she said in her high soft voice. The creature stomped the ground and snorted. "Don't get upset." She said in her flat voice. "I don't mean you harm." She smiled softly and reached in her bag. The animal got jumpy not understanding what she was doing. She pulled out a piece of raw meat and threw it on the ground in front of her. The animal cautiously sniffed it and nudged it with his nose. Obviously happy with the gift, he slurped it up. Luna stood there, hands at her side, head ed sideways starring at the creature. Feeling comfortable the black winged horse walked closer to her and nudged her for more meat. She laughed softly and lowly and reached back into her bag.

Maria wandered aimlessly around the forest. She had found herself staying outside of the castle a lot lately. Normally, she just stayed around the lake, but on this particular day, she had decided a trip to the forest would be nice.
When she finally reached a clearing, she noticed a girl with long blond hair standing with a black winged horse. Maria stopped and looked at the girl for a moment. The wand behind the ear and the radish earrings gave her away. Maria had heard of Loony Lovegood, but had never actually spoken to the girl, who was supposed to have been a bit nutty.
She stepped slowly into the clearing, not wanting to bother the creature that the girl was with. "Hello," she said in a gentle voice. She didn't want to startle the girl or the creature that had now turned to look at her.

Luna had heard the person walking towards her through the woods. She smiled at the horse and pet him softly. It didn't bother her that anyone was coming. Most likely they would see her petting nothing but air which would give them another reason to call her Loony. Luna didn't mind however, it wasn't their fault they didn't see a tragic death which would lead to the seeing the horses and understanding Luna a little more.
However, unlike any other time, a voice came from behind Luna. With no reaction Luna responded: "hello." She did not turn, but kept petting the horse. She smiled at him and he started to walk away, realizing that the unknown girl to also see him. Luna smiled and let him go. She finally turned to the girl behind her.
"Why can you see them?" Luna said knowingly in her high, lazy voice. Perhaps the girl didn't even know what she was seeing, but Luna was just curious.

Maria watched as the girl kept petting the horse. It Maria a moment to understand the girl's question. Then as she realized what she had done she sighed. She had never liked to talk about why she could see the thestrals. For her whole time at Hogwarts she had known what they were and had pretended not to be able to see them so no one would ask why.
She had been careless and realizing this Maria decided she had better be somewhat honest with the girl. She had never liked talking about her family and usually avoided it, but now it was unavoidable. "I...umm...I saw my uncle die when I was young," she explained lookind down at the ground hoping not to have to give details. It wasn't something she liked to remember, especially since it had been her aunt that had killed him, and she wasn't supposed to have been anywhere around when it happened. As far as anyone in her family knew, she was completely clueless as to what had happened.

"I'm sorry." Luna said softly and gently. She could tell that the girl was holding back, but that was her business. Luna wasn't one to get involved unless people let her in. She could care less other wise.
"It's ok that you can see them you know." Luna said comforting the girl. "I can see them too." Luna said with a smile, and then turned and walked closer to a smaller female that had seen the meat before. She reached into her bag and pulled out another thin slice. She looked back at the girl who was still watching her. "Would you like to come closer." She gestured gently to the horse. "They are very friendly. Like most misunderstood things, they have a very sweet demeanor."

Maria smiled at the girl as she told her that the horses were friendly. "No, it's okay," Maria said. She really didn't need the girl to apologize. "It's not that I can see them...It's why I can see them that bothers me," she explained walking over to stand beside the girl.
She noticed this girl had a very calm, rather dreamy demeanor. It was just so easy to feel comfortable around her. "Your Loony Luna Lovegood, aren't you?" Maria asked. She was always brutally honest, and figured the girl already knew what people called her. "But I'll call you Luna I promise," she assured Luna. "I'm Maria, by the way."

Luna smiled softly as the girl came up to join her. Her hand reached in her bag again and reappeared with another thin slice of meat. She handed it to the girl. With her own piece of meat, she coaxed the small black horse to her side. Petting it softly she listened to the girl.
"I don't mind that they call me 'loony.'" Luna said to Maria. Luna knew that most people who were nice to her didn't understand why it didn't bother her. However it didn't. Luna knew that the other students thought she was odd, but Luna accepted it. "I suppose every great witch or wizard was called 'loony' at some point or another. Even he-who-must-not-be-named way back." Luna said with a smile.
"Is there a reason you decided to take a walk in the forest today Maria?" Luna said, with curious carelessness.

Maria took the piece of meat from Luna, but quickly threw it over to the edge of the clearing where a particularly timid thestral was standing. She smiled at the girl as she said she didn't mind what other people called her. That was an admirable quality in someone.
"Why did I come to the forest?" Maria said copying the girl as she thought about the answer. "No reason in particular. I just haven't been spending much time in the castle lately, and was getting rather bored of going to the lake so often." Luna's voice made Maria feel as though she were no longer herself as though nothing was important. And Maria was enjoying that feeling. This girl seemed to be so carefree.

"Did you know that the giant squid really isn't a giant squid." Luna said, Maria's mention of the lake caused the fact to pop into her mind. "My father once dove down into the lake and saw that it was really just a giant octopus." Luna said, petting the horse who was now nuzzling her shoulder.
"It seemed very offended that people thought it was a squid. My father said that squids and octopuses don't get along very well. Sort of like how peanut butter and jelly explode when put together in a sandwich."

Maria couldn't help but laugh at what the girl had said. She understood now exactly why people treated Luna the way they did. "Really?" she said when she had finally stopped laughing. "Well that it very interesting information." She hesitated for a moment before continuing.
"Although I do believe that peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are a very common food, so I don't see how that would be so if they exploded." She knew it was probably useless to tell Luna this, but it didn't matter she still felt the need to say it. Luna would be someone who it was fun to be around. Maria could already see that.

Luna just shrugged her shoulders. She believed in letting everyone believe what they wanted to believe. Although she knew that girl was insane to think that PB&J's didn't explode, she wasn't going to call her out on it.
Luna turned and started walking along a path that had formed from her many retreats down to the grove. She knew the girl would follow, or at least she hoped she would.
"I wonder what time it is." Luna said randomly out of no where. She kept walking, but stopped at a fallen log. They were a good ways into the forest now. She sat down, closing her bag so the smell of meat didn't attract any more Thestrals. She then leaned forward folding herself in half, and looked through her legs backwards and upside down. She stayed like this for a while.

Maria followed Luna without a second thought. She had nothing better to do with her time, and this girl was certainly entertaining. "I don't," Maria responded looking up at the sky as she walked.
When she stopped and looked around, Maria saw Luna doing something very peculiar. The girl was sitting, folded in half, and looking through her legs. Maria smiled as she sat down next to the girl. "Umm...Luna, what, exactly are you doing?" she asked in an amused voice.

Luna sat up straight. Her bright eyes looked right into Maria's. Luna smiled suddenly. Sher then folded herself up again with out a word. Her hair fell over her head and her wand tilted dangerously on her ear threatening to fall. Luna concentrated on the upside down-ness of her position. She squinted, and blinked. At last she sighed.
Popping up again, she remembered Maria's question. "Oh, Looking for Wetterspops of course." Luna said, turning upside down again. In a rather muffled voice, she continued, "You can only see them if you're upside down. I heard them splooshing from over in the grove." And again she popped up. "Alas, we've missed them." She shrugged her shoulders. "Have you ever seen a Wetterspop?"

Maria looked strangely at Luna as at first she ignored the question. However, when she finally answered though Maria couldn't help but smile. This girl really did believe some crazy things. When Luna asked her a question, Maria decided to go along with it.
"Oh yes that is terribly sad. I would have so loved to see them. No, Luna, I've never seen a Wetterspop," she said with a slight smile. "Have you?" she asked looking curiously at Luna. She was certain the girl hadn't but with someone like Luna you could never really know until you asked.

"Of course not!" Luna said fantastically. "Why would you think I have?" she asked her eyebrows raised. Luna immediately got up and walked toward the grounds. The sun was setting and the already shady area was growing increasingly dark. Luna knew better than to be in the forest when it was dark.
She kept silent. She was surprised by the new friend she had made. She was sure that the girl was going to return to her room later that night and tell all of her friends how she met the famous Loony in person. Luna could really care less, however.
Luna wasn't used to company, really ever. she didn't know how to conduct herself, scratching behind her ear as she walked. She stayed silent, not being able to create a decent conversation. If the girl cared enough, she would think of something. Otherwise she would make an excuse and Luna would be left to wander back to the castle by herself.
