Because Dean is paranoid about people finding out about his HUGE crush on Professor Owen and so will go to any extreme to stop people from reading his mind...however in resurch for the lesson (being the true geek he is) it seemed rather intresting and from a muggle born background he is rather keen to explore all areas of magic!
