Carolanne had been dreading the common room since the moment Cristian had left the forest. Everyone was there, everyone she knew. Even after her and Maxi left the forest, she dare not go to bed. She was scared of Ashton, for once she didn't want to see him. Laney had slept in Hogsmeade that night. She didn't care if she got in trouble, it was better than the pain she'd see in Ash's eyes. The look of betrayal. She was his sister for Goodness sake!
Lane had skipped all her classes that day. She didn't want to run into anyone. Instead, she stayed in Honeydukes with Fay's mom all day helping her with the shop. At least she hadn't heard yet. It felt great to be free of stares for once, of course, that was until a few Hogwarts students wandered into the store.
Later that day, 24 hours after the whole event had occurred, she finally decided to be strong and face the facts. Besides, she needed new clothes' Laney couldn't possibly stay in the same ensemble forever... just wasn't healthy.
Walking into the common room wasn't what she had expected it to be. The room was completely deserted, the only noise was coming from the fire and the distant purrs of Ami. Laney gave a sigh of relief, at least she didn't have to deal for a little while longer.
Sitting on the couch, she picked up her kitten and cuddled her closer to her. "Amour, you're lucky you're just a cat and don't have to deal with the things we do. I did a bad thing... and I don't regret it." Carolanne sighed... she didn't even hear the common room door open behind her.

Ash entered the common room and stopped short. Laney was there. His bright blue eyes turned glacier-cold, and a cruel smirk found it's way onto his lips. "Well, well, well, if it isn't the little traitor." He snarled angrily, crossing his arms.

Carolanne was just ready to relax when a cold voice made the tiny hairs on the back of her neck stand up. The things running through the girls mind at the moment were enough to put a weak person into shock. Her stomach was in knots, her heart was pounding and she could feel the blood drain from her body. Oh, great. Laney Run... Find a rock and stay under there until you die! I can't, he's my brother. Carolanne turned her head and looked at her brother.
"Ashton," was all she could muster herself to say. She wanted to scream at him, wanted to cry on his shoulder, wanted him to comfort her and tell her she'd be alright. He wasn't the one to do that right now. She had betrayed him.
Even the coldness in his eyes didn't make her regret her decision, sure it made her question the way it had happened, but it didn't make her regret it. She wanted to turn away from him, she wanted to jump out the window, she wanted to... just be anywhere but there but she wouldn't allow it. She had to face him.

Ashton just glared, "Care to explain to me why a certain Cristian Martinez told me that he saw his girlfriend, who is also my sister, kissing my ex, even though I still have feelings for him?"

And there it was. The question she was afraid of, the answer she was scared to say. Not really. She stared at her brother for a while before she'd answer. Vera, Daniel... you can take me home now! She sighed, "Well..." Smooth, Lane. Real smooth. "I uh-" what did he want her to say? Ash, It wasn't what it looked like! Cristian really didn't see me kissing Maxi, I swear. It wasn't the truth, in fact, far from it. "I wasn't happy with Cristian. I didn't mean for it to happen, it just.. did," she explained.
Laney turned away from Ash and stared into the fire, "I felt trapped so I went to the forest to get away. Max, being the prefect that he was, just wanted to make sure whoever it was he saw run in there was alright. Neither of us expected it to be the other there. Then... It happened. I kissed Maxi."
She turned to her brother, a tear glistening in her eye. She wished he could just forgive her right then and there and hold her, but... it was never that easy. "I'm sorry for hurting you and Cris, I really am, but I'm not sorry for what I did. I know it makes me sound like a horrible person, a horrible sister but Ash! You had no idea what was running through my head," she said, that tear trailing down her cheek.

Ash laughed bitterly, "You didn't mean to hurt me? You knew I still loved him! You had the choice not to kiss him, didn't you!?" His voice rose with each word, the he sighed and ran a hand through his hiar. "I don't understand Laney. Why?"

Ash's bitter laugh made her wince. Ow! Laney was screaming inside, she needed air... she wasn't breathing. She did have the choice, she couldn't deny that but she wanted it. She wanted Maxi for a long time. Just lie, Laney lie! I have to tell him the truth! No, you don't. Tell him anything, say you were drugged, you were under a spell, just not the truth!
Laney decided to tell him the truth despite her hearts constant pleas. He'd never forgive her if she lied about it on top of it all. "I like Max, Ash. I've tried to get over my feelings, I really did. I even thought that Cris would help but he didn't either. I couldn't ignore what I felt for him. I couldn't ignore my heart."
Her body was shaking now. She didn't want to argue with Ash, she didn't want to fight with him. Carolanne needed her brother, she needed comfort. She needed... Max.

Ash could not believe his ears. "What? Laney! You know how I felt about him! I loved him!" He stopped, then gave another bitter laugh, "Actually, I should probably be thanking you. Now that you two have proved what cheating, lying, lowlifes you really are, you've made my desicion for me." He smirked cruelly, "You know, Cris is a really good kisser. Too bad I didn't steal him from you when I had the chance."

There it was again. That damn laugh! She wished he'd just hex her and get it over with. Maybe she'd feel a little better than. It wasn't until his next statement did she spin her head quickly in his direction. "Thanking me? What for?" her voice came out hurried and unsure. Her jaw dropped, "Wha- What? You kissed..." Carolanne shook her head.
What the hell was going on with this love square? She's getting yelled at for kissing Maxi, Ash's ex, when he was kissing on her ex. She just stared at him with no expression on her face. "Hey! This is not fair!" she said standing up, "Why am I getting yelled at? You did the same damn thing I did! You kissed my ex! What does that make you then? If you did the right thing, then I sure as hell did too!"

He was right. She never really did love Cristian like Ashton loved Maxi. Who was she kidding, she couldn't be mad at Ashton for kissing Cristian, it just wasn't her. Carolanne threw her hands up in the air, "You're right!" she yelled at him feeling a little defeated. She wasn't going to argue about love, she didn't even know the first thing about love... only that it was her cat's name.
Laney looked at her brother and smirked, "Well, Maxi isn't the worst kisser either," she said shaking her head. It was a bit awkward yet funny that she had said that. She didn't lie, Maxi was great. Stop thinking bout him! Laney sighed and sat back down on the couch. "What's going to happen?" she asked her brother.

Carolanne turned her head and looked back at Ashton, "As long as you can forgive me and still live with me, then I'll be happy," she said giving him a small smile. "I'd rather have an angry brother than no brother at all." Both Laney and Ash knew they couldn't live without eachother. Laney was Ash's support system as was Ash for Lane.

Ash smiled sadly, then did something that surprised him. He pulled his sister into a hug. "It's gonna be okay. We'll get through this. Remember our song? We'll do this together." He pulled back and smiled gently, "Remember Laney, always together."

When Ash had pulled her into a hug, she let her head fall on to his shoulder. That was all Laney needed right now, Ashton. Carolanne nodded. How could she not forget their song? When he pulled away from her, Lane looked up at him with saddened eyes, "What about Maxi? You're not going to be mad at him, are you? Please don't Ash. It wasn't his fault."
