The school had closed for the holidays and the two Conway children found themselves at Hogwarts for Christmas. This was a new experience for them both but Amara most of all didn't like it particularly much. Christmas was about being with your family and since going to Hogwarts it was the only time she got to see her cousins, aunts and uncles. She didn't mind so much not seeing her mother and father because she had seen them before coming to school.
Never the less, Amara didn't let it get her down. She still had her guitar and her trumpet and she had a warm bed and food. It meant she didn't have to worry about packing so that at least was something. So there she was, after dinner on Christmas Eve in the Great Hall with a large mug of hot chocolate and her guitar.
The students and staff who were still at school were few and after Amara had moved to the fire place many decided to stay a little while longer. Amara liked this and she was beginning to prefer it to being with her smelly family who had decided to go to Barbados without Marcus or herself. She looked around enquiringly at the people who were still there. They were sat on the table top, on the bench and, like her, on the floor. Brushing her fringe from her face, Mara asked, "any song requests?"
Though she knew people found her strange she was. Amara knew many songs and could play them a variety of ways. She didn't often get a chance to show off but she enjoyed having the opportunity to do so. Any chance she got she took full advantage of. She knew that situations like this could turn into a performance and as much as she loved that idea she wanted this to be interactive, with other people singing and even playing if they wanted. That would make the night more enjoyable and make the time fly.
