Ashton sighed as he watched grey clouds drift across a gloomy sky. It was winter, it was cold, and he really didn't care. So much had changed in the past year. He had changed, Maxi had changed. And he didn't think their relationship was going to survive. Normally, Ashton would've been heartbroken. But, Ashton wasn't normal. Not anymore. He was different. Instead of the warm, energetic, always ready for a good laugh, guy he had been last year; he was now cold, aloof, and a loner. Something had happened to Ashton McLane, but exactly what, was hard to tell.

Maria strolled around the lake. This had become the place she spent a large part of her time. On the cold, gloomy winter's day, Maria was completely relaxed being out here. The crisp air was refeshing despite the chill it had, and there was a silence in the air that could only be found in winter, when there were no other students about.
In the distance she saw what must be a person, but not many were out on the cold winter days especially when it was as gloomy a day as this one. As she got closer she saw a familiar face, someone she hadn't talked to in quite a while. He was different; she could tell. She didn't think that she had spoken to the boy any this term. What was going on with him? Walking over to him she greeted him in a soft voice, "Hello, Ashton."

Ashton looked up as he heard a girl's voice. It was Maria. A Hufflepuff. He gave a short, curt nod. "Maria." and went back to staring at the sky.

Maria just looked at Ashton for a few moments deciding what to say. What could she say? He didn't seem much up for talking, but she couldn't just stand there silently. Normally she would have, but not this time.
There was something completely different about this boy. He was definately changed, but why? "Are you alright, Ashton?" Maria asked with more curiousity than concern in her voice. She wasn't much for emotions of any sort, and often avoided such questions that could get emotional responses.

Ashton gave a short, harsh, humorless laugh at Maria's question. "I haven't talked to my boyfriend in weeks because he's too busy 'doing his duties' as a Prefect so he doesn't have time for me or his friends, and you have the gall to ask if I'm okay? Do I look okay?" Ash sighed, "I'm sorry Maria, I didn't mean to snap at you. I'm just frustrated. I don't know what's gotten into Maxi. But it's just really trying my patience."
