Ash sighed as he looked out across the lake, he had sent Maxi a note earlier that day requesting that Maxi meet him at the lake at four o'clock. It was now three-fifty and Maxi still hadn't showed. Ash stood, "Guess he's not coming." He looked back towards the castle, "I'll give him five more minutes, if he's not here, I'll assume he's not coming. Ash sat down to wait, trying to think of what he would say to Maxi. As he sat there, he thought of the fight his sister had told him about. Apparently Maxi and Jase, who turned out to be his half-brother had gotten into a fist fight on the lawns about a week ago. Fay had tried to stop them, and had been injured. Ash shook his head, when would all the damn fighting stop?

It had been Jase who had gotten the note, and since Jase wasnt Maxi's best friend, infact he was far from it, he had decided to give Maxi the note at five to four, leaving Maxi five minutes to get down to the lake. He didnt know why he was bothering, he was sick of fighting, he was sick of arguing. Luckily this was Maxi's last year so he wouldnt have to put up with it much longer. Once this year was through, Max was gone. Simple as.
He pulled on his white jacket with his scarf and began walking over the courtyard. What did Ash want with him. It had been a month since the Maxi and Laney scenario so Ash was leaving it a bit late. Maybe he wanted to tell Max to stay away from his sister, of course Max wouldnt listen, so it would be pointless. Or maybe he wanted to rub the fact Ash and Cris were together in Max's face. Like he needed anymore drama right now.
Between the love square and his brother, Maxi had enough problems to last him a lifetime. Besides the fact Rieko was blanking him too, she was probably annoyed at the fact Max let Jase wind him up but who knew? Reaching the spot on the lake, Ashton told Maxi to meet him. He sat down beside the dark haired boy and just looked outwards across the lake.
"Jase didnt give me the note until five to, Ash" Maxi told him, "Sorry im late" Sorry, that was a word Max was getting used to saying.

Ash heard foosteps behind him, then the familiar sound of Maxi's voice. He turned to see the other boy behind him. He smiled and stood up. "Hey Max. It's fine, Laney told me about the fight." Then Ash did something that surprised even him, he reached out and wrapped his arms around Maxi in a warm hug. Smilling, he leaned back. "So, how have you been doing lately?"

"I've been better"
Maxi laughed and ran a hand through his blonde hair. He was looking worn out lately due to the stress of everything going on. He hadnt expected the hug Ashton gave him, though surprisingly Max found comfort in it, as though things would work themselves out one day. He wasnt saying him and Ash were alright because they probably werent but the fact the two could stand here and hug one another like old times proved to Max that they could work things out.
"The fight between me and Jase was the last straw with me. It wouldnt have been that bad if it was just me and him, but Fay got hurt too and I cant forgive myself for that." Maxi told Ash, Max's usually full of life blue eyes were dull and rather icy. "I think Laney's been avoiding me too, though I dont blame her really. I was surprised when I got your note, Bray's been being really weird with me. In fact I think Fay was the only one who didnt take any form of side in the whole thing and she was the one hurt. How is that fair?"
Maxi sighed and leant his back against the tree, he was sure this wasnt what Ash asked him to meet him for. "So, what did you want to talk to me about?"

Ash sighed, "None of this makes sense does it? But hey, since when does life make sense?" He smiled, "Just wanted to talk." He sighed, "About you and Laney. And no, I'm not here to yell at you." He laughed lightly, "Trust me, if I was still mad, you would've known it by now!"

"No, it doesnt make sense."
Maxi sighed, weren't things supposed to get easier as you got older? Not harder? Things right now were a mess, but they were sorting through them, the only one he couldnt get his head around was Jase, and Maxi still had the bruises to prove it. His left eye was still blackened and his lip had a rather hefty cut running down it, making it painful to talk most of the time.
"I suppose if you were still mad, I'd deserve everything I got"
Which wasnt entirely true. Maxi hadnt asked for what happened to happen, it just did. He hadnt known how Lane felt for him, and once he did he didnt know what to do about it. He was sure if he had chosen not to go along with it, Ash would have been more angry at the fact he hurt his sister. The whole thing was messed up in itself, but even though Max wasnt showing it right now, he was happyish. He'd be happier if his brother wasnt around.
"I dont know what to say on the subject of me and Lane"

Ash nodded, "It's funny how you think things get easier as you get older, instead they get harder." He looked at Maxi's black eye, and split lip and frowned, "You look awful." He smiled slightly, "Well, this is awkward, because I don't know what to say either." He sighed, "Except, why? Why did you do it?"

"Thanks for pointing out the obvious Ash"
Maxi sighed as he put his hand conciously to his face. The bruises would fade but his pride had been damaged. He looked over the lake before looking back at Ash. Why? He had been asking himself that. Though why was one of those questions people found difficult to answer, Max was no exception.
"It just happened." Maxi sighed, running through the story again, "I dont know why. She just kissed me and I kissed her back. It happened quite quickly I dont know. It felt right though for some reason, it confused me a lot though."

Ash quriked a smile, "You're welcome." he teased. He sighed and nodded, "Yeah, I know. I guess my real question is, why have you been avoiding me?"((blegh, short. my muse has suddenly gone AWOL. yay. ))

"Im sorry Ash I thought it was for the best."
This was the truth, he thought it was better if he stayed out of Ashton's way, he didnt want to rub things in his face, Max knew he still had feelings for the blonde and he didnt want to hurt him anymore than he already had done. Laney and Max would probably end up being together, and he doubted Ash would be okay with that. Though, Max hadnt expected to feel for Laney. He always thought his feelings for her were more of a protective elder brother. Not that he felt anything close to being attracted to her. Okay so it was no secret Ashys sister was a beautiful girl, but Max never thought...
"I didnt want to hurt you, or Cris." Max looked down at the floor, this was the whole truth, "I didnt know what to do, I was put in a situation where I would end up hurting someone. Its just I ended up hurting Cris and you because Cris came along. Though if I could, I wouldnt have hurt either of you." He looked back to Ash with slightly saddened eyes, "That doesnt make what I did right, and I know that. I cant say why I did it, I dont know myself. Im not going to say im sorry for kissing her, because I would be lying and you dont deserve to be lied to. But I am sorry I hurt you. I never meant for that to happen."
This had been the whole truth, it had come from the blonde's heart. He couldnt remember the last time he had been this truthful. The more he spoke, the more he felt both pain, but yet lightened, as though finally talking to Ash about it was letting go of some of the frustration he was pented up inside of him. He wasnt sorry he kissed Laney, he wasnt sorry the two would end up being together. He was sorry he hurt people. He closed his eyes and leant his head back on the tree, sliding down it until he was sat down.

Ash sighed, "Maxi, you don't have to worry about that. Yes, it did hurt. But, it doesn't anymore. What hurts now is you thinking that I'm not okay with this and deciding that avoiding me is the best answer." He sat down next to Maxi, "Because avoiding each other won't solve anything." He sighed again, "And... I have something to tell you. Something I should have told you a long time ago. Remember when we met in Hogsmeade, and you said that you weren't giving up until you proved to me that you still loved me? Well, that's when I made the decision that I was going to fight for you. But, the more I tried, the more I realized, that my feelings for you weren't the same. I just wasn't in love with you anymore. I mean, I still love you, just not in that way." He sighed, "I was starting to fall in love with Cris, and so I decided that I had to move on. And I'm sorry I never told you."

How ironic.
"This is messed up, isnt it?"
Maxi opened his eyes and looked at Ash, did this mean that the two of them were okay now? Maybe avoiding Ash wasnt the best idea he'd ever had but at that point it seemed like there was no other alternative. He nodded when Ash said avoiding him wouldnt solve anything, he knew he was right. The way Max felt for Ash, he realised wasnt love. Max still loved Ash, but as a friend, they had grown out of the whole love thing with eachother. And of course, Maxi knew all about Cris and Ash, that had been another rumour flying around.
"That's because at that point I did still love you," Maxi told him, "Though this started happening and then Laney and then I just didnt anymore."
Maxi sighed, Ash knew Max still cared for him, that didnt need words. Just like Max knew Ash still cared for him, but only as friends. He listened to Ash, and surprisingly, he found a smile etching on his face, probably the first one to grace his features in weeks. He put a hand on Ash's shoulder and smiled.
"You dont need to explain all this Ash, as long as Cris makes you happy in the way you deserve to be. Im happy."

Ash smiled, "Yeah, it really is." He sighed, "Think the rumors will ever stop? Or are we doomed to a life of drama?" He smiled, "Thanks. I hope whatever you chose, makes you happy as well." He cracked a mischievous smile, and his sapphire eyes sparkled with glee. "Hey, wanna go torture the first years?" he asked Maxi.

"They'll stop when they get bored."
Maxi laughed, rumours were only rumours. Though in this case they were true. It seemed as though things were mending, at least between Max and Ash. Max and Cris, well that was still to be seen. They hadnt spoke to eachother in a while, nor had they seen one another. Though he was sure the two would run into eachother eventually.
"So you dont mind me and Laney then?"
He had to ask, it was a question which was holding him back from saying yes to Laney. He ran a finger over the cut on his lip though smiled when Ash asked if he wanted to go and torture some first years.
"I dont think my current condition is good enough. Its still painful"

Ash nodded. "True." Max was right, the rumors would stop when people got bored. Ash just wished they'd hurry up and get bored already!
He smiled, "Of course I'm okay with it." And he was. His face became serious, "But I will tell you the same thing I told Cris, you hurt Laney, and I will break every bone in your body. Understood?" He smiled to soften his words, his tone however, left no room for negotiation.
He laughed, "Oh come on! It'll be fun! Besides, what can first years do to us?"
