Tears rolled down the face of a beautiful girl, as she clutched her bruised wrist to her chest. The ice blue of her watery eyes was even more intense, though no one would have noticed unless she looked up from the ground. She was sprawled out a little, on her knees, white flowing dress strewn haphazardly around her pale body, slightly tattered at the neck. Her jean jacket was beside her, untouched, as the Slytherin girl scampered off, a sickly pleased look on her face. Katya didn't know her name, nor did she have any desire whatsoever to learn it. She just wanted to be left alone by her. She understood they were mean because of something inside them, and the major prejudice, but still. Just because they thought she was a freak, didn't give them an excuse to punish her.
Or maybe she did deserve it. Whatever the case was, Katya's thoughts were elsewhere. Along the lines of 'wow, this really hurts' and, 'great, now I'm the freak with the bruised arms'. She almost never cared about what other people thought of her, but it didn't help her situation. Now people were going to think she purposely did this to herself. Parting her lips in a silent groan, Katya rubbed her forehead, tired of all this. If she were in her right mind, she most likely'd just pick herself up and drag her sorry body back to the common room, avoiding more teasings on the way to the girls' dorm. Ah, well. She'd just sit here then, crying in complete silence save for the wind, which gently rustled the blades of grass and the leaves in the trees.

It was on days like these Leo was glad to be outside, out of the castle and usually away from Gray and his idiocy. Leo didnt know how Gray could be so irrational, he was a rulebreaker and no matter how Leo tried he could never stop him from doing the things Gray so desired on doing, and usually, trying to drag Leo down with him.
Leo was known by the Slytherins as yet another mudblood and always got the mudblood cough or sneeze from them. Yet they never took their wands to Leo, never threatened him in any way. Maybe it was because Leo was bigger in size than most of them, or maybe they did have a brain and knew if pushed, Leo could be very handy with a wand.
Of course the taunts of the Slytherins never helped his mental area, the feeling of not belonging in both world, that alienated feel and the distance he felt from others. He never felt like he belonged anywhere, the whole Muggle in Magic thing never really fit with Leo, and yet he was better in the Magical world than the Muggle one. Being dragged out of his thoughts by a Slytherin on a rampage, who knocked into him giving off one of her mudblood insults to which Leo just smiled to politely. He wasnt about to defend his honor, he was a muggle born, but he was not of dirty blood.
He watched the Slytherin out of sight, a rather puzzled look was on the Ravenclaw's face. She had looked very pleased with herself before she knocked into him, and that could only mean one thing, she had hurt someone. He looked into the direction she had come from and saw a crumpled mass on the floor, someone was hurt and by the looks of it, quite badly. Leo rushed over and as he got closer he realised it was Kitty. She was beaten up quite badly, though nothing a few correctly done spells wouldnt heal.
"Here,"
He took hold of her arm and pointed his wand at it, with a furrowed brow and excellent concentration he managed to do the spell properly and the bruises on her arms were already fading. Leo was no expert at broken bones, he hadnt studied that part yet so instead he conjured some bandages and wrapped them around her wrist and did a spell to lessen the pain so it was at bearable level. That was Leo, a right little carer at heart. He didnt like seeing people hurt, even if they did deserve it. Which he was sure Kitty didnt. Picking up her jacket, he placed it over her shoulders and helped her stand up.
"What happened?"

Her eyes were still on the floor, squeezed shut, until someone grabbed her arm, which then they flew open, pupils wide against ice blue irises. For a moment Katya thought the Slytherin had come back for her, and she opened her mouth, silently crying out. After a second of which she thought she looked like a complete idiot, the Claw realised it wasn't the girl returning to wreak more havoc upon her bruised self, it was.. A Ravenclaw boy. Eyes wide, she watched, transfixed, as he healed the bruises on her arm, and bandaged them. How did he know how to do that? Whatever the last spell was, it felt warm and calming, dulling the pain to an occasional prick. Such a thoughtful thing for him to do..
"What happened?" The question caught her off-guard: how was she going to explain this to him? He didn't know she couldn't. Parting her lips, Katya tried her best to mouth the words to him, but it wouldn't take much for him to get the picture. She was a Ravenclaw, the bully was a Slytherin. That was excuse enough, at least in her case. Not like Slytherin's needed much reason to beat up a mudblood, right? Wow, today just wasn't her day. Usually she was so much brighter and happier. ' I got in her way. ' Katya explained, a small, confused frown on her face. ' I tried getting out of it, but she wouldn't let me. '

"They're a pushy bunch"
Leo let go of her, he knew what it was like to be taunted and mocked by them and knew she was one who was taunted too. Maybe this they had in common if nothing else. He had done pretty much all he could do with her arm, she would either have it healed properly at the Hospital Wing or let it fix itself. Leo wasnt much of a talker, so trying to think of something to say to her to let her know it would be alright, without sounding all cliched was kinda difficult for him. If he was Gray, he'd probably have her laughing by now.
He knew the damage the Slytherin had done wouldnt leave any external permant marks, but he couldnt be sure about the inside. Hell, they had given Leo a good few emotional scars himself, add onto the ones he had given himself he could probably paint his insides and make it look like a stained-glass window. He ran his hand through his hair and looked to the ground, the lawns were empty save for Leo and Kitty, which in all honesty, he was glad about. He couldnt be dealing with a crowded place but everyone was inside probably stuffing their faces in the great hall right about now.
"Are you going to be okay?"

{ O:! Nooo. -stabs it- }
' I will be, thank you. ' Unable to ignore the suspicion creeping up on her, Katya narrowed her eyes slightly, ' If you are going to call me a freak, dont bother. The Slytherin did it enough times for you, and the rest of the student body at Hogwarts. ' Sure, he may have took it ruder than she meant for it to, because she was just being wary, but I guess that was to be expected. Implyingly accusing him of ulterior, dastardly motives after he just helped her. Strike two, girl. You're on a role. She mentally scolded herself. Exhasperation then shone through her face, dulling the sparkle in her eyes and turning the corners of her lips down. There wasn't much reason against him calling her that. He must have realised by now she wasn't talking. Why was he even helping her?
Slipping her hands, then her arms, into the sleeve of her jacket, Katya seemed to sigh, looking up at him questioningly.

It would taste a lie for Leo to pretend like that little stab of hers hadnt both angered and hurt him. He had just helped her and now she was basically saying he was the same as one of those Slytherins? If anyone knew anything about being a freak or an outcast it was Leo. His blood was far from pure and he had had that pointed out to him for years, yet out of the kindness inside him he had come to help her, come to show her not everyone was bad, only to have it thrown back in his face like that.
"I wasnt even thinking about calling you anything except maybe your name."
He didnt know what was going through that mind of hers, but yet he somehow related to her actions. Though even so, Leo wouldnt accuse anyone of anything after they had just helped them. He didnt have to do what he did, with that he shook his head and walked a little ways passed her to a nearby tree and leant on it. All his life in Hogwarts, he had been the quiet one, the one nobody noticed and when they did notice him it was for his impurity of blood status. She wasnt the only one who was put through the mill by Slytherins, and yet she was acting like she was.

Standing there shocked, to put it mildly, Katya's eyes widened, as her jaw fell open a little. My name? She thought wonderously. He actually knew her name? But no one knew her name. And she had just insulted him. Strike three, you're out. Turning slowly, an apologetic look crept on to her face, as she made her way over to him. ' Forgive me.. No one has ever shown me kindness like that, except for my parents. ' She mouthed, eyes on the ground. Embarrassed, clearly. ' I didn't know how to react, or what to make of it. ' How the heck was she going to make friends if she kept running around acting socially retarded? Again, she thought to herself: maybe I am a freak.
' What is your name? ' Katya asked, hoping it might ease the tension between them. Glancing at the bandages wrapped around her wrists, and just before the crease of her elbows, she realised that what she said was a mistake. Actually, she had just as the words left her mouth, but there was nothing stopping her from mentally kicking herself around again anyway.

His head was tilted back on the bark of the tree as he stood there thinking. Would she had preffered to have him leave her bruised and broken? Alone? Or would she not have? The way she was acting definatly suggested the latter, though as he heard the sound of movement he looked down to see her making her way over to him with an apologetic look on her face. As she words left her mouth he gave a small smile.
"Its alright," He said with a shrug, "Its hard to know how to recieve an act of kindness sometimes."
That statement. He could relate to. So long Gray tried to show him that there were people in the world who didnt care where you were from, didnt care about your blood lineage, so many times Leo had pushed him away, yet Gray never relented, he kept on hounding Leo, kept on pushing until he found a way beneath the shell that surrounded the Ravenclaw. Gray was the only one Leo trusted besides his family.
"Leo" He smiled to her, "Leo Ryder."

Relieved to know the insult hadn't shaken him too much, and he was willing to forgive her, Katya breathed a sigh of, well, relief. Somehow she felt she could relate with this Leo, and that made conversation much easier. ' And they say chivalry is dead. ' She seemed to laugh, smiling more brighter than before. ' I owe you my thanks, Leo Ryder. ' Sitting nearby, she crossed her legs, looking up at him. ' If you hadn't caught me beaten up and bruised, I'd still be.. Beaten up and bruised. ' Grinning, the Ravenclaw stretched out, basking a little in the sunlight before returning to the safety of the shade. She preferred the cool temperatures than the hot ones, anyhow.
Unsure of how to say what she wanted to next, Katya frowned a moment, as the light seemed to snap on in her head and she formed her responce, ' What classes do you like best? ' She was always curious as to why they were the person's favorite. What they liked best about them, that kind of thing.

It was a pleasantly warm day for the middle of November which sort of surprised Leo. Sure it wasnt as warm as it would be in Mexico but it was narrowing on the hot scale. He looked at Katya as she sat down beside where Leo was stood and he gave a small nod to her. All Leo wanted to do was help people, it didnt matter in a way how isolated he felt from everyone else, the fact he wouldnt, or couldnt connect with anyone else wasnt much of a big deal for the Muggleborn Ravenclaw.
"No, its alright. You dont owe me anything."
He knew what it felt like to feel indebted to someone, it wasnt a nice one and sometimes people went overboard trying to do things for people when they felt that way. Leo didnt want her to feel like she owed him something, all he needed to know was, she would have done the same for him if she knew the right spells to use and that was the only thanks Ryder needed.
"Uhm," Leo said thinking, "Probably Muggle Studies and Ancient Runes. You?"

Shrugging her shoulders at this, Katya then nodded. Alright, no debts then. He must have thought her strange, silently mouthing all these questions. He hadn't asked about why, yet. Was there the faintest possibility he knew? How? When? Curious as to why he wasn't running away from her - though the first thought on the matter was, well, he must be a nicer person than the ones she had met previously - she nearly asked him then and there, but remembered they were already having a conversation on something else. It'll have to wait. ' Muggle studies? I would have taken that class, but I heard they only teach about.. British muggles? ' Or maybe she was wrong, but she was positive Russian muggles weren't their areas of expertise.
' It changes from time to time, but its managed to stay at Divination and Care of Magical Creatures. ' Well, that was a mouthful. For her, anyway. A little shyly, she added, ' You aren't curious about.. My voice? ' With absolutely no hint of anger in her expression, just curiosity and a bashful air. Maybe it didn't matter to him, but most people got a little tired of it, saying it was like talking 'to a brick wall'. Or, to yourself. Which hurt, more than a little. She was nothing like a wall.

Leo was fully aware that Katya was mouthing everything silently and he had come to the conclusion of either she couldnt talk or she was having a silent day. Maybe for a charity like they do in Muggle Schools or something. Though he didnt dwell on the matter much so it was alright. This obviously meant Leo had to concentrate as he wasnt really that good at the whole lip reading jig but Katya seemed to make it easy to understand, it was almost as though he could hear her, even though no sound came out, he assumed if sound could come out then he had a feeling her voice would be soft and gentle, a little comforting too but aside that, he thought it would be a nice voice. Definatly one he would like to hear one day.
"No, no" Leo smiled, "They teach about all different kinds of muggles, but they dont just teach us about Muggles." He smiled at her, "They show us how Muggles do things, you know from a Wizards perspective. The differences between the two cultures, its actually rather funky to see how a Wizarding community looks upon the Muggle one considering... Well... Just considering."
He had come close to admitting something about himself. Leo did not like that. He didnt like people being able to get under his skin properly and he nearly told Katya about him being Muggle Born, not that it bothered him being who he was, it just meant he was slowly starting to trust people a bit more, but now he thought on it he wasnt quite sure he was ready for that as his eyes scanned the grass, only looking up in time to see her mouth more words to him. Which made him smile surprisingly.
"Your voice?" He questioned, then realised she must have meant the fact she couldnt talk, "Well yeah, I wondered about it but I figured if you wanted me to know you would tell me yourself. I dont like to pry on things that are none of my business."

And there was nothing she wanted more, than to have someone hear her voice. To tell her they loved it, that it caused a sense of peace to envelop them when she spoke. Though over the hears that vain hope was beginning to fade.. Katya doubted there was any chance she would get her voice back. Sometimes it didn't bother her; it made her unique, the only mute girl at Hogwarts. Then again she preferred to stand out like a sore thumb because of her personality, not her disability, but that was to be expected, right? Two points of view, two sides of the coin. And right about now, she had a foot tottering on each side, unsure of her true feelings on the matter.
Pressing her lips together in one of those 'hm' motions, wondering if that made sense until he explained it. ' Oh. ' See, if she'd taken that class, she would have known that. Perhaps it was time for her to show up for lessons now and then, instead of focusing her full attention on Divination and the like. It would be a nice change, might remind her a little of home. The use of the word funky drew her from her thoughts, and she seemed to laugh. Who used the word funky anymore? It was cute, though. After that, however, he seemed a little tight-lipped, as if there was something he nearly made the mistake of revealing to her. Didn't bother her, it could be a touchy subject, or he was probably more bottled up about it. Katya accepted the fact that people weren't completely open about themselves with other people like windows, but kept some things hidden within themselves like clams. Plus, like Leo, she wasn't one to pry. She was muggle born too, a fact she didn't prefer to share with anyone, 'lest it give the Slytherin's another reason to hit her.
Lightly pressing her fingers to her throat - touching yet not touching, a gesture that might send shivers throughout someone else's body had she done it to them - Kitty frowned lightly, mouthing, ' Accident. '

He didnt even try to understand what it was she was feeling. The sense of never being able to actually put a voice to her words, to express herself, her feelings in words of voice rather than that of silence. He felt a pang of something in his stomach but he didnt know what it was. His eyes turned a kind of dull amber, rather than the brightness they usually are in sadness for the girl. He figured she was used to it and probably even accepted it, but Leo still wished in his heart that there was something he could do to help her, though that was just who Leo was. He was a kind hearted person who liked helping people in any way possible and he felt in some way like he was somehow letting her down by not being able to. He didnt even have a clue what she was going through, how this was making her feel. Without words, without sound, without the feeling the sound of words could do to make someone understand something. He realised he had been taking his own voice for granted, and realised everyone who could put sound to their words had been doing the same thing. Though inside himself he had this little place where he believed one day she would be able to speak once again. And he believed she hoped that too.
He watched the gesture she did with her hands to her throat and without realising it he found his hand had gone to his own, where his voicebox lay fully working and yet right now would form no words. He gave a small but sad kind of smile when she said, figurativly, the word accident. He wasnt going to ask what kind of accident, he wasnt quite sure he wanted to know. He took hold of one of her hands and gave it a friendly sort of squeeze. Sure, Leo never let people see the real him, he never let people get too close asides from Gray and Isabel. Though Isabel had been there for a very long time for him and Gray had known him for a few months before the start of school so it was only natural he trusted them with every little detail of himself. Though he was trying to show Kitty that he would be around for her if she needed a friend. Yet because of what she was going through he couldnt quite find the right words to say it without it coming out all cliched.
"I-Im sorry to... uh..." Hear wouldnt be the right word for that sentance, "Im sorry."

Looking in to his eyes, she saw something pass through them, a feeling that nearly matched her own. Katya could almost see the swirl of thoughts echoing in his head, probably about her and her voice, or lack thereof. Was it possible he.. Understood? Eyes opening a little wider as emotion threatened to unleash tears down her pale cheeks, she glanced away, then down at his hand as it met hers, giving a small squeeze. However little-seeming the gesture was, it brought some comfort, at least. And for a moment she was reluctant to let it go.
Smiling a little as he stuttered, trying to put his apology in to words, Kitty waited until he finished, shaking her head a little. ' There was nothing you could have done. ' Such strange behavior. Apologizing for something you weren't present for, nor could have prevented. Humans baffled her at times, even though she was one herself. Though it also meant that perhaps they were truly sorry for what had befallen her, and were attempting to make things a little better by letting her know that. And despite the solemn note of the conversation, her smile spread just a bit bigger. ' Thank you. ' Katya mouthed after a moment, grateful to be able to connect with someone, be it for a minute or a second, didn't matter how long. It was something, and that was enough to keep her going a while longer.
