Dan walked slowly back to his office, the staff meal was over and it had been the first time in months he had spent so much time in the company of Dia and nothing seemed to have improved and Offley, well she just seemed to make everything worse. As he walked through his classroom the lights began to flicker on lighting the professor’s way to his office and as Dan pulled open the door he looked upon a room that he knew to be his but it was clean, the papers were stacked marked and ready for the next days lessons, the bookshelves were in order, there was not a fire whisky bottle to be seen and hung on the wall were pictures of family and there had been one of Dan and Dia together from Egypt but the photographic Dia refused to come share the same picture as Dan so now it was just Dan by himself under a palm tree.
Closing the door behind him Dan walked over to his desk and slumped into his chair and closed his eyes for a moment almost trying to regain his cool. This evening had shook him up, he had always dared to hope that he would be able to talk to Dia again, for things to be like they were before but now…now he had Offley and she had Bree…there was no going back.
Summoning himself a glass of water Dan pushed himself up in his chair and glanced over at the small pendulum clock he had on his desk, seeing time slowly tick by. It was getting late but Dan knew he would not be able to sleep now he might as well do a bit of extra marking to pass the time and hope that the students essay was dull enough to lull him into a sleep. The only problem was he was helping out his final year Hufflepuff’s with their other classes and this particular Transfiguration essay was intriguing, she was arguing about how advances in modern day magic could possibly result in the ability to turn inedible objects into food with strong flavours. Dan twirled his quill around his figures and sipped on his water as he read the finally line at the bottom.
‘Professor I will come at 8pm tonight to collect the easy and feedback’
Glancing at his clock he timed it perfectly to see the second tick over and the chimes ring out to signal the hour, then aright on cue he heard the classroom door open.

Bree had undertaken to walking Dia back to her room. It was the least she could do after refilling Dia’s drink every time she refilled her own. She had, in all the chatter, forgotten that Dia did not grow up on a wine farm and didn’t have to tolerance for it as she did. It was a regrettable fact but a true one and now Bree was feeling for it. Dia kept on going on about seeing Hubbles. It was strange that though Dia had avoided him for all this time she still felt as strongly for him as she did the day they had admitted to how much they loved each other. Brianna had not heard the end of it and now she wasn’t going to hear the end of this either.
Closing Dia’s door behind her, Bree’s hand linger on the door handle and she lent against the door. She had two options, she decided: she could go tell Hubbles what she had heard come out of Dia’s mouth knowing full well that if he left as he planned Dia would never stop moping or she could forget it and hope that Dia came to her senses sooner rather then later. Bree snorted and shook her head, her short hair flopping about her face, as she knew that if she returned to her room she would be thinking about it instead of sleeping. This was a big problem Brianna faced, having a selective conscience that kept her up sometimes. So, making her decision, Bree pushed herself off the door and headed towards Daniel’s room.
She arrived at his class and knocked upon the door but when there was no answer, Bree let herself in and headed towards the door at the other end, presumably his bed chambers. This was how many of the classrooms in Hogwarts were designed with a few exceptions, her’s and Dia’s included in those exceptions. Her dark green high heals clapped loudly through the empty class but her stride didn’t falter. She checked her white polka dotted green dress and ran her hands through her hands. She was coming with a proposition and had to look respectable for it.
She reached the door and reached for the handle but stopped herself from turning it. With Dia she could barge in, it was fine and almost expected, but it would be considered rude if she did it now. Coughing to clear her throat, Bree wrapped her knuckles on the door a few times, always forceful knocks so he was sure to hear it. She wasn’t sure what she was going to say but Brianna rarely gave thought to what she was going to say so she knew she would wing it as she went.

Dan put the quill down upon the table and slowly picked up the papers that were upon his desk giving them one last quick scan over to make sure he had made notes on them before pushing himself out of his chair. Slowly he wondered over towards the door, head still down looking upon the essay and as the knock sounded out on the door Dan reached out and took hold of the handle and gave the door a sharp tug. The door slowly opened and Dan felt the draft of the cold air in the classroom overcome him, however he did not look up he was still re reading the final paragraph of the essay trying to refresh his mind on what had been written.
“Beth your right on time I need to talk to you about the…” Dan looked up from the parchment but it was not a 7th year Hufflepuff standing in front of him but the care of magical creatures professor. “Your not Beth.”
Dan’s hand flopped to his side and he looked on at Bree with a look of confusion, he did not know why she was here there was no reason seeing as only a few hours ago she had stood up to him and sliced him down in front of all the other staff members. Dan had a sinking feeling why Bree was here and it was certainty not to apologise for what she had said at dinner, she had meant that.
Clenching his jaw Dan took a few steps backwards to give Bree clear access to the room and with a simple gesture he signalled for her to enter and gently closed the door behind her. As the latch clicked Dan closed his eyes and took a deep breath trying to compose himself before turning around and walking back to his desk.
“What can I do for you Professor?”

Brianna was regulating her breathing as she knew that calmed her down. Her eyes on her hands as she fidgeted, she thought about simply walking away. Hubbles would think it was a simple prank and no hard would come of it. But harm would, Bree realised, her arms dropping to her side. Dia would never let it go and she would have no peace. Just before the door opened, Bree began to wonder if she was doing this for her friend or for herself?
Her shoulders sank as she stood at the closed door. "Confounded drunken!" she cursed as the door did still not open. Knocking again, Bree began to tap a foot. There was not many things that Bree lacked but patience was definitely one of them. She was about to knock a third time but the door slowly opened, her fist still in the air to knock. Inside she could see there was order and it made her frown. She knew the Charms professor to be a slob so a tidy room was most irregular.
Dan was reading a parchment and called her Beth. Bree frowned a little more, sweeping her short dark hair from her face with her raised hand. Dan finally looked at her and his face dropped. Rolling her eyes a little, Bree cleared her throat and smiled, "no, I'm not." Though Dan stood aside, Bree almost pushed her way in, looking around. She wasn't used to seeing any professor's quarters being so tidy. "Done a bit of spring cleaning, I see."
Bree looked at Dan with an inquisitive expression on her face at Dan's clear disdain for her. "I don't want to be here any more then you want me here," she informed him, poking a long forefinger into his chest. Shaking herself back into control, she smoothed down her polka dotted dress and tried a smile. "I ... erm," she faltered. She looked around, searching for the words but no helpful ones came. She took a deep breath and looked back at Hubbles. "Look, Hubbles," she began, "you ... you can't leave. You just cannot leave Hogwarts."

Dan rolled his eyes as Bree entered the room straight away making a wise crack about how clean everything was. He needed to change everything about it as leaving it the mess it was reminded him to much of Dia and her teasing about the state it was always in. Bree then carried on moaning about how she did not want to be here and that just made Dan wonder why she was but everything was soon made clear when she told him not to leave. His heart stopped and he thought he was going to be sick as he could not understand why she would say such a thing.
“Do not leave? Bree I do not think I have a choice. I can’t…”
Dan’s voice wavered then faded into nothing. He felt his throat close up and his eyes tingle with the threat of tears. Had it been anyone else standing in front of him he would have fought against the emotion but to Dan Bree felt like his only connection left to Dia and to fight against the emotion made it seem like he no longer cared and that could not have been further from the truth. Dan still loved Dia with every fibre he had left in his body she was his world and the months they had spent apart tore another bit of his soul apart and Dan knew the longer he stayed in the castle the sooner he would be come an empty shell of the man he once was.
With a small cough Dan tried to recompose himself knowing that the truth had to be told to Dia’s best friend so that when the message eventually gets passed on Dia will not hear another lie. Meeting Bree’s gaze Dan took a deep intake of breath and licked his lips in anticipation of the words that were to follow.
“I am leaving for her. I have no right to teach at the same school as her, Dia was here first, I was the one who made the mistake, so I will be the one to leave.” Dan looked to the floor before continuing. “I love her Bree, I have not stopped loving her and I will do what ever it takes to cling onto the vain hope that I can hold her in my arms again.”

Brianna O'Donnell was a strong woman, emotionally a shoulder any could cry one without her tearing up herself. The way Daniel Hubbles was talking made Bree put a hand to her quivering lip and made her blink her eyes to prevent the tears from falling. She knew all too well that Dia still loved Dan and now she heard it from the horse's mouth that he still loved her too. It was gut wrenching to see and be a part of what was happening to this couple.
Dan looked away and Bree was thankful for that. She lent her elbow on her hand to keep her hand before her mouth so that he wouldn't see the sides of her mouth dancing with sadness. Brianna is a strong woman, she told herself, I am storng. She ran it through her head as she listened to Dan confess to her his love for her dearest friend. In a way, Bree had asked for this, she had asked to be there for Dia, she had chosen to visit Dan, and she was not going to give up her choice now and break down. She dropped her arms to her sides all sadness gone.
"I know you do, Dan," Bree said gently, taking a step towards him. "And believe me when I tell you she still loves you. Leaving would mean giving up what might be. Leaving would be running away, the mark of a lesser man." Bree took another step and thought carefully about what she was saying. "It is no secret that you and I are not on the best of terms but I have been with Dia these past months and heard much I didn't think possible of you. Not until your announcement tonight."
Brianna waited till Dan looked at her. She put a hand on his shoulder to encourage eye contact and she smiled softly, "I can see it in your eyes as I saw it earlier. You don't just love her. You admire and respect Dia and for that reason I am asking you to stay. For her. For all those reasons you think mean you have to leave are as much of a reason for you to stay as any that I can give you." Bree could not believe that she was talking as she was to a man she thought to be a chauvinist pig who was so utterly in love with her best friend. What a funny world.

In his hour of need Bree was someone Dan would never have thought about talking to let alone get good advice from, but then here he was on the verge of breaking down into tears and blurting out that he still loved her best friend. He was trying to control his breathing as he listened to what Bree had to say but hearing that Dia still loved him just made everything even worse. His frustration was building up inside as all he could think about was that if he had been more of a man and bothered to talk to Dia earlier they could have sorted this out by now, they could have been together once more…however Dan had a feeling it would not be that easy.
The thing that did make Dan chuckle though was that Bree although giving advice was simultaneously insulting him. But for once Dan did not mind what people thought about him, the only person that mattered was Dia and the fact that she still loved him was all that mattered (Dan was sure it was also mixed with hate but that could be overlooked for the moment) It was only when Bree reached out a placed her hand on his shoulder and they looked eye to eye did he realises what had to be done.
“So you are saying I should stay for Dia…to be the better man and instead of running away I stand and face my fears.”
Dan sighed and moved away from Bree, his mind spinning with what he was going to do and whether it was for the best, it had to be after all Bree was Dia’s close friend, she had been there for the past months when Dan had not…she would know best. Sitting down on his chair Dan studied the wood work of his desk while continuously running his hand through his hair almost trying to sooth himself.
“I will stay only to help Dia move on, I am no good for her…this love is unhealthy for the both of us.” Dan gave a weak smile and looked up at Bree “If I can see her smile and hear her laugh once more then I will be happy.”
Then it will be his turn to move on.

When Dan moved away, Bree quickly lifted her hand as though she had been burnt. She let her arm hang loosely at her side as she watched Dan regain control of himself. Any self respecting man should know better then to cry in front of a woman or any one else for that matter. Bree had a strong image on what a real man was and Dan didn't fit the mold. How he had managed to capture Dia so entirely was beyond her.
As Dan sat, Bree looked around a bit. A picture on the wall caught her attention and as Dan spoke, Bree moved slowly closer to the picture. "That's what I'm saying," Bree said though she was distracted. She leaned close to the picture and wondered why the Dan in the picture was sulking so. Though asking would have been interesting she didn't particularly want to know. Who Dan had on his wall was his business and if he wanted a picture of himself there he was more moronic then she had first though.
Moving away from the wall, Bree looked at the professor with a broad smile. "Good," she said simply. "I don't know how Dia will take all of this. She'd surely kill me if she knew that I had come here myself to speak to you." She chuckled to herself before she simply had to look back to the picture. She had to ask, her curiosity was just about to drive her insane. "Hubbles," she said, "what's with this picture?"

So Bree had come on her own free will, clearly in the want to help her friend get out of the pit of depression she had fallen….pushed into. This was when Dan need to take the stand and be the better man and help Dia out by putting her happiness first before his own selfish deeds. Playing his the sleeve of his shirt Dan looked in the direction of the door but was lost in deep thought that was until Bree spoke once more.
‘Picture?’ Dan mouthed to himself as he spun around on his chair to look over at Bree to see where she was looking. Unsurprisingly she had managed to find the only picture in the room where he look even more depressed then the real thing. (most likely because he was sitting under a palm tree by himself) However something surprising happened, a small smile filled Dan’s face as when he thought about it the whole idea seemed ridiculous. Pushing himself out of his chair Dan slowly walked over to the picture the smile still upon his face as he gazed on at the photo.
“It is from Egypt last year.” Dan was sure Bree knew all about that holiday. “It was taken during our fourth week…Dia should be in it with me…however photographic Miss Owen is refusing to be in the same picture as the photographic version of me and is hiding behind the frame.”
Dan had to stop himself from stroking the side of the frame in hope that Dia would appear. During the first few weeks of the break up and Dan had not been taking it all to well he would spend hours shaking the picture, slamming it against the walls in hope that she would appear. He had broken so many frames it was untrue but in those occasions when the wooden casing broke away and the picture was exposed photographic Dia would turn her back on him. With a soft laugh Dan turned to met the gaze of Bree, a small smile playing across his lips.
“Even the photographs hate me.”

Dan made a sudden movement and Bree slowly turned her head to face him. She nodded her head towards the photo she was talking about before looking back at it. It was such a peculiar picture of himself to have. Palm trees and clear skys shouldn't be seen by ones self but as soon as Egypt was mentioned Brianna understood. "Ooooh," she said slowly looking back to him as he came closer to her. The look on his face was puzzling to her but never the less she looked back to the picture with new understanding.
"She doesn't hate you," Bree said after a moment's silence. She had heard it from Dia's own mouth that she did but Bree knew that it was just because she was hurting. "She is hurt and that blurs many lines. The lines of love and hate ..." she slowly turned and straightened "... loathing and contempt and slight admiration." She had to admit, and this was the only way, that she might have had some small pangs of admiration for the man before her though she would never admit it. As soon as they were back together and Dia was happy, Bree would go back to loathing Hubbles like it should be.
"Right," she said finally. "Are you going to offer me tea or am I going to have to beg?" She walked to the chair Dan has been sitting in and sat, swinging one long leg over the other. She knew that with some tea in her the copious amounts of wine she had had earlier that evening would not cloud her mind at all. She leant her elbows on the arms of the chair and linked her fingers over her lap. "No sugar, spot of milk, thank you."

Dan looked back to the picture during the silence that fell between the small Professors and found it hard not to smile when the photographic Dan rolled his eyes and nodded his head in the direction of where photo Dia was hiding. Dan was going to give the frame a light tap as a joke with his photographic self only to be stopped by the sound of Bree. Her words for some reason did not hurt Dan as he thought they would, instead he found then strangely reassuring to know that the hate that he was convinced Dia felt and the depressed state they were both in was because after almost 5 months they had been unable to get over the heart ache of being apart.
“I was not planning on offering you a drink at all Bree.”
Said Dan with a slight hint of humour in his voice, he eyes glinted playfully and his lopsided smile appeared as he saw Bree’s legs flop over the arms of his chair. Dan could not help but remember that one of the first times he had met this lively professor was at the staff table when she summoned up the perfect cup of tea for him and Dia…a day that was fixed in his memory as one of the happiest in his life. Snapping out of his miniature day dream he looked over at Bree and ginned at her before pulling out his wand and summoning a pot of tea and two cups onto the table. With a fluid motion his wand was inside his pocket once more and he was carefully pouring the pot of tea, an art he had mastered over the past year. Adding the small dash of milk Dan gave the liquid a quick stir watching it turn slightly paler then before and as a finishing touch as always he tapped the soon on the side letting the sound off the china ring out around them.
“Your tea my lady.”
Cheekily pocking his tongue out slightly at her Dan made himself a cup before perching at the end of his desk looking over at Bree, his sprits feeling lighter already. Maybe it was the company or the feeling that he was now not leaving the castle, he was staying with his Hufflepuff’s for another year, that for once in his life Dan was not running away from his problems but moving on like a mature adult.
“So we need to work out how to help Dia move on…” Dan stopped for a minute and tried to cover up his lose of words for a want of tea. So with a long, drawn out sip Dan thought over what he was about to say and hoped he would not choke on his words once more. “I think you should take out for a drink…get her out the castle.”

Bree looked around the room, most interested at what a man kept a close hand for his leisure and pleasure. There didn't seemed to be much that she could see, all packed away where it belonged, no doubt. She still did not believe that this man was the one who lived in this room. It astounded and fascinated her, putting a slight smile in one corner of her mouth. Dan spoke and she turned to him, her eyes not focusing on him. When they eventually did, she smiled and nodded once.
"I was not planning on staying for it." Bree had to admit she hadn't planned anything as she had had no clue what was going to happen as soon as Dan had opened the door. It seemed to have turned out alright as she was still relaxed from the wine and Dan was in one piece. "But you won't be rude and kick me out before tea."
She watched him conjure the tea pot and accessories but soon lost interested. Bree shifted in the seat she was occupying and looked around the back of it. There was nothing interesting to look at which was most disappointing as snooping and gossip were such wonderful playing things when you had them. Being in this man's room and leaving with no gossip to speak of was unheard of. Nevertheless, she did not ask about the tidying. She was certain it was a withdrawal symptom of not having a neat freak Dia around.
The ting of china caught her ear and Brianna sat straight in her chair, looking at Dan. He was holding a cup of tea just as she had asked for it out to her. Taking it, Bree said snippily, "I am not your lady and thank you." The tongue that was stuck out at her was an amusing surprise and as she lifted the cup to her lips, a smile crossed her face. He was a silly man, for sure, but charming. Bree might have been beginning to see what Dia saw in the arrogant sod.
The tea was, to put it mildly, superb. Bree would not admit it to the man before her but she smiled mildly and sipped again. Dan spoke and she had known he would soon ask such a thing. It was, in Bree's mind, imperative that Dia get out into the world again. Bree lifted her blue green eyes to Dan and smiled. "Don't look so worried," Bree said with sing-song cheer, "that's done easier then said. But what Dia chiefly needs is a distraction. No offence to you but she must stop thinking of you so much. I can take her out but we need a man that isn't you but nearly is to start to ween her off you, as a manner of speaking."
She sipped her tea once more and began to think. "Merlin prohibit it but do you have a brother like yourself? Who looks enough like you to have some resemblance? The way I see it is she gets a substitute for you, someone who looks like you and possibly even talks like you but that obviously isn't you. Who won't seduce her and want to sleep with her within the first five minutes of meeting her." She looked up at Dan as though she had not said anything mean. In her mind she had not as it was all true.

Dan could not help but chuckle as Bree mentioned about finding Dia a replacement Dan. His attention seeking, big headed side crept out and wanted to soak up what it thought was a compliment. However common sense soon prevailed and Dan looked over at Bree with raised eyebrows as she continued about him having a brother who acted like him.
“Afraid not…Girty is my only sibling and I do not think she would be up to the job of chatting up Dia…”
Dan broke off almost as if an idea had fallen from the sky and hit him on the head taking his attention away. Putting his cup down Dan slid off the table and walked over to a chest that was up against one of the walls. Pulling open the lid he started to rummage around inside before pulling out a tattered book. It was leather bound, thick and the pages were bend at the side almost as if it had been look through many times. With a caring smile Dan traced his fingers over the gold lettering on the front that spelt out ‘Hubbles’ Inside the pages were covered in pictures of different places, different people and different creatures. Gently flicking through the pages Dan stood up and walked back and as he reached the desk he placed the book down and pointed to a certain picture.
There were three people in the picture that Dan pointed to. One was clearly a young Girty, barley ten years old. Her face was full of laughter as she looked upon the elder males in the picture. The smaller, thinner, clean shaven one was Dan wearing a very fetching pair of glasses, the other was an older, chubbier, stubble filled face of Sebastian. They were acting like typical young males ruffling each others hair, roughly pulling each other into headlocks, thumbing each other and even on some occasion’s team up and go for Girty, who as a result would have to duck and dive out of the way to avoid the jovial attacks.
“That is Sebastian.” Said Dan pointing to his older cousin, who was now flashing his most charming smile at the on lookers, a mischievous glint flashing in his eyes almost as if they were the real thing. “He came to live with our family for a while, we were as close as any real brothers could be…but then he went away to do his own thing.”
Dan pushed the book towards Bree so she could get a closer look if she wanted while Dan jumped back onto the table and picked up his tea once more. Sipping on the warm nectar Dan could not believe he was actually helping Bree get Dia out and about and even providing the first man as a stepping stone, he longed that he could be in Sebastian’s position and be able to talk and laugh with Dia but he had lsot his chance and he needed to help the woman he loved find someone else….after all he did have Carrieanna.
“So…is he a potential candidate? He is in town actually…not sure why but he was with me when we were attacked….”
Dan broke off and took straight back to his tea trying to forget that he just mentioned about being beaten up. He had a feeling Bree did not think much of him but knowing he had been beaten up would be the icing on the cake.

Bree sipped her tea slowly, watching Dan from behind her cup. She wasn’t certain how he would react to her suggestion of finding a replacement and was most interested to find out. His gripe about Girty made the Care of Magical Creatures professor smile warmly. Indeed, Girty would hardly make a substitute and having heard of the two Hubbles’ closeness she doubted if it would help at all. Her smile quickly faded and she stared off into the distance thoughtfully. This wasn’t helping.
The sound of Dan setting his cup down made Bree look at the other professor. He walked to a large trunk and began to rummage through the content. Bree lowered her cup slowly, watching more closely. “What are you looking for, Hubbles?” Bree asked, looking down at the table for a moment, before returning her gaze to the crazed professor and putting her cup down on the table. He returned to his desk carrying a well-worn book and set it down, beginning to flip through the pages. Bree put both her feet on the ground and stood up, slowly making her way to where Dan was standing over the book.
Looking over Dan’s shoulder, Bree could see to what Dan was pointing. Bree watched the occupants of the photo with a smile. It was always nice to see happy people doing happy people things like playing and messing around like the three were in the picture. Brianna had no siblings and no cousins and her parents were both only children too. It made her childhood one where she didn’t shared candid moments like the one displayed in the photo. “Good times, huh Hubbles?” Bree said cheerily, smiling at Dan as she took the corner of the book and turned it a fraction of an inch towards herself.
Sebastian greatly resembled his cousin and Bree had to look from the photo of Dan to the real one to gage how much Sebastian would have changed sine the taking of the photo. He hadn’t changed much, except the bags under the eyes of the actual Dan looked heavy and difficult to bare. He sat down on the table and Bree smiled at him, leaning further over the photo then before. Looking back and forth between the two men in the photo, Bree could tell they were related.
A puzzled look crossed her face. She straightened and looked at Dan when he spoke of being attacked. She didn’t want to know as she didn’t want to be in his life any more then she had to be. “The resemblance is uncanny,” she said with a small smile. “And if he’s in town he’d be perfect.” Quickly, going back to the table with her own tea on it, Bree leaned her hip against the back of the chair and looked at Dan. She took a sip before speaking. “Does Dia know about this Sinbad fellow?” Bree asked brashly.

Dan could tell that Bree was amused by what she saw in the photograph and when she asked if they were good times Dan did not answer he just looked down at the picture was a fond smile almost wishing that they could go back to how they were then now carefree and no responsibility. But time never stops and things change and you have to move on and get over what ever life throws at you. As Dan sat trying to drink his tea he felt the professors gaze flick on then off him clearly as she tried to compare the photo with the real thing. He knew that they did look slightly alike and some of there mannerisms were the same but Dan could never truly see much similarity mainly because he liked to think he was different from everyone else.
Bree then asked Dan something he had not really thought about, for a moment he looked blankly at Bree. He knew that Seb and Dia had never met face to face or in fact seen any pictures of him. Sebastian….he was not a Hubbles that many talked about with a feeling of warmth and pride. He was the black sheep of the family and some of the things he got up too were frowned upon by the elders in the family tree.
“I may have mentioned his name in passing once or twice but nothing major. But once you met him it is hard to forget him.”
Dan chuckled softly and ran his hand through his hair as he thought about it some more on the matter. He could not actually pin point a moment in his time with Dia when he said ’My cousin Sebastian’ but then Dan did not have the best memory for conversations in the world. Taking a long sip of his tea Dan rested the cup back on the table and turned to look at the care of magical creature’s professor once more. He could not actually believe he had been holding some form of conversation with this woman, ever since the fiasco with Dia she had not said a word to him and although the topic was bias as well as the intensions from both the participants Dan found it nice to be talking to another member of staff.
“So have you settled on Sebastian being the distraction then? I am sure he could do a good enough job. Just give me a time and date and I will pass the message onto him…or have Girty do it, might seem less suspicious then.”
