Post by Prof. Darrow on Jul 30, 2007 20:45:09 GMT
Turning as a Ravenclaw flew into the Hospital Wing, clearly nursing a flaring stitch his face crinkled into a smile, "he'll be fine, so long as he gets his rest Miss Riley, now please return to your common room, I'm afraid somebody from the Ministry may wish to you later reagarding today's events," with a warning glance which showed he would have no exclaimations desiring to remain here, he smiled warmly at Dia who had remained level headed throughout the strange preceedings which would doubtless require an inquisition by the Ministry, not least from the school governors he guessed.
"Thankyou Dia, for everything you've done this day, doubtless I shall need your aid again before the end," he stated with a twinkle in his eye that made it seem he knew something everyone else didn't within the room.
Looking solemly at Loren as she fled the scene of the crime with Dax in tow Darrow spoke reassuringly in a carrying voice, "there's no need to panic Miss Hayes if you've done no wrong." He couldn't appear soft in his old age; that was strictly necessary or else parents and governors would lose confidence in his ability, which could easily spell doom for the institute. As everybody parted ways Darrow smiled reassuringly at Girty saying, "I shall ensure your parents arrive soon, whilst you wait I'll send up some butterbeers, they'll help ease your stomach, believe me I know, it isn't the sight of blood but the queasiness from fear, and not misplaced fear, that shows we care for one another, which of course is wonderful," he stated with a wry grin. Hearing the injured professor was coming round Darrow was about to leave to ensure privacy when he heard Hubbles' throaty voice, "certainly Daniel, we'll find her immediately, she'll be more than willing to help you in any way she can," her quick thinking may have saved your life, he thought, but knew given the circumstances he really wouldn't wish to hear that, a life debt wasn't the best thing to wake up to.
Clicking his fingers Fred appeared in a flash, "I require your resourcefulness again my old friend, can you fetch Mr and Mrs Hubbles here directly? You know where they live?" He enquired with a secretive wink at Fred who answered with a cheeky grin, "course I do sir." With another loud crack he was gone on his quest.
"I shall leave you in peace now, he'll need his rest and reccuperation I'll wager, Arista will know best, she was seeing to some important family business I believe." He explained walking briskly over to Girty, taking a firm hold of her wrist he muttered an incantation under his breath so she couldn't hear and repeat it. "Now at a click of your fingers Fred shall come running, he doesn't like to be woken in the dead of night, who would? Nor at mealtimes when he's busiest, but he's always happy to help; a very good natured chap. If you need he or I simply ask." Smiling reassurringly Darrow inclined his head to Girty saying in a hushed voice, "stay strong," then he swept over to her brother.
"I'll see you fit and well soon," sweeping through the doors heDarrow met Dia protecting them with her life. "Ah Daniel would like to see you, don't worry about gurading the doors, I'll sort that." Laying a strong hand upon her shoulder he added, "Dan will need your fortitude and bravery, though outwardly he'll doubtless mend fine, I fear for his mind, under no circumstances should he and Miss Hayes see each other, it solely leads to heartache. I'll see you in my office later if you wish, the Ministry will doubtless want to question any and all involved."
Smiling comfortingly Darrow strode to the nearest statue only five metres away; it was a bent old hag, crooked and wizened, a scroll held aloft in her spinly fingers. "You know what to do," he stated simply. Springing to life the statue's face contorted into something of a smile. "certainly," she croaked crunching over to rest before the doors. Without another word Darrow breathed deeply, wondering if everything was done, he'd surely forgotten something? Regardless he had to continue, in a flurry of robes he swept away to his office; to see to Hayes.

As Loren shouted at Girty and eventually pushed her over she had a strong urge to attack. But not in the normal way, Girty wanted to leap up and pin Loren to the ground and then with a wide jaw rip open her neck, letting the blood and spinal fluids leak out and then stand back watching her die a slow and painful death. Suddenly it felt like someone had threw a bucket of cold water over her, she snapped back to reality seeing Darrow shepherding everyone out of the room. Running her tongue along her teeth Girty checked to make sure that no fangs Girty slowly pushed herself up to her feet feeling rather shocked. That has never happened before.
Girty half listened to what the headmaster had to say, her mind was spinning. In the space of five minutes she had seen her brother slowly bleeding to death, hearing someone confess love for him, then being verbal attacked for simply voicing her opinion and then having to fight off the urge of killing someone. Girty knew she should talk to someone about it, but by the time she had worked out what was happening the room was empty all but her and Dan.
She sad down on the chair next to her brothers bed, everything was silent apart from the odd wheezing sound from Dan and Girty sniffing. She waited for the arrival of her parents. Knowing only to well that she would be questioned about ever last bit of information most likely cause the owl had not yet arrived by the time Fred got tot hem or if so the letter was so useless they knew nothing about it. Suddenly there was a load crack. Girty’s heart sank thinking it would be her parents only to see a house-elf standing in front of her with a tray of butter beers. With a grateful smile Girty leaned took one of the mugs and sipped it slowly, still trying to get her head around what had been happening.

Dia had been guarding the doors to the Hospital Wing with much vigilance. She was pacing and every minute or so a group of students would come to ask about what had happened, each baring a different and wilder story to the last. She sent them all off, as she had been instructed, and let no one into the room. She paced. She had to keep moving, otherwise she was sure the reality of the day's events would sink in and she would not be able to keep herself together any longer.
Wringing her wand in her hands, Dia froze when the Headmaster came out of the door. "Professor," she said, as he walked away, "what do you mean I know ..." She trailed off. He had disappeared just as soon as he had come. It was his way, Dia decided, and it kept everyone on their toes and happy. He always showed up, like today, just in the knick of time and he could make everything right. He was a man worth admiring though his mysterious ways made any idolisation difficult.
Dan wants to see me? she thought and frowned, staring at the ajar door. She wiped her face of anything that might have been there and straightened her baby blue dress that had soaked up Daniel's blood. Dia took a deep breath and pushed the door open a little more, slipped in and closed the door behind her. Girty was sitting in a chair next to Daniel's bed and Dia walked over to her slowly, uncertain of what to say. She ran what Darrow had said to her over and over in her head, pondering their meaning.
She pulled a chair next to Girty and sat next to her. Dia was never good with situations like this, where talking was the best course of action. She could never think of anything to say other then 'I'm sorry' and that never helped in any case so why say it. Think, Illy, think, she told herself. The only thing that came to mind was their parents. "Has someone gone to get your parents?" Dia asked softly, trying to not sound too shaken.

Dennis Hubbles was sitting down in there living room of their semi detached house reading the news paper. Whistling to himself happily he glanced over the top of the financial section to see how his wife Penelope was getting on with the crossword, however she seemed to be frowning. “What is the matter dear?” “Knowledge-Incognito, nine letters. The third letter is a G and it ends in an N”
Silence fell between the two of them, only the sound of the ticking clock on the mantel piece could be heard and would easily be mistaken for the sound of their minds ticking away over the crossword puzzle. With a small laugh the eyes of Dennis grew wide and he proudly stated the answer. “Cognition”
Smugly he raised his news paper once again and continued to read about the muggle finical market and how house prices were on the rise again. It was then they heard a small tapping on the window. Placing his paper on the arm of the chair Dennis walked over and drew back the cream curtain so see an owl peering in. With a bemused smile he opened up the window and turned the letter before giving the owl a treat that was in the bowl on the window ledge. “Has Daniel got arrested again.” Penelope laughed as she walked over to her husband, however she never reached him as a loud crack echoed around the cosy room followed by the appearance of a house elf.
Everything else seemed a blur, from the worried cough form Dennis to the small gasp as Fred the house elf informed them at what had happened. Next thing they knew they were running into the entrance of Hogwarts castle and towards the Hospital wing. As the doors flew open for them Dennis approached the bed of his son ignoring his daughter and the other teacher that was with him. All he could do was stare at the pale body of his son and shake his head. It was then however he noticed that his wife had not yet entered the room, glancing over his shoulder he saw her looking rather bemused at the statue that was now on guard of the door.
“Come on Pen there is plenty of time for you to look at the statue later, your son is lying in bed covered in blood! Remember your son…..Daniel” “Oh Daniel, of course sorry. I always get lost when I come to this place. Oh no look what a mess he is in. I wonder who did this….Oh Girty what are you doing here?” “It is my school Mum.” “Oh yes. Who did this to your brother then. Another one of his tarts?” “Mum!”
Penelope stood stating at her daughter, blinking rather rapidly. Thins had not quite snuck in yet, she expect Daniel to jump up out of bed laughing raucously and give her one of his tight hugs. However he did not move, he just lay still, occasionally his hand would move and you could see his eyes rolling under his eyelids but nothing more. It slowly came to her that her son was indeed in great pain and danger. Turning to her husband Pen wrapped her arms tightly around him and began to sob on his shoulder. Patting her reassuringly on the back Dennis looked over at Girty and pointed at Dia mouthing ‘Who is she?’

As though in answer to Dia's question, a couple, presumably Mr and Mrs Hubbles, stormed into the Hospital Wing. Dia sat quite still, staring at Daniel for as long as she could before becoming rude. When Girty was spoken to, Dia stood up and offered a weak smile to the two who had entered. She noticed Mr Hubbles ask Girty who she was and Dia remembered her manners.
"Oh," she exclaimed, shocked she hadn't said so before, "I ... I am Dia, Dia Owen. I ... I ... I teach ... uh." She looked to Girty for help. She had known this would happen. Her nervous were shot and she could tell that she wasn't making a very good first impression. She hope that Girty could help her in whatever way possible.

Girty did not know where to look, at her parents making fools of themselves, at her ill brother or her Astronomy teacher who quite clearly was not feeling all too thrilled to be the only non Hubbles there. It was then her farther very un-ceremonially asked who Dia was. Fighting back the temptation to bang her head on the wall behind her Girty could only watch on as Dia stuttered her way through and then give Girty a pleading look. She needed to do something, it was Dan who wanted her here and as he was now back in the land of the fairies she would have to come to her rescue.
“Dad this is Professor Dia Owen, she teaches Astronomy and was the one who…found Dan like this and brought him here. Our whole family is in her debt! I doubt Dan would be alive without her!”
During this Girty had for some reason stood up and was once again gesturing violently and shouting at her parents. Looking rather stunned about how she managed to get on her feet Girty sat back down in the chair again and rested her head in her hands. She knew what was coming now, she got it every time she even raised her voice. Bracing herself for the worst Girty shot Dia Owen an apologetic glance and waited noticing that her mother was no longer crying onto her fathers shoulder.

Penelope heard the stuttering of a women but did not move, she did not move until she heard her won daughters voice increase in volume and echo around the almost empty hospital wing. Letting go of her husband she turned around to look upon Girty, who now seemed to be having the cheek to be glancing at her professor in such a way. This magic school really did have strange rules and let the students get away with so much, however Penelope would never forgive herself for raising her daughter up badly.
“Gertrude Marigold Hubbles you will not take that tone of voice to your father and me. It is not acceptable or good manors. I thought you had got your temper under control dear, you can not start to shout irrationally at people. You’re a young women Girty, people up at you to set an example and you should do that. I blame that friend you of yours….the one that bite you. You have never been the same since that Girty.”
“Penelope. Girty is handling her problem just as well as all the rest of her kind.”
“Dad! You make it sound like I am not human. I am fine, if anyone has an anger problem it is Dan.”
“Do not go blaming your brother!”
It was Penelope’s high voice that sounded out once again, however it was clear that Dennis Hubbles was about to say exactly the same thing as he was pointing widely at Dan. He eventually lowered his hand and looked at his daughter with a hard gaze. However once again Penelope had drifted off that topic and was just looking at Dia with a quizzical glare. She was trying to work out if it was a style of dress to be blue with red all over it or was it in fact her sons blood.
“Is that my son’s blood you are covered in? How did you get that much blood into your dress. One thing it will never come out and the second is just how? Girty said you found him but what did you use his corpse as a sled to get to the hospital?”
There was a bang in the background of Girty hitting her head with her hand and the sound of Dennis coughing in the background trying to ignore the tension that was slowly increasing in the room.

Arista ran down the corridor toward her wing. "Oh my goodness!" she saw the blood streaked all along the hallway. There were many foot prints and pools. Arista ran faster, her happy pink robes suddenly becoming dismally close to the red color on the floor. However as she entered the hospital wing, the blood ceases to exist as she jogged in leaving new footprints on her clean floor.
Arista was out of breathe, but before she said anything, or even noticed the others in the room, she rushed over to Daniel. She took his bloody hand in hers and felt his pulse. It was stable for the moment. It gave her a second to breath. She noticed he was well bandaged and looked around.
Professor Darrow had obviously cleaned up the mess. She looked him in the eyes. He had been leaving as she rushed in. She hadn't realize that she had even pushed him aside to get to Daniel. Her eyes were wide. She should have been here. The second she heard the commotion she had sprinted from the owlery, which was quite a distance from the hospital wing. The headmaster said some encouraging words to Girty, Dia, and lastly Dan, and disappeared into his office.
Arista saw blood seeping through the bandages. Without a thought, she pulled out her wand and summoned new bandages. She them wrapped them tight. It probably wasn't comfortable, but Dan needed all the blood her had left. Arista's hands were bloody. She looked at the poor unconscious man, and picked his head up placing it more comfortable on two pillows.
She put a bloody hand on her stomach and the other on her forehead, catching her breath. "Dia..." She finally said, panting. "Dia, I'm sorry I was posting something to my mother and...I'm so sorry I wasn't here." She looked at Dan. "Please Dia, what happened? I can't help until I know exactly what happened?"
Arista turned to the bickering folks behind her. "Family?" She asked Dia under her breath. "It seems as though they are about as informed as I am. Now get me the low down and then I suggest you let them know what happened before Girty puts a permanent dent in her head from her hand."

Dia smiled gratefully at Girty whose introduction had been perfect, far better then any she could have thought to. There was the slight matter of her raised voice but Dia could over look it as nervous and fatigue and worry. She know almost exactly how Girty was feeling and as she sat, she put a comforting hand on her shoulder and added a little smile, her blond hair falling off her shoulders.
It took her a moment or two to fathom that Mrs Hubbles was addressing her. Dia looked down at her stained dress and flushed an ugly embarrassed pink. She couldn't find words to say what she was thinking: that even if she could get it clean the thought of having have Daniel's blood all over it was a discouragement for wearing it again, that she didn't have any explanation for being covered in his blood in the first place, and that she had not used him as a horse. The latter of thought made her shudder.
The doors flew open and Arista strode in at more of a ran. Dia turned her gaze to her and let out a deep breath. Relief that everything was certain to be alright now washed her of her previous embarrassment. She turned and watched Arista as she worked with Dan. "Darrow thought it best to inform Mr and Mrs Hubbles that their son had been injured." Dia spoke in a quiet voice, eyes downcast on Dan's knee that she was standing in front of. Dia looked to Girty and sighed as she took a step back so she could address everyone when she spoke.
Dia's mouth opened but nothing came out. She closed her eyes, swallowed and opened her eyes. "I am not one hundred percent certain what happened," she began hesitantly, "but if what I understood from Sir Cadogon is correct, one of the students-" here Dia glanced to Girty "-used a highly effective slashing cures, Sectumsempra. It was a good two minutes before Sir Cadogon found me. I levitated him here as soon and as quickly as I could. I tried to stop the blood but the gash was so large, I ... I ..." She faltered and tears filled her eyes. She didn't let them flow though, she kept them in her shining eyes and stared fixedly at Daniel's face.

Ariane hurried down the hall and into the Hospital Wing. SHe had been shocked through the whole arguement and stood still for several mintues after everyone had been cleared away. As soon as she had come back to her senses she had run at full speed up the stairs and throught the corridors.
Professer Hubbles was, by far, her favorite teacher and she felt that she should be there, seeing as she was with him when it had all happened. If anyone needed to ask questions she could give a third-person recount without any personal ties to sway the way she told it.... well except that the Professer was her favorite.
Ariane walked in quietly and closed the doors almost silently. She stood back a bit from the family and everyone else. Her eys were round and she bit her lip nervously He doens't look very good she thought pessimistically.

Rolling his head in his pillow Dan did not want to open his eyes, he did not want to have to see where he was again, he wanted to forget it and hope that it was all a dream. He would open his eyes and would be lying in his bed, his blanket half off the bed, the book he was reading slumped of the pillow the candles burnt out and the curtains half open showing the night sky. However as his senses came started to slowly fall into place he could hear voices, and the pain from his wound. He heard Girty’s voice at first and then his parents. Opening his eyes slowly the sight of his parents came into focus and straight away he noticed his mother was ranting away at someone, his heart gave a small thumb as he noticed that it was Dia.
Is he could of mustered his voice he would have told his mother to back off, but there was no chance. He knew as soon as he opened his mouth he would start to cough once again and lose more blood. So instead of talking he used all the energy he dared risk using and slowly moved his arm, reaching out of Dia’s hand. His figures sensed something, not knowing if it was Dia ‘s hand or dress. But he did not care, he just wanted to prove a point that he did not want Dia to leave his side. His figures tightened into a weak grip.
His somewhat lifeless eyes glared at her, had he been feeling normal he would have given her a cheeky wink accompanied with a wide grin. However this was now different, he was finding it hard to keep his eye lids up. They kept dropping and the sound of the room faded in and out. It was then when his grip loosened even more and Dan fell back into the darkness he was now getting use too.

Dia was taken aback by a student, Hufflepuff by her robes, came into the Hospital wing. Dia, glade for the reprieve, quickly walked to her. "I'm sorry, Ms Winchester," she said, making a shooing movement with her hands, "you can see the professor later. Tell Prof Darrow that Otis is here now." She smiled weakly at the girl and ushered her out of the door. She closed it with a light click and she returned to Dan's side.
This was not Dia's idea of a relaxing afternoon but what had to be done, had to be done. Sighing heavily, Dia looked to Mr and Mrs Hubbles. "I can't say enough how ..." she trailed off. Something warm was touching her hand. She looked down and saw it was a hand, Dan's hand. He gripped her had weakly but she was so happy she locked her fingers in his. She turned and leaned over him a bit. "Don't worry," she whispered, "Otis is here now. You're safe." He stared at her for a moment longer, stealing her breath away, but then fell asleep again, his hand lying limp in hers.
Dia sighed and wanted to straighten his hair but it would be inappropriate in front of his parents. So she put his hand on the bed next to him and straightened up. She drew a shaky breath and avoided looking at anyone. She stared, instead at a drop of blood on the floor before her foot.

Penelope looked on at the Professor listening closely to what she had to say for herself. Her patients were wearing thin, not only was her son in a seriously ill state the only other adult around the ward seemed to be scared of her. She was about to order the Professor to speak when the doors flew open and the healer came running in. All other thoughts fell out of all the Hubbles families minds, they watch closely as Otis worked on Dan. Dennis and Penelope swapped glances occasionally and Girty would look over at Dia before reverting her eyes back to her brother. After Otis had done everything she could they all turned their gaze onto Dia as she told them the story about how this disaster had happened.
Penelope and Dennis gasped in all the right places and showed pure horror at the idea that it was a student who had done this to their poor son. After the story had been told Penelope ran over to Girty and started to question her about what had happened. “Girty you were with Daniel when this happened….” “I was not with Dan Mum. I was in the common room” “Why were you not with him?” “I was hanging around with my friends, he was doing teachers stuff.” “But he is your brother” “And my professor. I do not hang round with him every waking minute. I love him, but not that much, you can see too much of your brother.” “That is not important.” “What! Are you blaming me for not protecting him?” “I just want to know who did this!”
Girty looked over up at Dia to see if she should say anything. If the Professor had not said anything Girty had no right to go around shouting out who did the terrible deed, no matter how much she wanted Loren to pay. However Penelope’s integration was cut sort by the sound of Dennis calling her over. “Blossom Dan is moving!”
Mrs Hubbles shot up and stood over by her husband on the opposite side of the bed. As Dan’s eyes opened a smile filled both of the parents faces. A sense of relief flooded over them. Penelope gave a small squeak as she tried to stop herself from crying, and Dennis wrapped his arm around his wife. They were proud of their son, the fact that he was able to break through such an ordeal. However he did not welcome exactly how they wanted. Dan seemed to ignore there presence and so straight for the blonde one. Penelope still hung onto the hope that eh would look over at them but his focus remained on her until he drifted back into the realms of sleep.
“Why did he do that? Did he not notice we where here. Maybe next time I should make it more clear I am here.” Penelope looked from her husband to Dia who was leaning over her son, the look in her eyes as she stared down at him explained it all. There son had won over another one, another name to the list, a Sunday lunch wasted as the relationship fails after only a few months. However it was clear that Dan wanted her near, and she would do anything to make her son happy.
“Girty. Stand up and let your teacher sit down. She has had a tough night and I think she needs the sit down more then you.”
Noticing that Girty was not willing to move she shot her an evil glare and a soft smile at Dia gesturing to the now empty chair. Over her shoulder Dennis breathed out rather loudly almost in a sigh of deafest. There was no arguing with his wife once she was set on something.

Dia had not looked up from the drop of blood on the floor for a while. She had been lost in thought, about why she was feeling the way she was, why Dan had asked her to stay, and why Mrs Hubbles seemed to dislike her so entirely. She could figure none of it out and it didn't matter then. What did was that Dan seemed to be alright, he was going to pull though and that was the bottom line.
She heard Mrs Hubbles' shrill voice echoed through the room and Dia looked at her, frowning. What is she talking about? she wondered, why did Dan do what? Dia was utterly bewildered and looked from Mrs to Mr Hubbles. She hadn't noticed anything out of the ordinary, under the circumstances. Dia looked back to Dan and a weak smile came to her face.
Once again, Mrs Hubbles voice rang through the room. "Oh, no, Mrs Hubbles," she protested, "I couldn't. Please, Girty, I got the chair for you. I'm quite happy standing." She smiled weakly at Girty. She addressed Girty in a low whisper and said, "I'd much rather be pacing but that's distracting, I know." Turning to Mr and Mrs Hubbles again, Dia said with renewed vigour, "can I get you two some... thing to sit on?" She needed to do something to keep her busy, she had to keep her mind off other things.

Dennis looked on at his wife studying her every move, or lack of it. Instead of her son being the centre of her attention it was know Professor Dia Owen. Penelope was fascinated about the action that Dia took, the soft smile at her son, the kindness she actually showed to her daughter and how her confidence was steadily increasing. Maybe she had been a bit to harsh at first, to condemning and forthcoming. Penelope turned back to Dennis and rested her head on his shoulder and just gazed at her son lying in the bed. With a soft smile and a small kiss on the top of his wife’s head Dennis once again wrapped his arms around hi wife and for a while they stood in silence till Dia offered the some form of seats.
“Thank you Professor that would be lovely. Everything that has happened today does take it out of you at my age.”
With a small smile over at Dia, Dennis rubbed his wife’s arm and looked over at Girty. He was surprised at how well she was taking it, maybe because they had turned up after she first found out. With a smile at this daughter he watched as Girty moved back to the chair she had just vacated. Everything in the ward seemed quite and rather daunting that they were all waiting for the movement of one person.
