The Character
Name: Oscar Abel Strauss
Age & Year: 16 and Sixth Year
Blood: Pureblood
Wand: 9 inches, trembling aspen and suited to acts of deflection.
History:
Oscar, the son of an affable Swiss goodwill ambassador, has had no formal training up to this point and, instead, has traveled alongside his father since the age of nine, his magic only becoming known in more recent years. By all rights, he is as far in his studies as most first years but has been transferred in, up to grade with those of his own age, as an overseas student under exception. This is, of course, due entirely to his father's many friends in both the secular and magical governments of Britain where he is well liked, though of no substantial importance. Claus, Oscar's genteel and aging father, would claim that this popularity is power enough and with good reason.
Though born of a pure wizarding line, Oscar arrives at the school with an intense, if not obvious fear of his own magic, unpredictable and powerfully moving. This should be of no surprise when one takes in to account that Oscar's family is composed entirely of disinherited squibs who have, for this reason, left behind the liquid world of spells and the contagious spirit. Matilde Strauss however, family matriarch and all around dotty socialite, insists she can trace the family back to Norway's own Saint Olaf, whose blood could heal the wounds of soldiers. In light of this, it becomes clear that the Strauss line's claim to a pure blood is tenuous at best.
These concerns aside, the lineage remains important to the family, well respected in Bern's wealthy, muggle society, and the source of a secret pride and distinction in each of them. Oscar, sixteen, graceless and confused about everything, remains the last hope of a nostalgic family whose legacy of magic has all but dried up completely.
Personality:
Oscar, despite his gross disadvantages in magic, does his best to appear unchallenged and unafraid. That is, he is prone to making sweeping declarations and getting in over his head. It becomes clear enough, however, that he is less interested in bravery than he is in seeking out dangerous situations for his own exploration. Perhaps because Oscar's magic came to him so late in life, he prefers to handle most tasks manually and without the supernatural assistance he so distrusts. More unconscious than conscious is Oscar's fear that his magic is not really his own, or even a part of him, though it moves him to seek out his own nature. Now with real proof of a world outside the one in which he has lived all his life, Oscar is more afraid than ever that he is on the verge of something lonely and impossible.
Appearance:
Nordic, pale and coming to many a sharp point. Oscar's hair turns white in the sun, an order of cotton. The kind of person and face affected by everything it comes in contact with. Often tired, translucent, a washed stone or the very taut string of an instrument in panic, a high note.
